External Links through Open site explorer
-
I have just ran an Open site explorer query on our site due to having one of a constant ranking keywords drop, and found that we have 48 new links appear on the report under the anchor text 'home'
These are not normal links, and I cannot see where or how these have been connected to our site
for example:
<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
|http://regvac.com/TrIsland.swb
<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
| http://meteonorm.com/fileadmin/tmy3/722066ndry3.rdm |<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
| http://www.sexintheshower.net/downloads/SS960-12-pack.psd?ActDo=ShowArt&Information_ID=2396&Parent_ID=&type=&Langue_ID=An&rubID=3068473 |My question is how and why are these appearing on the seomoz open site explorer report? What are they? How can I get them removed, and let google know this was nothing to do with us?
Thanks

Hi Stuart,
This is a known issue with OSE. Linkscape doesn't quite know what to do with downloadable files and is falsely listing some of them as links. A Linkscape engineer has some more details on this Q&A post at http://www.seomoz.org/q/how-are-our-competitors-getting-these-inbound-linking-domains. So sorry for the confusion, and we are working to get this taken care of.

Thanks for your reply, In fact I did get a responce from one of the webmasters who did in fact clarify that the links are not directing to any webpage - they are download links of files.
So on this note, I think I will follow your direction on this one and not invest to heavily on it. I am however confused why this data only seems to appear on SEOmoz Open site explorer..
Thanks again, and all the best

Excuse me for having a little chuckle at the psd that my firefox tried to download after clicking the sexintheshower link!
But on a serious note, we have links like these too and it has puzzled me in the past. I've also noticed this sort of thing on competitors sites and to be honest it just seems like one of those things that are best ignored. It's not going to hurt your rankings in any way and to try hunt down owners via whois lookups etc would likely just be a wild goose chase!
I'm sure there will be someone on here that could give a technical reason why these links appear, but I do believe it's not something to invest much time in

Does the CSV export lists all and ONLY the URLS which are in the google index? If not: does a report is available where all and ONLY the URLS are listed which are in google index? Many thanks! Henrik

Google and Open Site Explorer not showing as many links
I've noticed this past week that when you search for the links pointing to a given site, by using the "link:" operator, that Google not showing as many links as they use to. I noticed this also with Open Site Explorer, it is not showing the detail link information as much as it did before. Is Google trying to mask what we can view now on competitors backlinks? If so, how can we see the backlink building that our competitors are doing?

Benefits of reducing on page links
This is more of a discussion point. What would be the measurable results of reducing the number of on page links, specifically on a home page, but let's assume by way of a large navigation menu most of the pages have a lot of links" For instance, would any of the stats on the MozBar be affected (let's start with the home page). Would the Page Authority or MozRank change at all, perhaps because there is less "juice" flowing out of the home page? Thanks! 🙂

Conflict in reported link data
I have a competitor in a campaign - the campaign report shows 181 linked domains BUT - the site explorer report shows only 15 linked domains. Which is correct? And if the site explorer is correct - how do we fix the campaign report? Open site Explorer Findings??
On OSE, I am comparing two websites(A and B) and one has a page authority higher than the other (35(A) vs 36 (B)), but all the linking metrics are in favor for website A except for the linking C block (A has 11 and B has 12). The website B is ranked in page 1 for couple competitive keywords whereas the website A don't show up in the search at all. Why is that? Does B have better content and is more kw focused?

Can Open Site Explorer Do This?
Is there any way to set up Open Site Explorer to show these things for competitor external backlinks: Google Page Rank of the page the backlink is on Google Page Rank of the domain the backlink is on Whether the backlink is a follow or no follow Is this possible in OSE? If not, are there any other SEOMOZ Tools that will do this? Thanks.
