.co.uk ranking in serps and .com ranking on local
-
Hi im not sure what the best course of action is my client has one site but it has 2 TLD the .co.uk and the .com they wanted all .co.uk redirected to the .com but the .co.uk is ranking in the serps postion 2 and the .com is ranking in local, but is way back in the serps. So i have a bit of a dilemma, by the way it is a local business based in the uk.
what should i do?
-
A bit late but just for the record.
You have a rewrite rule in place not a redirect. You need something like:
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]
-
i've added
`RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.yoursite.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yoursite.co.uk/$1 [R=permanent,QSA,L]` to my .htaccess file in the root of my domain and it seems to be working
I've gone to google webmaster tools
1 Pick your new site from the list- done
but am stuck on step 2, i'm getting the following error:
2 Confirm that 301-redirects work properly
URLs from your old site should be redirected to your new site using permanent 301-redirect directives.
We couldn't find any 301-redirect directives for your site. For more details check the Fetch as Google tool. -
that sounds great thanks.
Sorry I forgot to mention the client has all their printed material letterheads, business cards etc and links pointing to the .com, but google has decided to serp the .co.uk if i change everyting to the .com should that then serp the .com to the top?
Or should i just stick to the .co.uk as I guess that doesnt matter to much as the 301 will just redirect.
Does google favour .co.uk listings in local uk results?

Hey
The answer here is pretty simple - you need to prioritise a single domain. The one you choose does not really matter in the long run so I would tend to favour the one people know best. I like .co.uk for uk businesses personally but...
1. Make sure both sites are registered in webmaster tools & put through a change of address for the one you want to change. Make sure the other is registered and you set any URL preferences (www. etc)
2. Add a 301 redirection to prioritise the main domain - you can use one rewrite rule to handle all www, non www, co.uk & .com variations - instructions here: http://www.bowlerhat.co.uk/one-301-rewrite-to-rule-them-all/
3. Add canonical URLs for the correct TLD to pick up any slack
4. Claim your local listing and update the URL to the correct one
5. Ideally update any external links if easy to do so for consistency
Ultimately, don't over think this one. If you have both domains indexed then you will only see improvements from getting this all consistent on the one TLD.
Hope that helps
Marcus

Wrong page ranking on SERP, above more relevant page
Often I will see the wrong page, something less relevant to a particular search, appear higher on the SERP than a more relevant page. Why does this happen and how can it be remedied? I found this Moz article, has anything been written on this topic more recently. Thanks! https://moz.com/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions

General drop in rankings
We've made a LOT of improvements to our on page SEO and we've been on the right track, but since about 26/7 our rankings appears to have gone down. Since early 2015 we've reworked a lot of the copy on our site to improve the unique/duplicate ratio, we've redone a lot of urls that didn't make any sense. We've improved image alt-text and file names. We've reduced image size on most of the site and we have disavowed spam links (obvious ones like nike shoes and oakley glasses). We've basically improved on-site SEO as much as we can with headers and whatnot. We've been hacked 4 times since January and we had two partial manual penalties from Google, but they were quickly dealt with and we've switched server to one that is both safer and a lot faster. Most of the hacked content seems to have disappeared from Googles index but not all of it. We have also tried our best to deal with URL parameters and we've made 301's out of hundreds of URLs with duplicate content from old slideshows that basically only had an image. And there's even more things we've done like working a lot more with social media, but despite all that were loosing ranking every week and our SEOlytics SVR is at its lowest since early 2014. And we've never (afaik) bought links or anything like that. Obviously we're doing something wrong but frankly we're running out of ideas. We've lost rankings on individual important phrases but there's site-wide general drop.

Strange ranking occurrences in Google (NL)
Mozzers, I got a question for all of you. Recently (about 3 months ago) I launched a renewed website for a costumer of mine. Since then rankings have been improving and some decreasing a little but overall it went quite allright. _Still, we now have some issues with some new pages and I really don't know what to do any more. _ The Case:

For starters lets say the company sells vacuum cleaners. We now make pages for specific product ranges e.g. Miele Diamond vacuum cleaners which in turn tells something about this product range and has links to different pages of that series, for instance the Miele Black Diamond Silent Vacuum Cleaner. Why did we do this? We already ranked for specific product pages but also wanted to rank for more general terms and thus product ranges. What happened? We now rank perfectly well for the product pages itself but for some reason the Miele Diamond Vacuum Cleaners page doesn't rank at all or not as it should. Why is this strange? Because we applied the exact same tactic for some other product ranges on the same website and it worked like a charm (part of the reason why we started to do this for all product-ranges). I could really use some help here. If you want I can message you the pagelink in PM but I won't post it here for several reasons. The Vacuum Cleaners in this example or not the real products though but used as an exemplar. I really do hope to hear from you with some advice or request for more information. Regards

New Pages - Stable Rankings
Hello, Not a direct question really, just a poll really of your experience - I work with a few companies and have noticed recently that there seems to be an increase in the time it takes to go from a) showing up in the index (quickly within a day or two) to b) getting a stable ranking. I see spikes over the first few weeks (even up to 3 months) before the rankings eventually settle. Have you noticed the same, is it taking longer to achieve a stable ranking, do you work with any sites that get indexed, rank, and stay in the same slot for moderately competitive terms comparing to a year or tow ago? Interested to hear other people's experience and how long we expect to wait for new content to settle Thanks

Ranked page is not desired page
I have a question on a problem I am currently faced with. There is a certain keyword that my employer wants to rank for. The good news is that sometimes it does rank in the top 5 pages of Google. (It drops in and out) The bad news is that it is going to a page that we need to keep, but not the ideal place we want people who are looking for that keyword to go to. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this type of situation and what tactic they used to get people to the better page.

Getting Google to provide a different URL in SERP
For one of my client’s sites, I have several keywords that are ranking in the top 5 positions. However, they have a high bounce rate. I believe this is because Google is delivering a different URL than the page we have optimized for the keyword. Any suggestions on ways I can get Google to present our preferred page?
