Link building with PDFs

I created a manual for a popular piece of equipment and placed it, as a PDF-file, on my website.
The PDF contains a clickable link to the root domain of my website. Other websites have downloaded the PDF and put it on their own website, hosting it themselves.
Since Google indexes PDFs, does the link in the PDF count as a regular 'link' from an external website, and does it have comparable value? Can't find any thoughts or studies about this anywhere.

Why not convert the PDF to HTML yet still have a download PDF button for clients if desired? Heck there are lots of free tools to do this, but check the code. Or you could just use an ALT tag which aren't just for images but for objects. Not sure if PDF's with ALT tag give much link juice, and if I HAD to keep it as a PDF, I'd convert it to a compressed JPG file and use an ALT tag so that Google knows what the object is and keyterms.

Yes PDF do pass link juice, they are not the most optimum links however there is a nice pro's and cons on it over at search engine land

Link Building for Charities?

Should I build internal links to my homepage?
Ive done a lot of internal linking before but its always been for other inner pages but now I need to do it for a websites homepage but this got me thinking if its even worth doing and should I be doing it at all? For the first question I was thinking that surely the homepage has more authority than any of my inner pages so how would internal links from inner pages help and for the second question Ive read a few posts like this Kissmetrics one here where it says you shouldnt do it. There are two types of links you should avoid using in your content: Homepage. Most sites have too many links to the homepage as it is. Are you using ArticleBase.com for link building?
I'm digging my way through my competitors' link profiles on OSE and came across one that had been using a site called ArticleBase.com Apparently you can publish articles for free and browse other published articles for usage on your own site (provided you follow their TOS). It actually seems like a nifty idea. I'm wondering if anyone has utilized this site for re-publishing content and building external links. Worth the effort? Thanks!

Is it important to have a geo modifier for local SEO link building?
If anyone here is familiar with local SEO, you may have noticed that there are different local results for: "city + Keyword" and just the "keyword". When building links will you end up targeting both with a geo modifier in the link, or is it beneficial to build links without the geo modifer for the keyword?
