International Homepage Advice
-
Hello, colleagues!
We have a conundrum. A client website has a good subdirectory strategy for localized/translated content for its various international markets, but nothing currently "lives" at the root. In my mind, this presents a challenge to search engines (note that we have had some trouble getting proper visibility overall, which is why I'm asking this question).
I'm looking for any links or just plain old good advice on why it's important to have a global homepage. Should that global homepage be in English? Most enterprise sites I've worked with do have a homepage that's in English, with the ability to select a country from a drop down in a nav across the site.
Any advice, best practices, etc. about why a global homepage is important and what language it could/should be in would be really helpful.
Hreflang tags would make sense, I guess, but each country has slightly different offerings so I'm not sure that it makes complete sense. In other words, one country's homepage may have completely different content than another's.
Thank you!

If have an international homepage, do make sure that all the content marketing that you write is white hat. For example, we sell demolition services, and we wanted to start expanding the company, so we rewrote the homepage to make sure that it was written in a white hat way

Thanks so much, Darin!

Let me first say I have limited experience in the international version but I do have some experience with "regional" versions.
We tend to look at the amount of traffic by language and links by location to see how well we are performing. You can set your root to the language that gets the best metrics. Then offer a language specific landing page for other languages.
We do this for law firms that service English French and Spanish.
Homepage is in English first, then we have "lawfirm.com/es" for spanish, "lawfirm.com/fr/ for French etc. Those act as "homepages" for those languages and have all navigation and text in those languages. Basically another version of the site but in the correct/preferred language.
Also the browser they use can help with this too. You can set a HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE to confirm they language they want to see the content in.
I'm not sure if there is a better way but that's what we do.

Tens of duplicate homepages indexed and blocked later: How to remove from Google cache?
Hi community, Due to some WP plugin issue, many homepages indexed in Google with anonymous URLs. We blocked them later. Still they are in SERP. I wonder whether these are causing some trouble to our website, especially as our exact homepages indexed. How to remove these pages from Google cache? Is that the right approach? Thanks

Blog-posts pages are dominating in search console "Internal Links". Only home-page at top!
Hi all, Ours is WordPress website and we have a blog...website.com/blog/. All the important pages in the website are well linked from top and footer menu. But in our webmasters...internal links section, only homepage is at the top. Blog-posts are others followed by homepage. I wonder why blog pages are dominating our website pages. Please give your suggestions on this. Do you think Google will give more priority for the blog-posts than website pages as they are more linked technically? Thanks

Hi guys, I have a question about linking to a product page for linkbuilding. Does that count adversely vs. linking to a homepage?
Hi - so until now we have been building links via blog posts and articles and linking them to the homepage. It seems the ranking of some of my top keywords has fallen so had a few questions/concerns: Does it affect the rankings adversely if I link to the product page vs the homepage? What is rule of thumb for increasing rankings of inside pages/keywords and building links to them? Thanks

Simon Covell Divorce messed up my rankings, please advice?
Hi there, I was getting good ranking on some of the 'Divorce' related keywords but after Simon Covell name involved with divorce, I've just noticed that I am pushed back to page 4 today. Page 1 is one full of magazine and newspaper websites, i don't think i can compete with them. Shall I wait and hope that this news will be old and hopefully they won't rank or is there anything I can do bring back my rankings? It was one of our good converting keyword 😞 Thanks

Domain Change: Leave The Old Domain Homepage Up
We are going to be redesigning our website and switching to a new domain. I think we will set up a permanent 301 redirect from each page of the old domain to a page on the new domain. We would like to leave the old domain homepage up with all content removed and have a link pointing to the new domain. Is there any SEO harm to leaving the old domain homepage up? Thank you! Jessie

Been Penalized, Starting from Scratch, Need Advice
Good Morning, We've been penalized for unnatural links on the site : http://goo.gl/JgK1e After attempting to contact many of the sites with links pointing at our site, and getting no response, we decided to start from scratch on a new domain : http://goo.gl/XUH3f The first thing I did once the new domain was up was remove all of the unique content (text) from the original site and place it on the new site... I am still having a difficult time getting the new site to rank in the SERPS. Can you guys please provide pointers as to what steps should be taken to get the new domain, http://goo.gl/XUH3f a high ranking in the SERPS? Thanks!!

Today all of our internal pages all but completely disappeared from google search results. Many of them, which had been optimized for specific keywords, had high rankings. Did google change something?
We had optimized internal pages, targeting specific geographic markets. The pages used the keywords in the url title, the h1 tag, and within the content. They scored well using the SEOmoz tool and were increasing in rank every week. Then all of a sudden today, they disappeared. We had added a few links from textlink.com to test them out, but that's about the only change we made. The pages had a dynamic url, "?page=" that we were about to redirect to a static url but hadn't done it yet. The static url was redirecting to the dynamic url. Does anyone have any idea what happened? Thanks!
