SEO-MOZ bar question on root vs subdomain / canonicalization issues
-
When I look at the SEO-MOZ bar for our site and click next to subdomain (# links from #domains) it shows my main incoming links etc. but when I click on root domain ity shows mydomain/default.asp and 4 incoming links as well as a message that says this url redirects to another url. Does this imply canonicalization issues or is there a 301 redirect to my non /default.asp correcting this issue.
Thanks kindly,
Howard

i assume you are hosted on IIS, you can use iis url-rewite model to fix this.
Match ^/default.asp$ rewrite to /But the main thing here is that you have a link on your site somwhere thet points to default.asp. or the crawler would not of found it.
Best to fix it for good, but if no links point to it, then it will never apear in the address bar, then no one will copy and paste a link to it and you will more then likley nver have a problem

It seems like your hompage is accesable through http://www.mrgrabbar.com/default.asp and http://www.mrgrabbar.com if you want to have both you should use the rel="canonical" href="your root domain" /> for the /default.asp page
If you dont want the /default.asp you could just 301 redirect /defaukt.asp to mrgrabbar.com/

Thanks kindly for your reply
Hi. I was looking at the code for my home page
www.mrgrabbar.com
Do you think I can try to remove the /default.asp to help prevent canonicalization issues? It seems like there is a link to the /default.asp version of my home page high up on this important page. I don't understand if there is some other purpose to having the /default.asp version so I was not sure if I should modify it.
I also looked at the code fro my canonical page and came acroos:
<input type=hidden name="redirectto" value=" default.asp?"=""></input type=hidden name="redirectto" value=">
does this mean that my canonical page is 301 redirecting back out to the non-canonical version (/default.asp)
Thanks,
Howard -
If you are using a CMS like wordpress, joomla, drupal and such often the "frontpage" is another page redirected, that can sometime be an issue. For those times canonical or proper 301 redirect will solve that issue.
There can also be a www. vs. http:// issue. that would be solved with a short code snippet.

A/B testing entire website VS Seo issues
I'm familar with A/B testing variations of a page but I'd like to A/B test a new designs version of a e-commerce site. I´m wondering about the best way to test with SEO concerns... this is what I´ve in mind right now, any suggestion? Use parameters to make version B different from A version. Redirect 50% of the users with 302 ( or javascript would be a better way?) Use noindex in the B pages. Use rel=canonical in the B pages pointing to A version. In the end use 301 redirect to all B pages to A urls. PS: We can´t use subdomain and i don´t wanna use robots.txt file to protect the new design from competitors. I´d love any suggestions and tips about it - thanks folks 🙂

To Subdomain or Not Subdomain?
I have a client that has a construction company that services a regional area. They now developed a PRODUCT that they want to promote that would have a national reach. We are redesigning the site, with new branding and all. How do I treat the website URL structure? Is the product it's own domain because of the target market? Or should I make a subdomain because we want to tie the companies together in some fashion. Every article I read confuses me more on how to handle this. Thoughts?

Linking to AND canonicalizing to a page?
I am using cross domain rel=canonical to a page that is very similar to mine. I feel the page adds value to my site so I want users to go to it, but I ultimately want them to go to the page I'm canonicalizing to. So I am linking to that page as well. Anyone foresee any issues with doing this? And/or have other suggestions? Thanks.

Url canonicalization: www. to http://
Hey there. Sorry for the simple question but I recently redesigned a site and published with WordPress, in the process the domain structure changed from being www. to http:// . My question is does this change affect the value we get from links pointing to the old www. domain structure? The reason I ask is that the old site had a domain authority of 36 with OSE and a couple of hundred links but the new site address shows as having zero domain authority and zero links. Is there some best practise I should be following to retain link value?

Drupal issue
Hi seomozzers again, One of my clients uses DRUPAL(cms) and I have an issue when editing any pages. I access the edit section of the page, try to insert meta description tags, save and view the page source and NO meta description tags appear!! Why is that? Is there a specific setting that I need to implement? Under Meta Tags, apparently DRUPAL likes to put canonical tags by default(unless i can tweek one of the settings), and I would like to remove them. The weird thing is that even there are no canonical tags set, when viewing the page source I can still locate a canonical tag. Is there a setting that allow me to remove the canonical by default? Thank you mozzers:)

How to see a theme ‘/wp-content/themes/’
HI I'm still plugging away at getting to grips with my companies personalized blog. I've been trying for the past two days to upload a theme to my own test Wordpress blog, in order to correct a bug in the companies theme that makes formatting in the Post disappear. The code in the themes CSS file seems to be fine. Anyhow what I assumed would be a simple step has given me hours of hassle. I have finally got to the point of uploading an unzipped version of the theme intot ‘/wp-content/themes/’. Now try as I might my Wordpress admin is completely blind to the fact. Any attempt at using the Upload facility (which is what I attempted many hours ago) fails. There seems to be no place to say, look out there at my directory - a new original theme - unzipped and ready to go. Am I missing something very obvious?

Re-direct issues
Forgive me for the novice question. But I was recently looking at open site explorer and was checking out my site www.visualawards.com , I know we have a re-direct to www.visualawards.com/home.php . After checking both URL's, I found that I have links pointing to both. Is this bad, am I diluting the links? If yes, which one should I point the future ones to, and is there anyway to recover the current links already? Thanks again for your help!!!
