Why do branded manufacturer websites have multiple pages for their products?

My favorite golf ball is the Srixon Tour Yellow ball. Srixon has a product detail page here (www.srixon.com) AND there's also a product detail page here at shop.srixon.com.
Is there any sort of SEO penalty here because there's some duplication? Does the fact the store is a separate subdomain make this more allowable?
Many branded manufacturer websites work this way but it just doesn't make sense to me to have two product pages that you have to manage content when you can have just 1 with a call to action.
I also work for a branded manufacturer and am considering rebuilding our website from the ground up with the online store and the main/marketing website blended into one to eliminate this duplication. We have this same duplicated marketing/store setup as well.
any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tim,
My point really was that with the right expertise you should be able to improve both usability and seo usefulness of the pages you have without needing to create alternative pages. Even unfriendly URL's can be dealt with by using URL rewrites.
If you have strong page authority for your product pages now, a change of structure would generally be a last consideration for me.
The MozBar is really useful for this kind of page-level analysis. If you work through the page attributes and elements it is easy to identify both tech and optimization issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Thank you so much for your reply. Your info about page authority was telling. Holding technical issues as a controlled variable, If I can have an "add to cart" button on a page authority of 44 instead of page authority 1 and be able to control the content for a "best case scenario" for my users, I've got to believe that is a win-win for both the user and SEO.
To your point though, I worry we will lose our strong page authority on our product pages if we switch platforms (even if I am able to keep the URLS exactly the same).

Hi Tim,
If you have the MozBar loaded, you can check the Page Elements for both pages and you will find that they exist on two completely different IP addresses. So, given that there is a significant difference in the information provided by each page (one is much more user-oriented), then duplicate content is probably not something they are particularly concerned about.
Again, if you use the MozBar and look at the SEOmoz Link Analysis for each page, you will find that one is serving as a landing page for the product with a lot of internal links and a few external links evident. As a result of the content and links, it has a Page Authority of 44, while the other has a Page Authority of just 1.
My guess would be that their store setup makes it difficult for them to add content to product pages and perhaps they are concerned by the "unfriendly" nature of the 30 odd character product ID for SEO.
I have a client site where the addition of content to product pages was an issue, but in that case our Chief programmer wrote me a script so that I could edit as I wanted. If we hadn't had that ability, then I guess another option would have been to create content rich static pages as a work around.

Temporarily redirecting a small website to a specific url of another website
Hi, I would like to redirect a small website that contains info about a specific project temporarily to a specific url about this project on my main website. Reason for this is that the small website doesn't contain accurate info anymore. We will adapt the content in the next few weeks and then remove the redirect again. Should I set up a 301 or a 302? Would you redirect Website A to Website B, when Website B is in the middle of a HTTP=>HTTPS migration?
Hey guys, I'm curious on your thoughts around this scenario... Website A: 35,000 monthly pageviews 1,000 pages 375 root linking domains currently HTTPS focused on one topic weak rankings for competitive keywords Website B: 3M monthly pageviews 32,500 pages 3,500 root linking domains started HTTP to HTTPS migration 1 week ago. 1/3 of pages indexed as HTTPS. focused on many topics strong rankings for competitive keywords Requirement: I want to have a reliable read on how Website A's keyword rankings change after redirecting it's pages to Website A. This post-migration analysis will be used as a basis to assess the risk of redirecting another website we own that is similar to Website A into Website B. My question: Would you wait until most of the pages on Website B are indexed as HTTPS before doing a 301 of Website A to Website B? Please back up your answer with reasons why or why not 🙂

Product Page rankings - How to boost?
Hi folks I am responsible for an e-commerce website. Our website is doing very well but I believe that our product pages should be ranking more highly than they currently are. When taking over my current role, it became clear that a number of changes would need to be made to try and boost the under performing product pages. Amongst other things I therefore implemented the following: New Product content - we have placed a massive focus on reworking all product content so that it is unique and offers value to the reader. The new content includes videos, images and text that is all keyword rich but (I hope) not seen as overly spammy. Duplicate content - the CMS was creating multiple versions of the same page - I addressed this by implementing 301 redirects and adding canonical links. This ensures there is now only 1 version of the page Parameters - I instructed Google to not index certain URLs containing specific parameters Internal links - I have tried to improve the number of links to the products from relevant key category pages My question is, although some of the changes have only been in place for a month, what else can I do to ensure that the product pages rank as highly as possible. As an e-commerce website with so many products it is very difficult to link to these product pages directly, so any tips or suggestions would be welcome! Our website scores A but on google we are still on 7th page
Hi all, I have run on page keyword optimizations with exact terminology used to find our company service or our competition on google. We have ranked A, with almost all points complete. I did the same for our main competitor and they ranked F. Then i did page positioning on Google and they get on page 1 fifth line and we get page 7. We have plenty of unique content and extensive website.

SEOmoz is only crawling 2 pages out of my website
I have checked on Google Webmaster and they are crawling around 118 pages our of my website, store.itpreneurs.com but SEOmoz is only crawling 2 pages. Can someone help me? Thanks Diogo

Duplicate Content on Product Pages
I'm getting a lot of duplicate content errors on my ecommerce site www.outdoormegastore.co.uk mainly centered around product pages. The products are completely different in terms of the title, meta data, product descriptions and images (with alt tags)but SEOmoz is still identifying them as duplicates and we've noticed a significant drop in google ranking lately. Admittedly the product descriptions are a little bit thin but I don't understand why the pages would be viewed as duplicates and therefore can be ranked lower? The content is definitely unique too. Branded Searches -- Should I Name My Products Differently?
I know that branded searches are a large component of whether sites were hit by Panda or not, and I wonder if moving forward, I should always include the name of my site (domain) in the name of the product. For example, if I have a product with a unique name such as 'history maps' should I change the name to include my brand name, i.e '[domain] history maps'? Or, if users search for the unique product name, is that sufficient?
