Technical SEO question re: java
-
Hi,
I have an SEO question that came my way, but it's a bit too technical for me to handle. Our entire ecom site is in java, which apparently writes to a page after it has loaded and is not SEO-friendly.
I was presented with a work-around that would basically consist of us pre redering an html page to search engines and leaving the java page for the customer. It sounds like G's definition of "cloaking" to me, but I wanted to know if anyone has any other ideas or work-arounds (if there are any) on how we can make the java based site more SEO-friendly.
Any thoughts/comments you have would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Oooh no thank you - I'm not a big risk-taker when it comes to SEO. he-he. Thanks again for your help!

With the AJAX crawlability guide implementation, Google knows they're requesting a different page than the one being shown to users, so it's not quite the same as cloaking. That being said, you could go black hat and return a completely different page, but Google has their ways of finding these things out.

Hi John, One more question for you if you don't mind... Creating an html snapshot (as noted in the ajax link) is different than a "serving up an html page" as described here http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66355 ? Is that true?

Thought you were talking about "Java". Needless to say JavaScript can cause all sorts of issues with SEO.
-
Hi John,
You're right, I meant JavaScript. Thank you so much for the response. This definitely helps!

Hi, Thanks for the reply. To begin, if you turn off javascript, you can't see any of the content on our pages - not the text, navigation, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to make the content displayable without having to re-do the entire system (which isn't plausible).
Does that make sense? The site is improvementscatalog.com if you want to see it. We're in the process of building content for it, but we just recently switched platforms and these new issues popped up.

I think you mean JavaScript and not Java. What you're suggesting is what Google recommends in their AJAX crawling guide here http://code.google.com/web/ajaxcrawling/. They want you to create a static HTML page to serve to Googlebot instead of your regular page.
Google is getting better at crawling JavaScript content that's loaded asynchronously, so you might want to dedicate your resources elsewhere. On one of my sites, Google is indexing text that's loaded asynchronously (Bing isn't yet), and Matt Cutts has said that Google is crawling some comments that are loaded asynchronously, like Facebook comments (see http://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-indexing-facebook-comments/35594/)

Yeah I agree the work-around sounds like it may be interpreted as black hat cloaking and get you in trouble.
Can you explain further how your application is working and why its not SEO friendly?
Cheers

Plugins and SEO
I'd like some expert guidance. I've searched for a theme that does what I want and finally found something I like, but I'm wondering what you all think I should do to increase it's searchability. The plugin has all the listings and styling. All I need to do is past the code into the wordpress site ad voila! I have a page. Using the widget lets me allow upvotes and provide map etc. But it means the content is inside the widget instead of on the page. What would you modify if you wanted to keep the theme & widget to get the best results. http://best-of-sacramento.com/dentists This is my staging site.

Sitemap Size effect SEO
So I've noticed that the sitemap I use has a capacity of 4500 URLs, but my website is much larger. Is it worth paying for a commercial sitemap that encompasses my entire site? I also notice that of the 4500 URLs which have been submitted, only 104 are indexed. Is this normal, if not, why is the index rate so low?

Moving Blog Question
Site A is my primary site. I created a blog on site B and wrote good content and gave links back to site A. I think this is causing a penalty to occur. I no longer want to update site B and want to move the entire blog and it's content to sitea.com/blog. Is this a good idea or should I just start a fresh/new sitea/blog and just remove the links from site B to site A?

Pager + SEO - Is it possible?
Hi, I am having this issue. I know that pager are not friends with SEO, but I want to know which is the best to do in this situations. for example, I work in a news company, and I have a lot of news pages that are very extensive so I use a pager. Well here I have the problem. suppose that the url is www.mysite.com/news/id/here-comes-the-title When you enter that URL you are viewing the first page that has this meta: title keywords description Now, the problem comes when the user goes to the page 2 of this news article. What I shall do? 1- Change the url to www.mysite.com/news/id/here-comes-the-title-PAGE2 www.mysite.com/news/PAGE2-id/here-comes-the-title www.mysite.com/news/id/PAGE2/here-comes-the-title 2- in the page 2,3,4,5 ... add a meta robot noindex? In the option 2 I think that I am loosing the opportunity to index the body of my article. Is this correct? Thanks

Where to get expert SEO help?
I joined SEOmoz knowing very little about SEO (it turns out even less than I thought!) I signed up because my business website that had be ranking very well for years made a fast and furious fall to the purgatory of page 2, 3, whatever. We'll I've definitely learned a lot and made a several changes that have helped. Specifically link building (directory submissions) and eliminating duplicate content. But we're still far below where we used to be and I've done everything I can do without making a career change to SEO. I've hired a few offshore SEOs to help but they have all failed to live up to their promises. So, I would love to find a GOOD SEO that can 1. Fix the remaining on-page technical issues in our CMS website (Business Catalyst), and 2. help us develop an SEO strategy for the next year. (I prefer not to post the name of the website for competitive reasons) Our keywords are really not very competitive at all due to the uniqueness of the business. Where should I look for help? Thanks

SEO Friendly Calendar System
Does anyone have a recommendation for a calendar system that is SEO friendly? I have been using Helios Calendar but the current version lacks proper SEO bones (canonical URLs, mini calendar generates links to empty events from 1950 to 2020, 302 re-directs, and it is generating thousands of crawl errors in Google Webmaster Tools. The developer has plans to implement some fixes, and I would rather not rip apart what is currently there to fix core issues. I have found that calendars in general are a nightmare. If anyone has any suggestions, or has experience in tidying up Helios I would be interested. Thanks, Dan
