How important is the optional <priority>tag in an XML sitemap of your website? Can this help search engines understand the hierarchy of a website?</priority>
-
Can the <priority>tag be used to tell search engines the hierarchy of a site or should it be used to let search engines know which priority to we want pages to be indexed in?</priority>
-
Hi,
If you would deem all internal pages to be of equal importance, then yes, there is no harm in this. The homepage is always set at 1.0 though.
That said, everyone always has a view of their internal pages and which they class as pass-though to get to something more important, so do keep this in mind when deciding.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the response. We are a local listings site and have a number of category/sub-category/business-detail pages (possibly at a city as well as a location level) in the structure of our site. This being the case, what would you suggest the priority to be allocated to the different pages should be? If just an indication to the bots to specify all the important pages on the site to crawl, then should we just maintain the same priority (say 0.8) for all the hierarchies (possibly with the home page as 1.0)?
-
It's a suggestion, and just indicates to Googlebot how often they should come along. It won't do anything in terms of telling them more about the site hierarchy really, but will give them an idea about which pages are most important.
That said, you should try and follow the following structure:
Homepage: 100%
Internal Pages: 60%
Blog Pages: 30%Or something very similar.
I hope this helps.

URL Parameters Settings in WMT/Search Console
On an large ecommerce site the main navigation links to URLs that include a legacy parameter. The parameter doesn’t actually seem to do anything to change content - it doesn’t narrow or specify content, nor does it currently track sessions. We’ve set the canonical for these URLs to be without the parameter. (We did this when we started seeing that Google was stripping out the parameter in the majority of SERP results themselves.) We’re trying to best strategize on how to set the parameters in WMT (search console). Our options are to set to: 1. No: Doesn’t affect page content’ - and then the Crawl field in WMT is auto-set to ‘Representative URL’. (Note, that it's unclear what ‘Representative URL’ is defined as. Google’s documentation suggests that a representative URL is a canonical URL, and we've specifically set canonicals to be without the parameter so does this contradict? ) OR 2. ‘Yes: Changes, reorders, or narrows page content’ And then it’s a question of how to instruct Googlebot to crawl these pages: 'Let Googlebot decide' OR 'No URLs'. The fundamental issue is whether the parameter settings are an index signal or crawl signal. Google documents them as crawl signals, but if we instruct Google not to crawl our navigation how will it find and pass equity to the canonical URLs? Thoughts? Google Webmaster Tools -> Sitemap suddent "indexed" drop
Hello MOZ, We had an massive SEO drop in June due to unknown reasons and we have been trying to recover since then. I've just noticed this yesterday and I'm worried. See: http://imgur.com/xv2QgCQ Could anyone help by explaining what would cause this sudden drop and what does this drop translates to exactly? What is strange is that our index status is still strong at 310 pages, no drop there: http://imgur.com/a1sRAKo And when I do search on google site:globecar.com everything seems normal see: http://imgur.com/O7vPkqu Thanks,

Can some one help me find this Matt Cutts article on disavows?
Hey everyone. A while ago, I remember reading that Matt Cutts said that you can just disavow domains, and that the Google Webmaster Tools team doesn't read for comments (like if webmasters had been reached out to). Is this ringing any bells? I'm trying to find this tidbit again. Thanks!

Googleon/off tag does it work
Hi I am currently working on a page where I have some of the content across all pages. Rewriting it to make it unique is not an option I am afraid. I came across a tag called Googleon/off that will tell google not to index a certain part of a give webpage but will this ensure that it is not seen as dupplicate content? https://developers.google.com/search-appliance/documentation/610/admin_crawl/Preparing

If I only Link to Page via Sitemap, can it still get indexed?
Hi there! I am creating a ton of content for specific geographies. Is it possible for these pages to get indexed if I only put them in my sitemap and don't link to them through my actual site (though the pages will be live). Thanks!

How can I resolve weird duplicates showing up because of my mobile website?
We launched a mobile site a month ago following the parallel mobile structure with a URL: m.example.com The week later my moz crawl detected thousands of dups which I am trying to resolve right now by implementing canonical tags on the mobile version and rel=alternate onto the desktop version. So what is weird is that I found urls that were detected as duplicates on top of the regular duplicate: www.example.com/name?device=desktop m.example.com/name?device=mobile These 2 urls double the number of duplicates. Can you tell me what are these? is this normal? and how can I fix those? Thank you mozzers!
