Parallax, SEO, and Duplicate Content
-
We are working on a project that uses parallax to provide a great experience to the end user, and we are also trying to create a best case scenario for SEO. We have multiple keywords we are trying to optimize.
We have multiple pages with the parallax function built into it. Basically each member of the primary navigation is it's own page, with all subpages built below it using the parallax function.
Our navigation currently uses the hashbang method to provide custom URL's for each subpage. And the user is appropriately directed to the right section based on that hashbang.
www.example.com/About < This is its own page
www.example.com/about/#/history < This is a subpage that you scroll to on the About page
We are trying to decide what the best method will be for trying to optimize each subpage, but my current concern is that because each subpage is really a part of the primary page, will all those URL's be seen as duplicate content?
Currently the site can also serve each subpage as it's own page as well, so without the parallax function. Should I include those as part of the sitemap. There's no way to navigate to them unless I include them in the sitemap, but I don't want Google to think I'm disingenuous in providing them links that don't exist, solely for the purpose of SEO, but truthfully all of the content exists and is available to the user.
I know that a lot of people are asking these questions, and there really are no right answers yet, but I'm curious about everyone else's experience so far.

Hi Paul,
I totally agree with you. Development is outgrowing crawlers but then again this has always been true. Designing and programing for crawlers is something SEOers do but not programers. The thing is that clients want traffic and conversiones and cool technology. However if you only do cool technology without accomplishing business objectives, the project will not be consider successful in the clients eyes...just my 2 cents..
Regarding doing SEO and Parallax Scrolling, I think these two sites accomplished it nicely. I have not found any others. Both are responsive which is also a must.
Kickpoint.ca accomplished telling a story through its graphics and the site is light and versatile. However its onsite SEO could be improved with a little effort.
Posicionamiento Web accomplished great onsite SEO but poor "story telling parallax scrolling" effects. The site is heavy and not as versatile as kickpoint's.
One option is to do parallax scrolling on the home and regular internal pages. This makes the site light.
Good Luck.

Well thats no good. I guess we have to be really careful. Unfortunately this is one area where I think development has outgrown the ability for crawlers to determine what is happening. We aren't trying to do anything malicious. We just want to create a good engaging site. I'll keep trying and continue to post if I have more luck with our method.

Hi Paul,
I decided to run flowerbeauty.com through MOZ's software and here are the results. It does pick up stuff as duplicate content. See http://imgur.com/YEb6bmZ
Flowerbeauty is not SEO friendly.

Hi Paul,
I think before you design your website, you might try creating a campaign for flowerbeauty.com to see if Moz says there are any onsite errors. If it passes Moz's scrutiny, then there is a good chance Google will see it the same way. I have a slot for a new campaign in case you don't have one. I would really like to get to the bottom of this as you can see.
Let me know if you want me run it through Moz to see if it passes onsite optimization. I forgot to mention that my site did pass Moz's onsite analysis. I never tried running the other 2 SEO Parallax Scrolling websites through Moz's software.

Thanks Carla for the reference. So if I'm understanding the way this example site works. Your pulling in the content on each "subpage" dynamically so that Google will never see the content twice when visiting the page?
I like the way this works, although I wish you didn't have to see a loading graphic when the page pulls in the content.
I agree that this method looks good, and I would love to get rid of the hashbangs but thats just part of what makes everything work in our current use case.
Certainly I think this site is a move in the right direction.
Thanks for the links and pointers

Hi Paul,
First of all congrats on the great new technique. I recently wrote an article about SEO Parallax Scrolling and Responsive websites. There is a website using the hashtag method that is semi SEO friendly here http://flowerbeauty.com/.However that being said
To answer your concer "but my current concern is that because each subpage is really a part of the primary page, will all those URL's be seen as duplicate content". I believe Google will see this as a multiple page site as long as you have different content on different URL's. Why don't you try adding parallax scrolling to each SEO url and have the scroll function take you to each URL like www.flowerbeauty.com did. Make sure to optimize your URL's as well.
For example
as you scroll it would take you too
www.example.com/About/optimized-URL.
I would get rid of the hashtags.
Here are some other SEO friendly parallax scrolling websites. http://www.pinterest.com/ecumbre/seo-and-parallax-scrolling/
Let me know if that helps.
Thanks Carla

What website changes (technical) SEOs can ignore confidently? Google's perspective!
Hi community members, I am looking after SEO at our company and there are lots of changes happening about our website; especially technical changes. It's hard for me to look after every deployment of the website like change of server location, etc. We generally agree that every change related to website must be notified by SEO to understand the ranking fluctuation and how search engines welcome them. I just wonder what technical deployments of a website I could confidently ignore to save time and give a go ahead to technical team without interrupting or waiting for my approval. Thanks

