Google Enterprise Search Questions
-
Hi Everybody,
A client has asked me to take a look at Google Enterprise Search for them. It has been a few years since I last fooled around with implementing a Google search box on a website, and that was the free version which included off-site results in the results.
This appears to be the main page describing the paid product:
http://www.google.com/enterprise/search/
I have three questions:
-
The search testing function on the above page doesn't seem to be working. I'm typing in a URL and search term, as prompted, and the page is simply refreshing. It never provides me an example set of results. Is it working for you?
-
This client has a moderately large e-commerce site (about 200 products). Have you implemented Google enterprise search on such a site and are you happy with its performance? The goal here is to let users search for a topic and be returned both product and informational pages. How well does this tool do this?
-
Am I going to need to know any special types of coding (beyond html/css) to implement this? If so, what are they?
If you have experience with this product, I would surely appreciate your feedback. Thank you!

Paul,
Your answer was incredibly helpful - so much so that I'm going to endorse it. You not only pointed me in the right direction, you really helped me to feel confident that this will be a good solution for my client. Sincerely appreciate it!

Don't think that link you posted is the one you meant, Miriam. That product is the actual Google server appliance that you would install in-house to drive extremely sophisticated search functions for your company's internal documents (and can also be configured to index your web site.) and would be overkill for your purpose.
Weren't you actually looking at Google Site Search? It's the one that starts at $100/yr to remove Google ads & branding from their default internal website search, and allows you to apply your own styling, to bias the search for recency, and even to insert your own promotional results into autocomplete on your site's search engine. It starts at $100/yr for 20,000 search queries.
And yea, that page's example search functionality is borked for me too - not sure what's going on there. The product itself works really well though. It does only need html/css to add your own look & feel. The addition of labels, customizations, promo results etc is all done through check boxes and text fields on the admin dashboard.
The one challenge can be that you're depending on Google to do the indexing. You can trigger a request for indexing yourself, but if the site gets a lot of new content added really frequently, there can be a delay (up to 24 hrs) before that content is available to internal search. Note that this process in no way affects, for better or worse, your Google SERPS indexing. The two processes are completely separate.
For your specific situation of returning both product and info pages, you'd need to work with the label functionality of Site Search. The built-in synonym capability is also a huge improvement over most default site search.
Overall, I've found this a great solution for websites that are either built on a framework that doesn't have a quality site search built in or plugin, or for sites that are a combination of several technologies whose built-in search isn't capable of indexing each others' technologies. (An indexer that can directly access your own site's database is usually faster & more configurable, but takes more coding, and puts additional load on the site's own server.)
That the kind of info you're looking for?
Paul

Google Search Console - Sitemap
Hi all, Quick question. I'm trying to update my sitemap via Google Search Console using a sitemap.xml file that I've created with ScreamingFrog. However, when trying to submit it, it seems that Google only allows sitemaps that are located at a path within your domain (i.e. www.example.com/sitemap.xml) as opposed to being able to directly upload a sitemap.xml file.Is there any way that I can easily upload my sitemap.xml file? Or is there any easy way that I can upload the file to a path on my domain so I can upload via the URL?Any insight would be much appreciated!Best,Sung

Google index graph duration in Google Webmaster Tools
Hello guys, I wonder, my sites are currently being indexed every 7 days, exactly. At Index Status page in GWT. However, this new site gets updated almost everyday, how can I ask google to index faster and more frequently/almost daily? Is it about SItemap.xml frequency ? I changed it today to Daily. Thanks!

Google Publisher status
Hi all, I just wondered what the general opinion was with regard getting Google publisher status for medium to large organisations. Lots of our clients write a lot of articles & publications and it would be interesting to get some thoughts on how others view Authorship & in particular Publisher credentials. Thanks!

Changes to title and description not appearing in Google search...
www.heatwavemedia.com Search terms: san francisco video production, san francisco video production services In Google search site appears as "Heartwave Media: San Francisco Video Production Services" but I'm sure I've never used a colon in all my iterations of the title... Instead it reads "San Francisco Video Production Services | Heartwave Media" with the description "A San Francisco video production company specializing in creative corporate and commercial video services." But that's not coming up either... I'm on Wordpress and am using All in One SEO if that helps... Thoughts?

Does Google index has expiration?
Hi, I have this in mind and I think you can help me. Suppose that I have a pagin something like this: www.mysite.com/politics where I have a list of the current month news. Great, everytime the bot check this url, index the links that are there. What happens next month, all that link are not visible anymore by the user unless he search in a search box or google. Does google keep those links? The current month google check that those links are there, but next month are not, but they are alive. So, my question is, Does google keep this links for ever if they are alive but nowhere in the site (the bot not find them anymore but they work)? Thanks

Drupal Question
So on our site we have a plugin for our fan gallery. The issue is that I am getting a lot of duplication errors and it's saying the URL is too long and all the errors are coming from the Fan Gallery, which has over 8,000 errors. It seems to be pulling a long form query URL that has over 100 characters. You can't physically see it on the site, but the crawlers can. Anyway I'm trying to figure out a fix for this. One method would be to just stop those pages from being crawled, but I would hate to do that as the fan gallery for us would be a great source of links and content. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had an issue with these types of plugins before where the user can upload a photo or do a video embed and then it submits to the site. If you have a better method please let me know. I usually work on E-comm platforms so my experience with drupal is limited.

Google crawl rate almost zero since re-launch, organic search up 50% though!
We're confused as to why Google's crawl of our site has dropped hugely since our new site went live. The URLs of almost all pages changed, and were 301d to the new site. About 20% of our pages were blocked by robots.txt for the re-launch. The re-launch has been great for organic search, with hits up about 50%. Yet our new content is taking a lot longer to get indexed than before. Our KB downloaded a day according to webmaster tools are well down, as is time spent downloading a page. Any ideas as to why this is?i7hwX.png

Weird Indexing Question
Google has indexed mysite.com/ and mysitem.com/\/ (no idea why). If you click on the /%5C? URL it takes you to mysite.com//. I have a rel=canonical tag on it that goes to mysite.com/ but I was wondering if there was another way to correct the issue.
