Duplicate content & canonicals
-
Hi,
Working on a website for a company that works in different european countries.
The setup is like this:
www.website.eu/nl
www.website.eu/be
www.website.eu/fr
...You see that every country has it's own subdir, but NL & BE share the same language, dutch...
The copywriter wrote some unique content for NL and for BE, but it isn't possible to write unique for every product detail page because it's pretty technical stuff that goes into those pages.
Now we want to add canonical tags to those identical product pages. Do we point the canonical on the /be products to /nl products or visa versa?
Other question regarding SEOmoz: If we add canonical tags to x-pages, do they still appear in the Crawl Errors "duplicate page content", or do we have to do our own math and just do "duplicate page content" minus "Rel canonical" ?

Hey Joris,
As of now it will most likely see it as duplicate content, because technically it still is duplicate content to a crawler bot, they won't know your intentions or target audience for each subfolder. The only way you could get around our crawler seeing it as duplicate is by blocking rogerbot with robots.txt or meta robots from that subfolder. Then there is putting up relconanoicals, which is the best way.
Hope this sheds some light on the duplicate content issues.
Best,
Nick

Thanks Robert!

Will do!

Now, that was a good question. Why not send a quick email to help@SEOmoz.org and just ask if there is a way to circumvent? LMK please.

Hi Robert,
Thx for your quick answer, I will make sure that in Google Webmaster Tools we say that the /be is for Belgium and the /nl for The Netherlands, but the duplicate content will still show up in our reports in SEOmoz, no?

First question is: Have you thought of using the .cc instead of the sub directory? Rand speaks to the .fr issue in his WBF mentioned by iBiz Leverage.
As to canonical to avoid duplicate content, you shouldn't have a duplicate content issue even with the two languages so long as you set your country target for each. But, read or watch the WBF by Rand as it is full of info on this subject and domain auth, etc.

Here is also another link from SEOmoz; i think this is most helpful: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday
Hope this can help.

How to deal with auto generated pages on our site that are considered thin content
Hi there, Wondering how to deal w/ about 300+ pages on our site that are autogenerated & considered thin content. Here is an example of those pages: https://app.cobalt.io/ninp0 The pages are auto generated when a new security researcher joins our team & then filled by each researcher with specifics about their personal experience. Additionally, there is a fair amount of dynamic content on these pages that updates with certain activities. These pages are also getting marked as not having a canonical tag on them, however, they are technically different pages just w/ very similar elements. I'm not sure I would want to put a canonical tag on them as some of them have a decent page authority & I think could be contributing to our overall SEO health. Any ideas on how I should deal w/ this group of similar but not identical pages?

I have a duplicate content on my Moz crawler, but google hasn't indexed those pages: do I still need to get rid of the tags?
I received an urgent error from the Moz crawler that I have duplicate content on my site due to the tags I have. For example: http://www.1forjustice.com/graves-amendment/ The real article found here: http://www.1forjustice.com/car-accident-rental-car/ I didn't think this was a big deal, because when I looked at my GWT these pages weren't indexed (picture attached). Question: should I bother fixing this from an SEO perspective? If Google isn't indexing the pages, then am I losing link juice? 6c2kxiZ

2 canonical links on 1 page, 1 for print version
Our developer has added a 2nd canonoical link for the "print" version of our page. I read on another post that this appears to be not be the correct way to do this. Is there a better way ? Here is an example of the code:

Duplicate content in SEOMOZ report
Hi guys, The SEOMOZ report shows there is duplicate content on my Magento ecommerce: footdistrict.com Example: http://footdistrict.com/nike-air-royalty-386169602.html?___store=footdistrict_en Duplicate content shown on the report: http://footdistrict.com/marcas/puma.html?___store=footdistrict_en

http://footdistrict.com/new-balance-gm500mbn.html?___store=footdistrict_en
http://footdistrict.com/new-balance-m400nnb.html?___store=footdistrict_en My guess is that this is due to the fixed footer that we have set where modal windows pop up with delivery info and so on. As such, all the content within it is repeated through all the pages What do you recommend me to remove this duplicate content? I have read about duplicate content issues but they don't usually deal with div tag duplicate issues, modal windows and so on. Thanks Regards0 -
How can I prevent errors of duplicate page content generated by my tags from my wordpress on-site blog platform?
When I add meta data and a canonical reference to my blog tags for my on-site blog which works using a wordpress.org template, Roger generates errors of duplicate content. How can I avoid this problem? I want to use up to 5 tags per post, with the same canonical reference and each campaign scan generates errors/warnings for me!

Why do pages with canonical urls show in my report as a "Duplicate Page Title"?
eg: Page One
Moz Pro | | DPSSeomonkey
<title>Page one</title>
No canonical url Page Two
<title>Page one</title> Page two is counted as being a page with a duplicate page title.
Shouldn't it be excluded?0
