Where to get started?
-
I just joined as a Pro member and am fascinated by all the strategies. I was wondering what your opinion is on where to get started. I am familiar with SEO, but am interested in strategies and techniques people use to make the process easier, more effective, etc.

Before you dig deep into SEO, I think that it would be best to plan the following.....
* The objectives of your website (what do you want to accomplish for yourself and what you want your visitors to do that will make your goals happen)
* The content strategy for your site... create a list of content resources for your site, determine where they will come from, how they will work together to accomplish your goals
The above will work together to determine the design of your site, the navigation and the keywords that you will be attacking.
After you have done the above then read the SEOMoz Beginners Guide to SEO. Then, after you know something about SEO, go back and revisit the objectives outlined above and tweak based upon what you have learned. Then, go back and restudy SEO.
Defining your objectives and determining how they can be promoted with SEO are two very important parts of being a good webmaster.

Yep, a good suggestion there by Kyle

Well a great place to start was this Q&A Forum, so well done there.
Another starting point could be regarding getting the house in shape, as in making use of the On-page Optimization reports to identify any potential issues with your pages and site.
Could perhaps move on from there to a Link Analysis of your site and your main competitors so enhance your linking strategy.
Hope that helps.

Simon

In the right-corner of the navigation bar is the site's search box. Type in link building and you will be overwhelmed with the large number of well-written blog articles which have been written on the topic in the past couple of years.

thanks! All aspects, but particularly link building

My homepage is not getting indexed by google for some reason
My homepage http://www.truebluelifeinsurance.com is not indexed by google. The rest of my site is indexed. The hompage is indexed by bing. I looked in the webmaster tools and there is no indication why. I believe the issue started when I did a site re-design in August. Any ideas?

Idea for the Best Method of getting REAL Keyword Search Data
I've been using googles keyword tools to get keyword search data, but I'm pretty sceptical of some of the results it throws out on number of searches. On a number of keywords - particularly when you get to longtail, I've seen results which cannot possibly be right. So - I am trying to find out a way of getting REAL data I can trust. Here are my thoughts on a possible method of getting this key data:
Moz Pro | | James77
1/. Firstly I am taking on the assumption that the adwords campaign monitoring statistics are more reliable and accurate than the keyword research tools - correct me if I am wrong! 2/. Then take a load of keywords you wish to monitor and create didfferent ads for them based of EXACT match. 3/. Make sure non of your adverts conflict with each other, so you may have to turn off any other campaigns you have running. 4/. Put you bids and available spend as high as possible, so that ideally you will your ads will always be shown for every search match, and ideally always come in No1 spot on the ads. IE your aim is to create a neutral environment where your ads are shown for every search match and appear in the exact same position for each search match. Run the campaign for a period of time long enough to be confident that you have enough search data. From this you should have the vital data on keyword searches done on your exact match keywords. 5/. Repeat the test, but this time use phrase matches and again make sure there are no conflicts. 6/. Repeat again with broad match - this would require very careful implimentation not to have any conflicts and you would likely need to make heavy use of the "Not Include" keywords. What are your thoughts on the above process? - Any flaws, or other better solutions? Obviously one key thing with doing this is you need to have to be prepared to have a decent budget to get this data - but it won't be wasted as you will also be getting the adwords traffic. Thanks0
