Site #2 beats site #1 in every aspect?
-
Hey guys, loving SEOMoz so far and will definitely continue my subscription after the free trial.
I have a question however, which I am really confused about.
When researching my primary keyword, I have found that the second ranked site beats the top site in every single aspect, apart from domain age, which is almost 6 years for the top one and 6 months for the second.
When I say every single aspect, I mean everything. More authority for the page and domain, more links, more anchor text links, more authoritive links, more social signals, more relevant links, better domain (although second ranked site is a .net), better MozRank, better MozTrust etc....
I have noticed though, that in the UK SERPs, those sites are switched, so #2 is actually #1.
Could it be that the US SERPs just haven't updated yet, or am I missing something completely different.

When you're looking at 200+ ranking factor, there's a lot we can't account for even across all of our metrics. A few possibilities:
(1) The #2 site's links are being devalued, for some reason, due to quality issues.
(2) There are geo-targeting signals out of whack or focused outside of the US market. If the site is ranking #1 on Google.co.uk and has a clear UK connection, that could lower it's value on Google.com slightly. It's not the kiss of death, but it can make a difference.
(3) The #1 (currently on Google.com) site has recent activity that we're not aware of yet (link-building, especially).
(4) As Joshua said, #1 could be targeting inbound anchor text better.
(5) As Brandon said, #1 may have an advantage on user signals.
I don't think that Google currently "sandboxes" new sites in they way they may have once. What I think we're seeing is a grace period where new sites get a chance to rank while Google evaluates their link profile. If, after a couple of months, those links look spammy, the site may drop. In most cases I've seen, though, that's not a #1 vs. #2 sort of thing.

I think if you take both Brandon and Joshua you will likely have your answer. Brandon went where I went when I first saw the question. Are you giving the searcher the info they are looking for in a way that makes them want to keep reading? When I read Joshua's response I had to say he, too, was correct.
There have been many times when I kept telling myself how we were beating a competitor and caused myself to miss the flaws in our site. So, Forget who is first and whether or not they are dating Larry Page, focus on getting your page to perfect or flawless. Even if the page is about Chinese Gambling Sex Herbs, put in an info graph and list the top three myths about Gambling Sex Herbs. Then make sure you have spot on Title Tags, H1-H2, alt text, great linking program, quality backlinks, etc.
As to domain age, there is the place where that will have an effect...for a very short time frame. If a new domain comes out with great content, gets lots of traffic, social, and back links, domain age will not over weigh the other factors for ranking. -
More relevant links is an interesting concept and probably where the problem lies. Which links are Google counting and what is the anchor text? and does the link profile look natural?
In my experience, not ranking for a certain keyword usually comes down to needing more links with a mixture of exact and partial match anchor text from a variety of sources. Try investing in some better web directories like BOTW, get a couple of blogs to write about you and release a PRweb press release with sufficient linking.
Internally you may also want to write a few more articles on that specific keyword and link them all through to the central page, thus funneling relevant link juice internally as well as externally.
Let me know how you go

Sorry that I forgot to mention this.
Both sites have A grade according to Moz.
Both sites are 1 page sites, no inner pages apart from the About and Contact obviously, however the #1 site uses adsense whilst #2 does not.
Maybe the bounce rate of these sites also play an important factor, but I would consider both of them, to be quite poor.
-
@darrenspeed, when you listed the factors where #2 dominates #1, you didn't mention anything about on-page content. Consider this scenario:
Google actually jumps the current #2 to the #1 spot, but Google also notices that well over half the people that visit the site go back to Google within 20 seconds and perform the exact same search. This would signal to Google that the page's content doesn't fully satisfy its users. So it goes back to putting the other page on top, and notices that only 25% of the visitors go back and perform another search for the same keyword. Therefore Google waves it's magic wand and says, "yea, verily I declare #1 to be better than #2."
Other than the domain age, it is the only other plausible explanation I can come up with. Compare the content of both pages and get back to us. I'll be interested to see if it is a domain age issue, content issue, or possibly something else.
-
Wow, thanks for the quick reply.
I did think about the domain, but couldn't believe that the domain age alone would make it rank stronger, because the #2 site has a tons more of everything.
Luckily I just bought a 2 year old domain to compete for this keyword, although I hear that the domain age is weakened when it exchanges hands.
Thanks again.
-
It is definately due to the young domain. The younger one has just quit the sandbox period and going upwards while the older one has yet gained trust in google's eyes so google will have it's time to collect user data to be sure that it is better from a user aspect to switch those rankings.
If a better site could beat another one in the moment of becoming better I would be very happy, I wouldn't have to wait so much to harvest the fruits of my efforts.

