Which trumps: spam ranking or domain authority?
-
I am trying to manage my backlinks by removing ones with high spam links, but I am having trouble drawling the line between helpful/harmful links. One link, for instance, has a span ranking of 7 indicating a 30% chance of penalization from Google crawlers. This same link, however, also boasts a domain authority of 67 which indicates it is also potentially helpful to my own Google crawler success. My question is, which of these scores (spam rank and domain authority) trumps the other? Should I try to get the site owner to remove it? Am I even thinking about this issue correctly? If so, how would you suggest I draw the line in the future?

Great, I'll use that as a rule of thumb in the future. I think Moz should maybe emphasize this point as a way to think about backlink manangement. Thanks!

Ben - this all depends on your industry and the blogs/news sources in the industry. For example if all of your other backlinks have a DA of 80+ a 67 will be at the lower end of the spectrum. You'll always want to target backlinks with a higher DA than your own.
By doing so you'll see link authority being passed along to you.
It is a bit hard to answer and there is not hard rules in place for something like this, as each case is unique and there may be value in lower authority growing sites.

James,
My next question, then, would be: how should I approach this predicament in the future? Is there a threshold for DA/PA at which I disregard the potential helpfulness of the link and only worry about the spam score? Would you still say it was a helpful link if the DA was 50 instead of 67? How about a DA of 40? Perhaps my question becomes unanswerable as it becomes more philosophical and subjective?

Hey There Ben! In this case you'll always want to refer to what has more impact - the spam flags indicate a 30% likelihood that this is spam which is still leaving 70% that this is not spam, combine that with the DA/PA and this is still looking like a good link! You may want to monitor it over time during the next few indexes as good links can turn bad!

Spam links and Domain Authority
I have a site that I know was Domain Authority 35 but now Domain Authority 25 after someone sent a load of spam links to it, how can this be correct and how can I change it? Is it worth doing a disavow and will moz take that into account?

[URGENT] Domain Authority drops from 25 to 1
Hello, We have about 9 websites connected to moz. We frequently are checking reports and crawls. From November 24 to December 18th there was a dramatic drop from 25 to 1 one only one of our sites. Our Linking C-Blocks went from 2 to 0, Domain MozRank went from 3.75 to zero. Essentially everything that we have worked for and ranked in for the past 5 years of the website being live dropped to zero. We are extremely frustrated and we are doing everything out of our power to figure out what may have happened. Here are a few things that we have done in that time and we are hoping someone might be able to direct us in the right direction on what may be the issue. We are in the process of pushing our new website. We have added our new website to a site_root_2 directory. In this directory we have robots no follow metas and a robots.txt. We do this prior to pushing our new websites. We move our website to the root when it is done. We have also forced all our urls to https. If anyone could help us get to the bottom of this issue we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

How to interpret a possible spam link?
Hallo, Spam analysis is suggesting that my website may have a spam problem (score is 5). When I analyse the single spam links, I am puzzled. the links to my site are actually links in disqus comments I wrote myself on the linking site, in order to aswer REAL question of real people giving them honest and useful answers (and linking my site :-), like the link pointed out in the attached image, also pasted herebelow: http://www.androidiani.com/news/servizi-premium-indesiderati-lantitrust-contro-tim-vodafone-wind-e-3-213235 Most links have this same nature. Has this behaviour (which I consider natural, in good faith) been regarded as spammy? Should avoid linking my site in the comments I write on external sites? the links from comunicatistampagratis.it (towards the end of the list) are from a free press release website: you send them the press release, they publish it. Should I avoid using this free press release site? Should I avoid using any free press release site at all (since they are regarded as spammy)? is there a rule to learn (since apparently I have not been very good so far at using my good faith to separate good links from spammy links) whether a link can be spammy and therefore try and avoid it? thank you for you help.

Why is OSE showing a higher Domain Authority than Moz?
Moz has today run monthly reports for 2 of my clients' sites. For both of these, the Domain Authority reported on the Moz dashboard is several points lower than that shown by OSE today for the same sites. Why would that be?

OSE Compare Domains had Gone
So I have not been on Moz for a while but I have always liked the ability to compare multiple domains in Open site explorer. Has Moz removed this feature. if so... why?

Why does Google Webmaster Tools report I have inbound links from over 120 different domains and OSE reports I have 7
My client's site is www.graysonmountainrealestate.com. Google Webmaster Tools reports I have over 120 different domains linking to the site. Why does OSE report only 7? Thanks, Ken

Can anyone explain the cause of having root domain metrics much smaller than subdomain metrics?
Hi!! I'm comparing OSE metrics for a site named like www.mydomain.com and have the following results: Subdomain MozTrust 5.65 (that is www.mydomain.com subdomain) Root domain MozTrust 0.82 (that is mydomain.com domain) On the other hand one of my competitor have: Subdomain MozTrust 3.68 (that is www.otherdomain.com subdomain) Root domain MozTrust 3.67 (that is otherdomain.com domain) Both websites' root domains point to the www subdomain. So how come in my domain theres is such a huge difference between these metrics and on the competitor's site both values are very similar? I'd greatly appreciate any comment on this. Cheers, David
