What do you say in your emails to horrible sites to remove your links?
-
Morning guys,
I've the unenviable task of having to rectify poor link building (a previous company's work, not mine) which inevitably means emailing tons and tons of horrible directories with links to the client from as far back as 5/6 years ago.
I'm sure many of you are in the same boat so it begs the question:
What have you said to these types of sites that is effective in getting them to remove the links?
This could even be a two/three-parter:
If you've had little joy in requesting removals, have you dis-avowed the links, and what (if any) effect did it have?
Thanks,
M.

Thanks Carla and Marie,

I have found that a site is either going to comply to your request or they are not. There's probably nothing you can say to convince or bully them into changing their mind.
I generally say something like,
"Hi! My name is Marie Haynes and I am working with example.com who is currently dealing with an unnatural links penalty from Google. We are attempting to remove or nofollow all self made links that point to our site and are writing to you to ask if you could help. There are links on the following pages of yours that point to our site:
(example links)
Please know that your site's integrity is not in question here. If you feel that this link was made by you without us or an SEO asking for it, then please let me know and we will keep it. Otherwise, if you are able to remove or nofollow that would help us greatly."

Hi Martin,
Great question. I run into this situation all the time just like trying to tell a potential customer that their Flash website has to be redone.
I usually call them and try to educate them on what Google is now requiring. That poor link building practices work in the past but not today and that their a in danger of getting dinged by the Google Spam team. I also try and fine one good article that explains all this from a very reliable source so that they don't think you are making it up.
Education is the only way. I find educating my clients the best way to sell white hat linkbuilding services. Yes it is time consuming but effective and it builds trust.
I would not bash the other SEO company. I would just explain that Google has improved their algorithm and that these techniques are considered black hat or poor link building techniques and that they should correct them or else....
Hope that answers your question. The same issue pops up with websites that have poor web architectures. When you suggest to the client, that they need to modify their website, they freak out.
Good luck and I hope this answers your question
Carla

Back links issue and how to resolve it
Hi there! We have a client who has been generating back links from external sites over a period of two years with all the same anchor text which all link back to the home page. This anchor text is also their main search phrase they wish to score highly on. In total, they have roughly 300 domain names linking to their site. Over 50 of these domain names all have the same anchor text. These links have been generated through articles and blogs. So roughly 20% of the total number of links all have the same anchor text. Over the past 6 months the client has noticed a steady drop in their rankings for this term. From the back link analysis we have done, we believe it is this which is causing the problem. Does any one else agree? For the remedy, do we go in and see if we can change the anchor text or disavow them through Google webmaster tools? Suggestions? Thanks for your help! P 🙂

NoFollow tag for external links: Good or bad?
I have a few sites that have tens of thousands of links on them (most of them are sourcing images that happen to be external links). I know that it's a good thing to externally link to reputable sources, but is it smart to place the nofollow tag on ALL external links? I'm sure there is a good chance that external links from posts from years ago are pointing to sites that may now be penalized. I feel as though nofollowing all the external links could come off as unnatural. What are the pros and cons of placing the nofollow tag on ALL external links, and also if I leave it as is and don't put the nofollow tag on them. Thanks.

Link Espionage?
Can anyone tell why pages like this are linking to our site? http://iga.edu/facebooktabs/images/inscribirse/formulario/en/noclosingcost.html This .edu page looks benign, however if you read it, it wont take long to see what appears to be machine generated content related to finance. It has ONLY ONE outgoing link and it to my site. To me it seems to be an attempt to make us look like a link buyer. We aren't! There are dozens of these type of pages linking to us. Here's the text around the link to our site, ERATE.com Apr the origination fee alone will cost you at closing however what your broker isn t should you pay a loan origination fee or get a no fee mortgage when refinancing refinancing mortgage rates scandal could cost you a year arkansas california colorado connecticut delaware. Removing Unnatural Link Penalties
As soon as I began working in my current position at my current company I noticed my predecessor's tendency towards buying link packages from blackhat companies... I knew we were being penalized, and had to prove to him that we needed to halt those campaigns immediately and try our darndest to remove all poison links from the internet. I did convince him and began the process. There was 57% of our backlinks tied to the same anchor phrase with 836 domains linking to the same phrase, same page. Today there are 643 of those links remaining. So I have hit a large number of them, but not nearly enough. So now I am getting messages from Google announcing that our site has been hit with an unnatural link penalty. I haven't really seen the results of this yet in the keywords I am trying to rank for, but fear it will hurt very soon and know that I could be doing better in the meantime. I really don't know what to do next. I've tried the whole "contact the webmasters" technique and maybe have had 1/100 agree to remove our links. They all want money or don't respond.. Do I really need to use this Disavow tool?

Seo back linking proposal review
Hi guys, below is a proposal i received from someone on freelancer.com for some seo building. Is this really all it takes? Obviously done overtime but basically is this it aside from the usual basics onsite keywords, urls, artciles, content etc. This is a the proposal for $250 (some are cheaper but almost the same details as below). This is one of the top seo people on freelancers.com and they all have good reviews. Is this basically it? Shell out $100 bucks or more a month to someone who will just post stuff all over the internet. It just seems all very simple, what is $100 bucks a month to stay at #1. Are there tools out there to determine when a link linked to your site? I want to know when a link farm was done a site.
In Webmaster Tools I discovered that a client of mine with signed up for or hired another company to get links. The links are poor quality and from other countries, so it looks like a link farm was done. I want to know when they links were linked to the site, and not sure how to find that information out. Does anyone know how to find this out?
