Sub-domain dilema - variations
-
Hi All,
We're creating a sub-domain for a new program launch on a client site and we need to choose the "right" sub-domain name that properly reflects the offering and hopefully keyword driven.
The client is already using the preferred sub-domain name but until we get clarification that we can take it over, I'm doing my due diligence and expecting a worst case scenario in that we cannot use it.
The current preferred sub-domain is only a landing page (not a full site) and it does NOT rank for anything and it's not being built out further.
My question:
Would pluralizing our preferred keyword have any effect in the way SEs see the two sub-domains as they're very closely related?
or
The new sub-domain would be a fully-functional-SEO-friendly site (well that's the plan anyway).
Thanks for all your help.

I'm not debating that folder structure off the root domain is always better but the current situation is that we need to work off a sub-domain.
-
I agree with Yannick that search engines currently seem to be viewing subdomains as separate websites.... and... for that reason... I would place this content in a folder in the root domain rather than on a subdomain.
In early 2010 I redirected two large subdomains to folders in the root and the results have been kickass.

No problem, glad I could help! Good luck!
-
Thanks Yannick. I figured but a little part of me was seeking reassurance and since this is a client's site it's always best getting a second opinion, no matter how trivial.
Cheers!
-
No. Search engines look at the subdomains as two different sites. One letter difference, or one hundred won't make a difference.
Good luck!

Moving Shopify from a Sub Domain to the Full Domain
Apologies if this has been asked before. Currently we have a Shopify shop on a subdomain shop.lucybee.com a blog on subdomain blog.lucybee.com and the full domain of course. We'd now like to move everything onto Shopify on the full domain. Therefore the blog rolls into Shopify. We'll manually move pages into Shopify. Any advice or links to resources on how to manage would be gratefully received. Thank you , Jim

Hyphenating a Domain Name - What would you do?
So I have some chums setting up their own digital outfit. When discussing SEO, naturally domain names came into play. They were looking at 'Gray Digital'. So, initially they jumped to the conclusion that they ought to buy 'graydigital.com' and the .co.uk variant. But a best practice post: http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain - Leads me to think that 'gray-digital.com' may be the better option as far as readability is concerned? Then of course you start thinking - 'should we just make it 'Gray-Digital-Marketing.com' instead?' From your experience, what would you ladies and gents do? Kind regards, John. (EDIT: Having read more around the subject I realise more than one dash is a bad idea. So instead would you bother with the singular hyphen?)

Blog is outranking my root domain - Why and Help
I have an odd question concerning SERP rankings on Google along with PageRank and Google Trust. I have a website created in HTML with a WP blog created in a sub-directory. I am finding that the blog is getting relatively good rankings yet it seems the root domain is not getting any of the rank or trust passed onto it as it consistently is outranked by the blog. In fact, for a few of our targeted keywords the root domain does not even show up at all, yet the blog does. Our blog is #2 in Google SERPs, a top Google Place ranking, a Youtube video in the top 10 and a Google Ad place somewhere in the mix of first page ads. The root domain is nowhere to be found. Is there something I need to correct either on the site, in Google Webmaster or in WP Settings that I am not aware that is pushing all the Google Rank and Trust to the blog instead of the other way around? I considered changing the WP Site URL to the root domain thinking it will pass more SEO mojo to the root. But I don't think this is the way to go. I am kind of at a loss, any help is appreciated.

Redesigning the site with same Domain (IMP.)
technical SEO question - If we take down a site and use the same domain but just redesign the whole site. I guess sometimes in this case Google still keeps indexing old pages though they do not exist now! What the solution for this? Google suggests redirect them to a 404 page but in this case as its same domain- Is it possible that we throw 404 errors and redirect them to 404 page and this 404 page exists in the new site itself (but of course we don't have link our menu to this 404 page) (if that makes sense)? Would appreciate if you can suggest or add anything to above topic.

Change of domain name?
Hello, We are currently developing a new site for an existing online clothing retailer. The existing site is on a .co.uk domain, however we are targeting a global market and wondered whether we could/should launch the new site under a .com address and whether this would be beneficial? Most of our back links come from Affiliate blogs and we could quite easily change these to the new URL. Thanks Bilal

Root domain ranks higher than sub pages
Our website is over 10 years old and has been very successful with google. We rank highly for our keywords, but recently a strange thing has happend. Google has indexed a video from our front page (which no longer exists) and shows this listing instead of the sub pages. This means the listing is irrelevant to the search term. Term is "Junior Cricket Bats"

Checkout on different domain
Is it a bad SEO move to have a your checkout process on a separate domain instead of the main domain for a ecommerce site. There is no real content on the checkout pages and they are completely new pages that are not indexed in the search engines. Do to the backend architecture it is impossibe for us to have them on the same domain. An example is this page: http://www.printingforless.com/2/Brochure-Printing.html One option we've discussed to not pass page rank on to the checkout domain by iFraming all of the links to the checkout domain. We could also move the checkout process to a subdomain instead of a new domain. Please ignore the concerns with visitors security and conversion rate. Thanks!

Buying a new domain
Hello guys! We are in process of buying a new domain. How can we be sure that this domain is not blacklisted and are there any steps to take in order to be sure that whatever we are buying is actually in "good shape"? Thanks much!
