404 handling the right way
-
Hi,
Currently when a page is not found I make a 301 redirect to a 404 page
should I really do a redirect or maybe a rewrite of the 404 page without redirection?
Thanks,
Asaf

I am not sure, as many sites do the redirect then the 404, I asume that search engines handle it ok, but I think it better to be safe. I like things to be done properly at my end i dont like to rely on others to fix the problem.
by the way I use
Server.TransferRequest("/seo-perth/error404")reather than just Server.Transfer it is a bit more correct

Thanks for the answer,
I'm using .net so I'll change the redirect to Server.Transfer, I think it looks better.
Do you think there is any difference from SEO perspective between the two methods ?

This is somthing i wondered about myself, i wanted a user frendly 404 page and I wanted to return a 404 without a redirect. Getting both was a problem.
I use .net, how i achived this was making my 404 page return a 404, and used server.transfer("/folder/my404Page")
Not sure what technology you are using but for .net that will work fine.

Google Search Console Showing 404 errors for product pages not in sitemap?
We have some products with url changes over the past several months. Google is showing these as having 404 errors even though they are not in sitemap (sitemap shows the correct NEW url). Is this expected? Will these errors eventually go away/stop being monitored by Google?

Which way round to 301 redirect?
Hi We have just added a new layered navigation menu to our website. so for example we had Before : www.tidy-books.co.uk/chidlrens-bookcases (this has the seo juice) And Now: http://www.tidy-books.co.uk/childrens-bookcases-book-storage/childrens-bookcases Might be a stupid question but do I redirect the 'now' url to the 'before' url or the the other way round I look forward to hearing your thoughts Thanks

What is the best way to refresh a webpage of a news site, SEO wise?
Hello all, we have a client which is a sports website. In fact it is a veyr big website and has a huge number of news per day. This is mostly the reason why it refreshes some of its pages with news list every 420 seconds. We currently use meta refresh. I have read here and elsewhere that meta refreshes should be avoided. But we don't do it to send to another page and pass any kind of page authority / juice. Is in this case javascript refresh better? Is there any other better way. What do you think & suggest? Thank you!

Should I worry about these 404's?
Just wondering what the thought was on this. We have a site that lets people generate user profiles and once they delete the profile the page then 404's. I was told there is nothing we can do about those from our developers, but I was wondering if I should worry about these...I don't think they will affect any of our rankings, but you never know so I thought I would ask. Thanks
