External Links through Open site explorer
-
I have just ran an Open site explorer query on our site due to having one of a constant ranking keywords drop, and found that we have 48 new links appear on the report under the anchor text 'home'
These are not normal links, and I cannot see where or how these have been connected to our site
for example:
<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
|http://regvac.com/TrIsland.swb
<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
| http://meteonorm.com/fileadmin/tmy3/722066ndry3.rdm |<colgroup span="1"><col span="1" width="696"></colgroup>
| http://www.sexintheshower.net/downloads/SS960-12-pack.psd?ActDo=ShowArt&Information_ID=2396&Parent_ID=&type=&Langue_ID=An&rubID=3068473 |My question is how and why are these appearing on the seomoz open site explorer report? What are they? How can I get them removed, and let google know this was nothing to do with us?
Thanks

Hi Stuart,
This is a known issue with OSE. Linkscape doesn't quite know what to do with downloadable files and is falsely listing some of them as links. A Linkscape engineer has some more details on this Q&A post at http://www.seomoz.org/q/how-are-our-competitors-getting-these-inbound-linking-domains. So sorry for the confusion, and we are working to get this taken care of.

Thanks for your reply, In fact I did get a responce from one of the webmasters who did in fact clarify that the links are not directing to any webpage - they are download links of files.
So on this note, I think I will follow your direction on this one and not invest to heavily on it. I am however confused why this data only seems to appear on SEOmoz Open site explorer..
Thanks again, and all the best

Excuse me for having a little chuckle at the psd that my firefox tried to download after clicking the sexintheshower link!
But on a serious note, we have links like these too and it has puzzled me in the past. I've also noticed this sort of thing on competitors sites and to be honest it just seems like one of those things that are best ignored. It's not going to hurt your rankings in any way and to try hunt down owners via whois lookups etc would likely just be a wild goose chase!
I'm sure there will be someone on here that could give a technical reason why these links appear, but I do believe it's not something to invest much time in

Need help locating a 404 link
My reports are showing a 404 error for a link to a page in our WP site for which we changed the URL months ago. I can't find where the link is coming from. I used Screaming Frog, but can't find where it might tell me the origin of the link, only that it exists. I am pretty sure it's internal. Can someone please tell me how to find the originating page so I can remove the link without having to comb through every page of the site to look for it? Thanks!

To Many Links on site
I've had an issue with to many links on the site. My drop down menu, secondary footer and footer. The report told me that I had 253 links on each page. I then programmed my secondary footer to dynamic and ran a crawl and my links reduced accordingly to 201. Then turned the footer into dynamic and ran a crawl with my links increasing to 1500. This also happened between each phase but en went away. Oddly enough, my domain authority increased as well as other factors in the crawl report. This too many links thing is driving me crazy. Please provide some guidance.

Strange nothing site ranking
Hi There. If you check who ranks for "credit cards" there is a website https://www.woolworthsmoney.com.au/ that is in position #5 This is a highly competitive keyword, but OpenSiteExporer.org cannot give me any backlinks for it. it says "No Data Available for this URL" The same thing happens in Market Samurai - no data 1. What are these guys doing that the others are not? 2. How come OSE can't pull any data for it?

Is anybody else having great difficulty in finding good link opportunities on Open Site Explorer?
I've been using OSE for a while now, and I'm struggling to see any value in it. When I search my competitors link profiles, I find just hundreds and hundreds of crappy reciprocal links, splogs or the like. I have to go through days and days (thousands of links) before I find anything worth using. Is anybody having this sort of problem? Thanks

Can Open Site Explorer Do This?
Is there any way to set up Open Site Explorer to show these things for competitor external backlinks: Google Page Rank of the page the backlink is on Google Page Rank of the domain the backlink is on Whether the backlink is a follow or no follow Is this possible in OSE? If not, are there any other SEOMOZ Tools that will do this? Thanks.
