Why use a wwwP subdomain naming convention
-
While working through a series of crawl reports and competitive insights for a site, I noticed one of the competitors had switched from a WWW-version to a wwwP-version. Looking back at the snapshot I took of this during the same time period in 2014, I noticed a significant drop in PA/DA by 20+/-.
I'm curious to know if anybody else has experienced something similar, and if anybody can provide insights on why a change like this would even be made?
I'll preface it with, everything we could see that this competitor was doing from the outside, was legitimate and propelling them in a positive direction.

Great points and very much appreciated discussion.
Upon further digging it very well could be CMS driven and either as an unknown by them, or one of those "it is what it is" situations and they're moving forward. This organization I cannot see it being anything of false legitimacy by any means.
I noticed it's on a lot of their top-level pages, especially navigation items and not necessarily secondary or tertiary level pages. This leads me to another speculation that they could be working on some A/B user testing also.
The wwwP is not being indexed or showing in the SERPs either.

Tough to say without more information. You could probably get a better idea by checking for other subdomains on that domain, what need they would have for subdomains (staging versions, international versions, archived sites, etc.), and if the old subdomain is still accessible. Might be intentional, might have been a mistake. I've seen a number of sites use wildcard subdomains and then accidentally get like 500 different arbitrary subdomains indexed.
If it's a large site, it may be because there is a particular CMS or some kind of technology on that particular subdomain that doesn't exist on the rest of the site. E.g., some sites will have a wordpress blog, but the Wordpress installation is only on a particular subdirectory [www.example.com/blog/] or on a particular subdomain [blog.example.com]. You could probably use something like the Chrome extension Wappalyzer and see what they're using that starts with a P and might find something there. Might be a PMwiki or Percussion install and they simply chose to handle it in a less than ideal way.
Doesn't necessarily make sense that domain authority would drop lockstep with page authority though.
Also, I'm not saying this is the case here, but it's worth keeping in mind when doing competitive analysis: Just because what you saw from the outside was legitimate, doesn't mean it was all legitimate. Some companies doing spammy linkbuilding behind the scenes block Moz's, Majestic's, etc. crawlers to prevent competitive insights.

What Website Platform would you use?
We are considering 1 maybe 3 websites (1 new 2 redesign) there are so many options with technology rolling over every 3 years it seems. Here are my obstacles: Wordpress: dynamic but easily hacked, often needs updating Joomla: attractive, but cumbersome to manage Custom: sleek and easier to manage, but gets outdated quickly Here are some variables: 80+ products, E-Commerce, Dynamic, Blog, Tons of images, SEO friendly, MUST not lose our rankings! OK, Moz friends, What do you recommend?

How to rewrite/redirect a folder name with .htaccess
I have a folder in my site that I want to rename. I don’t want to just rewrite the URL and keep my old folder name, I want to change the folder name and then do whatever is necessary with .hataccess to not lose search engine rankings. The folder name I want to change has a space in it and also is misspelled (whoops x2) Example. Mysite.com/old foldr/page.html Mysite.com/newfolder/page.html How would I go about doing this with .htaccess? Do I just switch the folder name on my server and then set up a redirect, or do I do a rewrite? Sorry now familiar with the terms or .htacces. Thanks all

Subdomain pdfs - do you track them?
We've enabled event tracking to monitor clicks to pdfs on our website. All of these pdfs are hosted in a subdomain. The thing is, we offer some valuable pdfs that get a lot of traffic from search engines but I can't track them on Google Analytics. Do you track such pdfs? I can't place tracking code as they are pdfs on a subdomain. Thoughts?

Is it possible to redirect the main www. domain - but keep a subdomain active?
Hi Mozzers, Quick question, which I hope one of you can answer... Let's say I have a website (i) www.example.com and on that a subdomain exists, (ii) subdomain.example.com. Let's say I want to change my main domain from www.example.com to www.newwebsite.com. I'd 301 all content, use GWT to notify Google of a change of address etc etc. Having done that, is it still possible to keep the original subdomain active? So, even though www.example.com has been redirected / transferred to www.newwebsite.com, subdomain.example.com would still exist. If that is possible, what is the implication for Domain Authority? On the one hand, I have transferred the main site (so DA from that will transfer to the new site); but part of that root domain is still active. Make sense? Any answers? Thanks everyone...

Is it a good idea to use sub-domains?
Hello everyone! I have a question about whether we should be using sub-domains. We are currently in the process of redesigning our site so this would be the time to do it. We are a reseller of brand name IT equipment (servers, storage, etc...) should we create a sub-domain for each brand for example: hp.domain.com dell.domain.com or should we just use folders instead like: domain.com/hp domain.com/dell does one have any more SEO value than the other? Thank you!

What Shooping Cart To Use?
Hi Any recommendations on shopping carts? I’m looking for something pretty cheap, not over $150 a month. But I don't want to sacrifice quality to save on loose change. Any suggestions?

Buying mutliple keyword rich domain names and directing them to one site
I've noticed some folks buying keyword rich domain names and pointing them to one site to try to rank for those keywords. An example of this is a plumbing business that buys domains like austinplumber.com, localaustinplumbingservice.com, bestplumberinaustin.com and then pointing these domains to their main website. Does this help the site rank for these key phrases? How does google see this? Thanks mozzers! Ron

Are Subdomains Beneficial?
Are subdomains beneficial? I have a client with 4 stores. As it stands, they use one domain, www.mainpage.com/store1, www.mainpage.com/store2, etc. Are there any big benefits to making these subdomains like store1.mainpage.com, store2.mainpage.com?