Site Has Not Recovered (Still!) from Penguin
Hello, I have a site that just keeps getting hit with a ton of bad, unnatural backlinks due to the sins from previous SEO companies they've hired. About every quarter, I have to add more bad links to their disavow file... still. Is it time to move them to a new domain? Perhaps a .net? If so, do we just completely trash the old domain & not redirect it? I've never had a client like this in the past but they still want to maintain their branded name. Thanks for your feedback!

3 Wordpress sites 1 Tumblr site coming under 1domain(4subdomains) WPMU: Proper Redirect?
Hey Guys, witnessSF.org (WP), witnessLA.org(Tumblr), witnessTO.com(WP), witnessHK.com(WP), and witnessSEOUL.com(new site no redirects needed) are being moved over to sf.ourwitness.com, la.ourwitness.com and so forth. All under on large Wordpress MU instance. Some have hundreds of articles/links others a bit less. What is the best method to take, I understand there are easy redirects, and the complete fully manual one link at a time approach. Even the WP to WP the permalinks are changing from domain.com/date/post-name to domain.com/post-name? Here are some options: Just redirect all previous witinessla.org/* to la.ourwitness.org/ (automatic direct all pages to home page deal) (easiest not the best)2) Download Google Analytics top redirected domains about 50 urls have significant ranking and traffic (in LA's sample) and just redirect those to custom links. (most bang for the buck for the articles that rank manually set up to the correct place) 3) Best of the both worlds may be possible? Automated perhaps?I prefer working with .htaccess vs a redirect plugin for speed issues. Please advise. Thanks guys!

Large Site - Complete Site URL Change and How to Preserver Organic Rankings/Traffic
Hello Community, What is your experience with site redesign when it comes to preserving the traffic? If a large enterprise website has to go through a site-wide enhancement (resulting in change of all URLs and partial content), what do you expect from Organic rankings and traffic? I assume we will experience a period that Google needs to "re-orientate" itself with the new site, if so, do you have similar experience and tips on how to minimize the traffic loss? Thanks

Site Structured Navigated by Cookies
Is it advisable to have a site structure that is navigated via URLs rather than cookies? In a website that has several location based pages - each with their own functions and information? Is this a SEO priority? Will it help to combat duplicate content? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). So What On My Site Is Breaking The Google Guidelines?
I have a site that I'm trying to rank for the Keyword "Jigsaw Puzzles" I was originally ranked around #60 or something around there and then all of a sudden my site stopped ranking for that keyword. (My other keyword rankings stayed) Contacted Google via the site reconsideration and got the general response... So I went through and deleted as many links as I could find that I thought Google may not have liked... heck, I even removed links that I don't think I should have JUST so I could have this fixed. I responded with a list of all links I removed and also any links that I've tried to remove, but couldn't for whatever reasons. They are STILL saying my website is breaking the Google guidelines... mainly around links. Can anyone take a peek at my site and see if there's anything on the site that may be breaking the guidelines? (because I can't) Website in question: http://www.yourjigsawpuzzles.co.uk UPDATE: Just to let everyone know that after multiple reconsideration requests, this penalty has been removed. They stated it was a manual penalty. I tried removing numerous different types of links but they kept saying no, it's still breaking rules. It wasn't until I removed some website directory links that they removed this manual penalty. Thought it would be interesting for some of you guys.

Optimize a Classifieds Site
Hi, I have a classifieds website and would like to optimize it. The issues/questions I have: A Classifieds site has, say, 500 cities. Is it better to create separate subdomains for each city (http://city_name.site.com) or subdirectory (http://site.com/city_name)? Now in each city, there will be say 50 categories. Now these 50 categories are common across all the cities. Hence, the layout and content will be the same with difference of latest ads from each city and name of the city and the urls pointing to each category in the relevant city. The site architecture of a classifieds site is highly prone to have major content which is not really a duplicate content. What is the best way to deal with this situation? I have been hit by Panda in April 2011 with traffic going down 50%. However, the traffic since then has been around same level. How to best handle the duplicate content penalty in case with site like a classifieds site. Cheers!
