International SEO (USA & UK)

Hi
I have a client project site thats been operating successfully in the UK now for a few months and looking to expand offer to USA.
Their dev team thinks best to have a UK & US subfolder with IP sniffer serving up the relevant version depending upon ip location
Apart from price differences and some spelling differences content will likely be duplicate.
Please can anyone offer advice in regard to the above such as links to latest international seo resources/articles etc (i have seen Aleydas great WBF).
If anyone has any experience of above scenarios (i.e. knows of probs with ip sniffer method in regard to seo or essentially having dupe folders for uk & usa just with local differences) then any advice comments will be much appreciated ?

So do you need an individual site map for each country subfolder as well as hreflang, or either or (since you say or) ?
Should subfolders be of the format /en-us/ & /en-gb/ etc ?
Any resources you recommend for finding the right way to deal with IP sniffing or not ? or preferred alternate solutions ?

If you are correctly using rel="alternate" hreflang= meta tags or sitemaps, then it shouldn't matter if you have mostly similar content. One of Google's examples is just like your question:
Your pages have broadly similar content within a single language, but the content has small regional variations. For example, you might have English-language content targeted at readers in the US, GB, and Ireland. Now, your question on IP sniffing is a slightly different kettle of fish. Google contradict themselves in their own guidlines!
On this page, Multi-regional and multilingual sites, they say:
Avoid automatic redirection based on the user’s perceived language. These redirections could prevent users (and search engines) from viewing all the versions of your site. Yet here, Introducing "x-default hreflang" for international landing pages, they say:
The homepages of multinational and multilingual websites are sometimes configured to point visitors to localized pages, either via redirects or by changing the content to reflect the user’s language. And then there is this recent video from Matt Cutts: Is redirecting users based on their location spam?

A Bazaar 10 Days In WMT & Moz
Hey All, Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this or has any idea what happen to one of my sites last week. I have a lot of question and unanswered weirdness that seems to be occurring in the data. It kind of plays out like this. Noticeable drop off in organic SE traffic WMT kicks out 70% of my structured schema data Moz drops DA to 14 from 17 Moz MR drops from 3.50 to 2.74 Total Indexed pages (as per SEOQuake tool bar) Drops from 500 to 224 All the images submitted via a sitemap have been unindexed according to WMT. This only a 3 month old web site with a minimal back linking profile, we're talking less than 100. No one has been working on the site, the only thing that has happen in the last month is blog post being posted. All unique content and well formatted. Then at the beginning of this week I saw traffic increasing again, and this was confirmed when WMT updated and I got my Moz update. All schema data back in WMT, with no acknowledgement of the drop; the graph just continues in a steady rise as tho nothing happened. Traffic back up to normal levels, as tho nothing happened. I have noticed a 100% increase in the amount of pages being blocked by robots.txt, I haven't changed it, nor has anyone else, it has been the same since the site was launched. I'm hoping that Moz will put the DA and MR back to where they were, and no damage will be done.\ But my question is, What the hell happened? It nearly wiped the site of the face off the earth for 10 days, how do I find out what did it, why and stop it from happening again? I have noticed the number of pages indexed by google, as quoted by SEOquake tool bar not WMT regularly jumps from anywhere from 200 to 500, Any ideas? I know their are many different elements at play here, where do I start, I can't sit back and hop it never happens again. SEO for EMD
Hi, I bought ForSaleInAZ.com for my real estate website. Google Keyword Tool estimate 301k local searches for that term. I would like to capitalize on this by building this site with good content. My question to you, besides the search being the URL, what is the best practice to specifically promote the "For Sale In AZ" phrase? Should it be in the Page Title, Meta Description, Content H1 & H2 tags, Image tag? Or, is it being in the URL good enough...so all I have to do is build good content? I understand not to over do it but I could use your advice. Can you please give me some suggestions/ guidelines to follow specifically to my EMD? SEO Expertise Level: I am comfortable and have the decent understanding but, by no means, an expert! Thanks, Carl

Wordpress & trailing slash on domain name
Hi recently changed my site so it is based on Wordpress, got my preferred domain set in Google webmaster as www.domian.co.uk but since moving to wordpress my domain is now having a slash put on the end of it like www.domain.co.uk/ Most of the links going to my homepage do not have the slash on the end so am I right in thinking I should get rid of the slash from my site so I have one consistent url? If so any ideas how to banish the slash? Cannot seem to do it through the Wordpress general settings (despite preferred domain being set as www.domain.co.uk !) Thanks T

Internal Linking - in content vs navigation menu
Would like to get some thoughts on whether navigation menus or in-content links are best for internal linking, from an SEO standpoint. A few thoughts to get started with: For sites with a lot of content, you can have a navigation menu linking to your higher-level pages, then in-content links to deeper pages on your site. For smaller sites, this is not an option, as the navigation menu will probably link to all your important pages. You could add in-content links, but Google only counts the first link on the page, so the in-content links would be ignored if you'd already linked yp the page in your top nav menu. I can think of several possible reasons navigation menu links could be less desirable than in content links from a Google perspective. (They are sitewide boilerplate content without context.) If you setup your navigation structure based on what is best for the user, small sites don't have much wiggle room to optimize internal link structure, as all their money pages will be linked to from the top nav menu. Do you think Google prefers in content links to navigation menu links? If so, how do you get around the fact that for many sites, all their money pages are being linked to from their main navigation menu?

Optimization for allready indexed web without seo before
Hi, I have some questions. I have 2 Joomla web sites who needs seo optimization, but there are allready indexed in Google: 1/ Will rel=canonical fix the problem for duplicated content for allready indexed pages? I have read different solutions but I haven't tested them all. I puted rel=canonical on the first web site that I started to optimize, but Google WMT shows me very small or not at all decreasing of duplicated content. Would it need more time? 2/How can I show search engines to craw and change the cache for a page that is allready indexed faster than 1-2 months? 3/ What is your opinion and experience? With done changes for one website for a low competition keyword /the web site was not optimized for search engines before/ how much time will it take usually for Google to see the changes made and change the ranking for some keyword?

Generic domain for SEO versus Brand name
I am currently building a retail e-commerce site in a highly competitive area. We have a generic brand name; e.g. kitchen-knives.com and we also have another brand name, e.g. 'slycers.com' We have 3 options that I can see and I would like to know which is better for SEO. Build generic.com as a blog site. Link to brand.com 301 redirect from generic.com to brand.com. Use generic.com as anchor text in all links 301 redirect from brand.com to generic.com . Use generic.com as anchor text in all links Also, if there are other better options, then I would appreciate the input! thanks