Need suggestion: What is the best internal linking structure for our website to gain in SEO & UX too?
Hi all, We have 3 different editions of our product we are selling with 20 features. 1st edition & 2nd edition comes with 15 features in which 10 are common in each edition. 3rd edition comes with all 20 features. Now what's the best way to interlink and show the navigational menu to highlight 3 editions and features as well? Much appreciated if some one refer me a website with such structure. Thanks

H1 for users or SEO in this case
Hello, A client of mine has an online store with a pre-made cart. In this cart the name below the product in the category pages and the H1 tag on the product pages themselves are the same textbox entry (they have to be the same thing) We want to add two product features to the product name, but this will make the H1 longer and diluted. Let me give you a fictional example, A category page for cross-trainer shoes would have products in it. Below each product it says things like "Nike Sports One Shoes" and "Adidas Action Series Shoes". We want to make it "Nike Sports Shoes size 7 through 12 for running and walking" and "Adidas Action Series Shoes size 5 through 10 for running, walking, and hiking". The reason for the change is that we want users to know about size and one more important feature before they visit the product page in our case to save them time. But this changes the H1 on the product page (a pre-made cart problem) from "Adidas Action Series Shoes" which is the direct search term to "Adidas Action Series Shoes size 5 through 10 for running, walking, and hiking" which is not a direct search term. This dilutes the keyword in the H1 but will save users time. We will put a tag inside the H1 just so you know, so that we can bold the name of the product to still be seen clearly, I hope that's not an HTML SEO problem. **What do you think, for users with diluted SEO or better SEO in this case? Our product pages are our most important pages in this industry. Thanks**

Site as one page - SEO implications
We may be inheriting a site and will be asked to do SEO for it. We will have control over the development of the site, so this structure is what it is. My question is - how significant of an impact do you think this is going to have and can you think of any workarounds that may help? Basically, the user experience of the site will feel similar to multiple pages. However, this site will, in essence be one page and pull various content through javascript from different locations. I have not seen the site yet (and believe it is still in development), but this is how it has been explained to me. Any thoughts? My first thought was to add a blog to add page depth to the site and expand the content. Any other thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Thanks. (I know this is limited information, I'm sorry. It's just about all I have to work with right now, and I was a little concerned and was hoping for a second opinion)

Confluence and SEO
I think this is a difficult question so apologies in advance and any help would be appreciated! We currently have a large amount of support center content sitting on our main pages which we don’t think is very effective (mainly basic how to guides). We think it is difficult for visitors to understand and the UI is very poor. In order to solve this we’re currently moving this content onto a subdomain using Confluence, a wiki based team collaboration tool (from a company called Atlassian). What we’re planning on doing is very much like what Atlassian themselves have done on this page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/ALLDOC/Atlassian+Documentation What are the SEO issues / dangers that I need to consider before moving this content? I’m assuming that as this content will still be on the same domain then we can minimise link equity / authority loss by setting up re-directs to the new content. Also, has anyone had any experience of using Confluence and whether individual pages can be optimised for SEO? I notice that there are lots of add-ins that can be used, one of which is an SEO add-on which allows you to customise things like meta description tags.

Do pull quotes affect SEO positively or negatively?
I like the design element of a pull quote to ad interest and highlight an important point. If I use an exact quote from the page in a pull quote on that page, does that negatively affect SEO as duplicate content? Are there formatting or tagging methods that could help pull quotes to boost SEO? For clarity, by "pull quote" I mean a stylized bit of text that floats on a page in such a way that the body text wraps around it. It is actual text (not text embedded in a graphic) but it behaves like an image with text wrapping around it. Here's an example (in red on the right side): http://www.21ct.com/resources/news-room/21ct-announces-its-latest-us-patent-for-advancing-big-data-security/

Hi Everybody. I have a large site that is made up of the main site then a large support site. The support site has a lot of overlapping content and similar titles. Would it be beneficial to separate the two? Thank you. All answers appreciated.

Duplicat Content?start=1
I am currently trying to figure out how to fix this basically our subcategory pages are being flagged for duplicate content. Basically we have items listed on these pages and usually we show 12 items and users can click to go onto the next page of items. Here is an example of what I am seeing. I'm just not too sure on how I would go about fixing this... Thanks for any Help! http://www.example.com/Beer-Coolers-sz3193.htm?start=1 http://www.example.com/Beer-Coolers-sz3193.htm
