Link exchange with nofollow return
-
I own a gaming site and a common practice with gaming sites is to link with other sites that post about similar game franchises.
I noticed that some sites do this and they put nofollows on their links back. What is your thought on this?
Should I remove their link if they do that? Should I keep it up and just be glad to get thousands of nofollow links in return for some dofollows out of my site?

Thanks

Link Exchanges are a high risk strategy, Google actively seek out and penalise sites that participate in some of them. ~ A nofollow link is usually worthless from an SEO perspective as the spiders will usually not follow the link. So poor quality links (which links from exchanges usually are) that are also nofollow are rather pointless. ~ A few good quality links will be of much more benefit than many many links from a link exchange.

Thanks for the response. I create a lot of content and get a lot of links that way. But when I do use link exchanges like mentioned above then what do you think aboutthe nofollow situation

Hi Noah, (Apologies for the lack of paragraphing here, doesn't work on an iPad). ~ Recipricol Links aren't that beneficial anyway, one-way free followed relevant inbound links with good anchor text from reputable websites is the way to go. Gaming sites often find it tough in search as there is so much dodgy link work going on. 'My advice is to Only Link Out to another website if it's a valuable link for your visitors to follow'. If not, don't link out. There are plenty of great websites around that do provide Follow links, often within different though related industries (Gaming is leisure, so non-gaming leisure sites will often be good sites to get a link from). Try producing some great new content, an idea could be an Infographic on the History of Gaming, include a text link in the infographic. Distribute this well, other sites would love to be able to provide their visitors with this type of content. In return, you'll get some great PR and likely a number of good inbound links. Hope that helps, Regards, Simon

Any reason to nofollow outbound links to social platforms?
This one is stumping me - a site I'm working on has decided to nofollow all of their outbound links to LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. I can't find a reason for doing that...I think it's from the old and mistaken suspicion that this would deliver link equity away from the site. Everything I've read says that there's no downside to dofollow outbound links as long as they are to legit sites and on the up-and-up (e.g., not overly link-trading with another site, for instance). Thoughts?

Should blogger award badges/links be nofollowed?
I'm pretty sure the answer to this will be a big yes. Obviously this is a tactic that can be gamed quite easily, but I wanted to know if there are any clear guidelines on this. We've done a post about the most influential food bloggers using our own tool, so there's proper data behind the top ten. We wanted to reach out and let them know, give them a badge to include that might drive a bit of traffic and raise some brand awareness. That's why the question has come up as we want to make sure we advise the bloggers properly if a nofollow is best practice.

Why Links from Top Level Domains doesn't Pass Link Equity?
Hello, I have a doubt about Equity-Passing links report of OpensiteExplorer.org According to Sam Weber http://moz.com/community/users/432678 links which pass value from one page to another including followed 301 and Meta refresh links are under Equity-Passing links. I am surprising after looking at the links report generated by opensiteexplorer.org. Most of the article and directory links which have low DA and PA are under Equity-Passing links. Whereas websites like EzineArticle or Articlebase which have good DA and PA are not found in either Equity-passing links or under only nofollow category. Please suggest me if the report of Opensiteexplorer is not good enough or the links from the site like Ezine Article doesn’t pass the link equity. Thanks.

Link or Ad
I recently requested a link back from a site that is ranking 2nd for a term that i'm working on and they said they would gladly give me the link and remove my competitors but would also like me to have an ad on the same page for an annual fee that i could link to a landing page. I know that paying for links is no good and google can penalize you. so do i pay them and do a no follow to the landing page from the ad and call it a day? and how does google differentiate an ad from a link?

Pursuing Links on Sites You Have a Link From
Is it a bad idea to spend resources to get a second link from a site that already links to you? It seems like the marginal value of each additional link is much smaller than the first link.

Reciprocal Link Exchanges?
I have a spanky new website with absolutely no incoming links at all. Someone suggested a link exchange site (LinkMarket.com). But I thought that doing reciprocal links was being penalized by Google. Does anyone know if link exchange works, and if so, what the best link exchange sites are? Thanks, Dan
