Advice for brand new site

Dear All
I have been an SEO for several years now, and have just laucnhed a new site www.householdsaver.co.uk its in its early stages as I expect to add a community option where people post deals and offers they have found, share them with friends etc
My question is really are all the old seo practices still worth doing? Things like directory sites, blog comments, articles sites, social bookmarking etc.... (I have already built up twitter users on the account before the site went live)
With Moz's trust factor is it best to go for highrank trust sites first or...
I guess you could say that I am suffering from what do I do first and is it all still worth doing and what are the early pit falls to think about..? ie too many links too soon and from to high or to low trusted sites?
Any comments from anyone who have put a new site live in the past couple of years would be appricated.
Thanks
James

Yeah MozRank to PageRank is a reasonable measure to use. MozRank should usually be about the same as PageRank, so if PageRank is a lot lower, you can infer that Google have applied an penalty to that site and reduced it's page rank.
Because page rank isn't updated often, there are times when it's not always accurate, but usually it's a good indicator.

thanks Shelly, I already added the site to yahoo's directory and will look at best of the web, and I agree on relevant links and will use my tools with what you have said in mind re small amount of domains and had never thought about what the difference in moz rank to page rank means before, so i will ponder on that!!, - I will have a refresh on the moz beginners page! best James

Generally link building from directories and the like can still have a positive effect as long as you don't let the link profile of the site get too spammy. A link profile filled with just spammy links is bound to raise google's eyebrows and you may find your site being devalued because of it.
If I'm building links I tend to look out for the following;
-
If the MozRank of a site is 1.5+ points higher than the page rank, then there's probably something fishy going on and you may want to avoid getting a link from that source
-
If the site has many, many links coming in, but only from a small amount of domains then again, probably something fishy there, which google could easily pick up on.
-
Gut instinct. If the site looks spammy as hell and has a rubbish human editing approach then you may well want to avoid it.
Remember there are plenty of decent directories about such as Yahoo! directory and Best of the Web.
Also, you're less likely to create bad links if you find directories and blogs that are relevant to your site. So if you find household directories or money saving sites, then google will have less reason to devalue the links.
Lastly, check out SEOMoz's beginners guide http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo - Don't let the 'beginners' part put you off, there's some great up to date tips and links in there that will help any SEO.

In my opinion the 'old seo practices' are still worth doing. The link building you mention will all still add strength to the domain, just be a bit more strict on the type of sites you build links from.
As for where to start first I normally start getting all the on page and technical stuff sorted first before I start link building.

Is it possible to rank a second site, for my buisness, for the same location?
I have an insurance agency, and recently set up a new site, specifically for personal lines insurance. My question is; Is it worth trying to rank this site, by using backlinks and unique content? It will have the same address, and location as my main site. I'm also concerned Google may frown on that.. Any input appreciated.

Interdomain linking from partner sites
I'm looking for a bit of advice on best practices when it comes to linking domains that are operated by the same umbrella corporation. Are links from the header/footer no longer beneficial? Is there such a thing as too many links among domains? How would you reap the SEO value of a small network of sites that were associated? Thanks!!

New Site Checklist - Links and Social Aspects
Hi I have a new site which launched around 6 weeks ago, new domain name with a partial keyword match on it, so its going to be a long process but one which I want to tred along the right path for long term results What I am looking for is a checklist if possible on sites that the site (which is a UK based home improvments company) should be listed on? The difficulty is because it can seem a boring subject (windows and doors) it makes it difficult to find authentic quality links, especially with no big budgets or pools of article writers I have registered against the likes of Brownbook, Yelp, Yell.com, Qype, Google Places covering the local aspect but what about the general external links Is it advisable to stay away from directory listings, blog comments, forum posts etc which is what a lot of the competition are doing (weatherseal .co.uk anglianhome .co.uk etc

Ad banner from news site
Hi Everyone, I have a company calling me about adding a banner for our business on a news site for a monthly fee. The fee includes the banner and a profile page. The domain authority for the news site is high (84) but the profile page that it links to actually goes to a 3rd party site (DA=65). It is from this page that I could link back to our site. Aside from the marketing value of the 250x300 ad on a page that gets a ton of traffic, would it be better to link back to our site from the profile page on the 3rd party site or directly from the banner on the news site? I hope I've given you enough info. Best,

How to Add Content to a Product-Focused Site
I recently took over management of the SEO work for the following site: http://www.grovercorp.com/rings-and-seals/. I want to do link building, but don't have a ton of experience with it. From what I've read, offering linkable content is the best way to get links. However, this site -- like many in industrial B-2-B -- is focused primarily on promoting their products. I'd like tto offer an article or add an infographic, but am not sure where I would put it? It doesn't seem like the architecture offers a good place to add linkable content. Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

Ranking for competitor brand terms
My client sells security software online. Our keyword research shows massive traffic for competitor brands relative to the non-branded terms and my guess is that this traffic converts well. I'd like to figure out a way to get some of that traffic for my client without crossing any ethical boundaries. The only thing I can think of is having a comparison page with good onsite optimization. Does anyone else have any tips on how to rank for these terms?

When looking at my site in open site explorer the top results are very dodgy spam and porn sites backlinking to us. Is this having a negative impact on our site?
When using open site explorer to check out who is linking to us I was surprised that the top results are spam and porn sites. These are completely irrelevant links. Does this have a negative impact on our site? What can we do to combat this?
