Duplicate Homepage In Google
-
Hi
Just found through my SEO dashboard, Google has two versions of the same homepage, the root page, plus the index.html page, causing duplicate content from both the pages.
what is the best option to ensure google only have 1 version of the homepage listed?
-
I'm not a big fan of doubling-up on canonicalization tactics, because there's no good way to tell what's working. The 301 is probably a tiny bit stronger (not much, in my experience), but the advantage of the canonical tag on the home-page is that one tag will sweep up any variants. If you 301 "index.html" to the root, and then someone comes along and uses the non-www version of your home-page or adds a tracking parameter ("index.html?track=1234"), etc., the 301 won't do anything - you'll have to create 301s for each situation. The canonical will prevent those problems, which are very common on home pages.

Correct - usually, it's all the same physical page (on the server), so you only need to put it in one place.

Hi
just found I have same issues on my own website. However bit confused how I would change this. When the website was developed they where php pages, we did a rewrite so these pages went to .html pages instead, see file below. However now with my website www.rfksolutions.co.uk and www.rfksolutions.co.uk/index.html seem to be duplicate?
see my current htaccess file
any ideas?

I am confused on when to use both 301 and rel=canonical at the same time and when to use each separately. I have received advice through other Q&As saying to use both for my homepage in this exact same scenario, but sometimes SEOs advise to use rel=canonical on every page to point to its same location.
If 301s pass along "most" of the link juice, then why use both? What's the disadvantage of just using a 301?

Good job, 301's are usually the reliable & trusted solution. Canonical tags are really useful for other redirecting purposes such as similar content issues. All the best
-
Hi
thanks for that, it was a 301 i was thinking about, that is what I would normally have done, if for instance an old page had some link juice I would 301 it to another page, but I hadnt done one for this reason
I have just setup a 301 now for the domain name
-
Hi There
There are a couple of options;
-
301 Redirect the index.html page to your root domain, e.g. http://example.com/index.html 301 redirected to http://example.com
-
Use a Canonical tag, pointing the index.html page to your root domain.
You'll find a really helpful Redirection Guide here on SEOmoz.
You can also find here on SEOmoz a useful guide to Canonical tags.
I'd almost always recommend for this particular scenario, opting for a 301 Redirect on the page index.html to your root domain. Chances are (for these two pages) your inbound links will tend to mainly point to your root domain rather than the index.html page.
I hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

thanks for your help, sorry just to confirm
if I wanted google to keep the www.mydomain.com instead of www.mydomain.com/index.html as the main homepage I would put the link rel= onto the index/html and put the www.mydomain.com in there?

Adding the canonical tag within your telling search engines which homepage to use - this seemed to work for us:
If you're having duplicate content throughout your site, I've read having your site admin do something with the htaccess file would do the trick.

Duplicate Page Content Issue
Hello, I recently solved www / no www duplicate issue for my website, but now I am in trouble with duplicate content again. This time something that I cannot understand happens: In Crawl Issues Report, I received Duplicate Page Content for http://yourappliancerepairla.com (DA 19) http://yourappliancerepairla.com/index.html (DA 1) Could you please help me figure out what is happenning here? By default, index.html is being loaded, but this is the only index.html I have in the folder. And it looks like the crawler sees two different pages with different DA... What should I do to handle this issue?

Homepage Not Ranking in Google - How long do old (not current) bad SEO practices exert influence?
I'm trying to get to the bottom of a problem I have with the Google ranking for mauiactivities.com - it's far below what I would hope for. My research so far has uncovered the following, and any advice on where to go from here would be appreciated. _Edit:_No problems with Bing or Yahoo - the site is #1 for primary key word 'maui activities' 1. Running a site:http://www.mauiactivities.com search in Google reveals that the homepage doesn't rank. At all. I looked through the 17 pages of results and can't spot it. Edit: I have now, after fresh checks after submitting the homepage through Search Console, found it at #1 - still, the following applies ... 2. I've found that the domain (before it was purchased by my client in 2011) had some bad inbound links, specifically from scubamaui.com (no longer active). The links where white, on a white background. This web archive snapshot will reveal all. 3. Those bad links were 'cleaned up' (i.e. they don't show in the web archive) from 2014, and as mentioned above, the website is now 'down'. 4. Search Console doesn't have a manual penalty. 5. When I search for 'tropical divers maui' in Google I find www.mauiactivities.com is the 4th result. To me, this indicates a current relationship with the dead site (Tropical Divers Maui). No other term comes close to ranking to high for the homepage. So, to summarise - can the old, dead Tropical Divers Maui website still be affecting the Google ranking, and what would you suggest I do next?

Duplicate content
Hello mozzers, I have an unusual question. I've created a page that I am fully aware that it is near 100% duplicate content. It quotes the law, so it's not changeable. The page is very linkable in my niche. Is there a way I can build quality links to it that benefit my overall websites DA (i'm not bothered about the linkable page being ranked) without risking panda/dupe content issues? Thanks, Peter

Web Page Dropped Out of Google?
One of our web pages seems to have completely dropped out of Google after featuring on page 1 for a number of years. It can't be a site wide issue as all other web pages are performing as normal. The page is http://www.contractormoney.com/income-protection/ and the key phrase it was performing well for was 'contractor income protection'. Any ideas??

Will google let me do this
Hi i am working on my site at the moment www.in2town.co.uk and i am adding new sections and was thinking about buying domain names that best describe that section and which people would remember. so for example i am looking at adding a tenerife magazine to my site and would like to know if it would be wise to buy a domain name for example tenerife magazine and then have it directed to the section of my site. would this benefit my site in any way and would google allow this. instead of having in2town.co.uk and then tenerife magazine after it, sorry cannot find the slash as i am on a spanish keyborad at the moment, i would like to have something like tenerifemagazine.co..uk etc If anyone can give me advice on this then that would be great. also can anyone let me know if this is a wise idea or not, to have sub domain names on my main site. i would like to know if i had tenerifemagazine under the in2town domain name would it slow the site down or should i consider building a brand new site just for that and then making people aware that it comes under the in2town umbrella many thanks
