Duplicate content on index.htm page

How do I avoid duplicate content on the index.htm page .
I need to redirect the spider from the /index.htm file to the main root of http://www.manandhisvan.com.au and hence avoid duplicate content. Does anyone know of a foolproof way of achieving this without me buggering up the complete site
Cheers
Freddy

Thanks
That code looks very easy but I tested it on a "test" site and the site went off-line.
Now I am too scared to test it on the main site. I will contact the hosting company as Ryan suggested.

Thanks Ryan, I like the bit about contacting the web hosting company to make the change. Last thing I want to do is %^&$ up the whole site. I tested the .htaccess on a test site and, as you said, it took the site offline.
I will investigate the dropping of the .hml extensions, however; the site is well placed on google so , again, i don't really want to risk any adverse change.
cheers
Michael

Christopher's answer is correct if you are on an apache server.
While modifying your .htaccess file is easy, the slightest mistake can take your site offline. If you have managed hosting (most people do) I would suggest asking your web host to make the change. It should be free and easy for them.
You may also consider dropping the .htm from your site's pages. The technology extension is not helpful and just lengthens the URL.

Add a redirect to the .htaccess file, as in:
Redirect 301 /index.htm http://www.manandhisvan.com.au
Best,
Christopher

Which is more valuable in a landing page, content or functionality?
I have two possible landing pages to focus off page links and paid ad links to, one page has space for content but basically only serves as a springboard to a map view style listing page. The idea is to use this page full of good content to build search engine value. The map view page is the most functional and is what visitors would ultimately be seeking, but has no real room for content. Are these content landing pages useful? Would it be better to focus on user functionality even though there is no space for content, and would search engines naturally apply for value to these pages? Are these landing pages necessary? The url's in question are http://www.rentcollegepads.com/marquette/search and http://www.rentcollegepads.com/marquette Thanks guys!

On the index page, I have the following: I have never put any thought into which index path is the best to use. http://www.example.com http://www.example.com/ http://www.example.com/index.php Could someone shed some light on this for me? Does it make a difference? Thanks! Ryan

Duplicate content: is it possible to write a page, delete it and use it for a different site?
Hi, I've a simple question. Some time ago I built a site and added pages to it. I have found out that the site was penalized by Google and I have neglected it. The problem is that I had written well-optimized pages on that site, which I would like to use on another website. Thus, my question is: if I delete a page I had written on site 1, can use it on page 2 without being penalized by Google due to duplicate content? Please note: site one would still be online. I will simply delete some pages and use them on site 2. Thank you.

Cross-Domain Canonical and duplicate content
Hi Mozfans! I'm working on seo for one of my new clients and it's a job site (i call the site: Site A).
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | MaartenvandenBos
The thing is that the client has about 3 sites with the same Jobs on it. I'm pointing a duplicate content problem, only the thing is the jobs on the other sites must stay there. So the client doesn't want to remove them. There is a other (non ranking) reason why. Can i solve the duplicate content problem with a cross-domain canonical?
The client wants to rank well with the site i'm working on (Site A). Thanks! Rand did a whiteboard friday about Cross-Domain Canonical
