Should we focus on Directory Submissions
-
When reviewing our competitors links in Open Site Explorer I noticed that many of them have directory links. We are an online retailer of gourmet food gifts.
So should we focus some of our link building efforts on directory submissions?

Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded the Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory updates and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

Hi Adam
I think you have it right when you say "some" of your link building efforts.
I would look at those that may rank highly for your keyphrases but also if you are a local business I would look to get in local business directories for your area.
I would not focus all your efforts in this area though.

Further to what Aaron has already said - take a good look at the directory you are going to list in. Is it tidy and clean, or full of adsense? Does it rank ok, and do the section and region pages rank?
Also - see how deep your link will be in their structure. Dmoz used to be one of the best directories to be listed in until it got too big. If you list in the correct area now in Dmoz, most of the time your listing will end up being 5 or more directories deep, in which case the SE's are unlikely to spider it any time soon.
Well selected directory submission = great
Paid "we'll submit your site to a 500,000 directories" = waste of time and cash

It depends on what your company focus is. If you are a local business with actual store fronts, yes absolutely. If you are web facing only but provide local phone numbers you can do that as well and simply leave out your address.
The Lesser (non Google, Yahoo & Bing) local listings won't make you jump 20 spots overnight but can help drive valuable traffic and also provide valuable data across the web that can help with your trust and rankings. (Ratings, Links, Visits etc.)
If you provide a real company and see value in possible traffic through local listings then the answer is Yes - spend some time and do it right.
Fill out every listing in as much detail as possible.
Might not bring loads of traffic but a couple visits per month every month from here on out should help.

Automatic Directory Submissions
I was talking to someone about automatic directory submissions with someone lately, and would love the thoughts of the community here. Basically, the thought was that automatic directory submissions wouldn't get flagged by Google, because they're directories, not necessarily spam links. Is this still true in a post-penguin world? He hasn't seen any negative effects from it yet, but I'm still cautious. My thoughts would be not to depend on the automatic submissions, but to use them as a supplement. If a handful (maybe 50/mo) of directory links could be submitted automatically, that could free up more time for content development and promotion, which is where I believe the real value lies. It would also help skeptical clients feel better about having a certain number of links. So, what have you seen so far? Is this dangerous, safe, or fairly pointless?

Yahoo directory inclusion
Does anyone know what the odds are of a website getting rejected from the yahoo directory. I don't want to pay $300 to have my site declined. They have very basic inclusion requirements but I'm not sure how selective they are with accepting websites. From personal experience does anyone have any idea of how hard/easy/likely you are to get listed if you pay the $300?

Link Directories
Hi there, We're very shortly launching a new website so as part of our link strategy we will be linking to directories found with the Link Acquisition Assistant for various keyword searches. I was wondering at what point is it not worthwhile submitting to these directories with regards PA and DA? For example if a directory has a domain authority of 69 but the page authority for the keyword in question is only 1, would it be a waste of time? Cheers

Our website has seen a steady decline in rankings over the past few months, is there any merit to paid bulk directory submission? Or could it potentially harm our campaign.
Our website has been experiencing a slow but steady decline in rankings despite our activity on social media platforms, is there any value in paying a large sum for bulk directory submission? Or will this only result in our overall website authority decreasing further due to unnatural links. Would really appreciate any help.

Multiple submissions to article directories
Hello, I would like to ask if I can submit the same article to multiple article directories. I have read that while only the first published article will gain credit and show on search engines, but the all the links generated from the publishing the article at different sites will still tally up and count as separate backlinks to my website. Is this true, or is 1 or a few links going to be counted from the 1 article?

Is it really worth it to submit to Yahoo Directory for $300 per year?
The fee does not even guarantee inclusion - and if you are accepted, does that link really add enough value to justify paying an annual $300 fee?
