Newspaper SEO: How to go about link building for news websites
-
Newspaper SEO is tricky business, primarily because of the way you deal with Keywords. So far, I have been unable to find a comprehensive guide to newspaper SEO via SEOmoz, although I'm a big fan and this website has actually made my career! So, my question is, how do you go about building links for newspaper websites, what keywords should you use and what link building strategies would work?
-
Thanks for your feedback, but I'm talking about newspaper websites in particular. Would you use this for a news website? Also, if you have the budget how would you go about link building? From what I gather, all budget, time and effort should be put in towards generating interesting content and then promoting it via all possible channels on the internet. Right?
-
I do it. Unfortunately it's sometimes necessary when there isn't enough of a budget for creative, etc... (small businesses that can afford nothing more than the cheapest of cheap links). It's not the right way to go though, and certainly not in the long term, but for some businesses it's the only chance they have to compete.
-
What would you say about cheap tactics like dropping links in comments where they are do-follow and things like that. I totally understand your point regarding how to work with newspaper websites. Would you factor in the use of social sites like reddit, digg, stumple upon etc...and if so, how would you use them?
-
Now see, your answer just confirmed what I've been advocating. I just thought I might be missing out on something doable in terms of link building for a newspaper website. Cheers!
-
Agree with this 100%. Also make sure you're handling wire information correct. Have Nofollows setup correctly unless you actually want to pass juice back to websites. A big SEO trick is to publish link rich press releases and send them through wires. Most publications fix this, but a few dont. dont be one of the few.
-
Easy, for something like that you don't link build at all, you just publish, publicize and promote. I assume that it's original and news-worthy content if it's a newspaper, so interesting stories, etc... In which case all you need to do is get it out there in front of people and the links will come naturally.

Google Indexed Images: Website Vs Social Media
I use Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram to post images that are already featured on my website. I have been following a routine of uploading the images to these social media platforms only after I can see Google has indexed the image from my original site. My website is ecommerce and the product images drive sales more than any other factor. The thinking behind my method was that when these images are posted on Pinterest, Twitter and the various Instagram crawler sites (I realise Instagram images aren’t indexed directly), Google would recognise that the image was already attributed to my website. The ‘duplicate’ image would not therefore be indexed and the originally uploaded website image would remain in ‘Google Images’. After completing various searches and reviewing other Q&A’s on Moz, it seems as though this is in no way guaranteed and images reposted on social media platforms may still replace the already indexed image from the website. I am assuming this is because Google views these platforms as more authoritative than mine. I usually change the image by adding logos, text, backgrounds, borders etc before posting on Pinterest and this seems to have worked most of the time (both the original and ‘amended for Pinterest’ versions are often indexed) but images posted on other platforms are usually identical. Does it make sense to continue with my method or am I shooting myself in the foot by reposting these images on social media at all? I obviously want customers searching for products, who then click on an image, to be directed to my site rather than one of my social media pages or worse, an image reposting site. Additionally, If I post images on social media before they are uploaded to my website (for example to tease a product launch), would Google likely class these images as the ‘original’ and therefore be less likely to index the website version of the image once it is uploaded? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is Pinterest's Embed a Pin good for SEO?
I was curious if by having Pinterest embed pins on my site will add SEO value... This would be used mainly on product pages for alternative images, closeup detail, any type of image to answer a customers question. I would accompany the pin with more text as another way of adding content to the page. Example on my site: Wicker Sofa product page with Pinterest Embed live. Also attached the screenshot of the code that is used by Pinterest pin embed widget. Hoping that extra unique content + social activity repins or follows, would help my store's SEO. Thank you for your answers in advance... 3uqUz57.png
