This Rookie needs help! Duplicate content pages dropped significantly.
-
So I am pretty new to SEO Moz. I have an e-commerce site and recently did a website redesign. However, not without several mistakes and issues. That said, when SEO Moz did a crawl of my site, the results showed A LOT of Duplicate Content Pages on my site due to my having one item in many variations. It was almost over whelming and because the number of pages was so high, I have been trying to research ways to correct it quickly. The latest crawl from yesterday shows a drastic drop in the number of duplicate content pages and a slight increase in pages with too long page titles (which is fixable). I am embarrassed to give the number of duplicate pages that were showing but, just know, it's been reduced to a third of the amount.
I am just wondering if I missed something and should I be happy or concerned? Has there been a change that could have caused this? Thanks for helping this rookie out!

OH BOY! You're going to have to let me read through this a time or two and get back to you! I think I get it but I need to digest a bit of this canonical stuff that I keep avoiding.
Thank you so much. I'll get back.

I would strongly consider using the rel=canonical tags on your pages. If you have 1 main product 20 variations in color and 3 different image prints as well then here is what I would do.
Find the most popular of the 20 variations in color and utilize the rel=canonical for the 19 other pages to point back to that most popular page. Dont worry about changing copy or anything drastically for this.
Now lets assume that the three different images are a disney print chair, a LOTR print chair and a Pixar Print Chair. You believe that people might actually be searching for these 3 products in a different way than your other 20. You should then try to create unique content for all 3 of these pages that differ from not only the other 20 color variations but also each of the other image print chairs. To make sure it is different I would not scrape any content from the other pages and re-purpose it but rather write 3 new descriptions and pages, Header Tags, Title Tags, Alt Tags, etc...
Now a best practice would still be to utilize a rel=canonical tag on all of your pages so that tracking parameters and the such do not end up getting linked to and you end up splitting your authority among different pages in the SERP. For a good source on rel=canonical I would look here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps
Hope this helps and isn't too confusing. -
No problem, good luck with your website

I do not need to necessarily rank for every fabric. There are a few such as Disney characters or sports teams that I do need to rank for. My previous site had all the chairs on one page with a drop down and it just was not as "simple" to shop the item and it made specific tracking and "book keeping" a little more difficult. I like to have zoomed and multiple views for each chair when possible. I find this reduces the number of returns and customer inquiries when the customer can really see each product.
So, giving each product it's own page is for two reasons - the customer's shopping experience and for my tracking purposes.
As for the meta tags- I think your quote above is possibly one issue. The programming on my site automatically generates the meta tag based upon my product description.
By the way, Thank you for your time and expertise.
-
Do you need to rank on every fabric name for your product ? If not, you could just put one product page and have the fabric choice in a dropdown menu.
And for the meta description, allow me to quote SEOmoz Beginners guide to SEO : "Note that the meta description tag does NOT get used by the engines for rankings, but rather helps to attract clicks by searchers from the results page (as it is the "snippet" of text used by the search engines)".
-
Thank you Aeronet. I think most of my issues are within the description. Example: I may have a kids recliner in 50 different fabric choices. So the url, title, meta tag, and product name are all unique. However, the description is practically the same for each chair. You have given me a couple things to look into though such as the written/unwritten url. New to me but I will look into it as well as double check some other things.
When my newly designed site was released, I was unaware that the new program would generate a URL for each page based upon my product ID and not the established URL that I assigned it. Therefore all of my previous, 5 yr old and hard worked, URL's vanished. I did not discover this for 25 days and had to do a 301 redirect on a large chunk of my site. It's been quite a mess.
The number of duplicate content pages have been overwhelming, but I was just shocked to see the number suddenly drop to a 3rd of what it was yesterday. Still not sure what has happened to cause this.

If you use only one item in many variations (and want to keep your website that way), you must find ways to make each page as unique as possible.
You should look at :
- The url.
- The title.
- The meta description.
- The product name and description.
- The product image name and alt attribute.
- The breadcrumb trail.
And try to customize them to make each product page unique.
Also check if a page is reachable with differents urls, if your product is reachable by its rewritten and non rewritten url, that could cause the duplicated pages problem on your website.
(For example, www.yourwebsite.com/product.php?id=02 and www.yourwebsite.com/shiny-rewritten-product-url)
If that's the case, use rel=canonical or 301 redirect to your rewritten URLs, make a sitemap with the latest ones and your duplicate pages number should go down.

Should I set blog category/tag pages as "noindex"? If so, how do I prevent "meta noindex" Moz crawl errors for those pages?
From what I can tell, SEO experts recommend setting blog category and tag pages (ie. "http://site.com/blog/tag/some-product") as "noindex, follow" in order to keep the page quality of indexable pages high. However, I just received a slew of critical crawl warnings from Moz for having these pages set to "noindex." Should the pages be indexed? If not, why am I receiving critical crawl warnings from Moz and how do I prevent this?

Help needed on what to do with deleti
Hi, i need some help as i am lost on what exactly the best to do. My website http://goo.gl/KxN8X6 I want to delete my community http://goo.gl/SbY39r which is giving me a nightmare when it comes to seo friendly. The /community has too many errors with seo and I think is harming the site growth. Now I want to delete it but if i delete it I am going to get a lot of 404 errors. So I was thinking to first add a Noindex and nofollow to it and in a month delete it. Could you please let me know if this is a good strategy? or if you can suggest something better. I really don't want the community. Thank you for your help.

Keyword stuffing on a shop Brand Collection Pages - would schema.org Microdata helps?
I'm setting up a Shop for a customer and have few questions about Brand Collection Pages in General. I create collection pages for the main Vendors & Designers and since I add their Brand Names on their products I have more than 40 times the Brand name on one Collection Page. When I run Moz On-Page Optimization I get a „B“ classification since Keyword stuffing for the Brand name. I put the Product Informations (brand-name, product-name, product-price) into Schema.org - Microdata and I‘m just curious what is the best practice. Don‘t using the Brand name when using Brand collection pages, using Microdata only on the product page since there starts the conversion, using Micordata whenever it is possible, doesn't matter since the overall sense of a Collection Pages is to have a lot duplicated Brand names per Page. I honestly have no idea but I just believe that Google or other search engines would appreciate if I categorize it as a Product including Brand-name and price. The other Point is, on the Collection Page I just show the Product Details when the User hover over the Image. As far as I understand, Microdata should be visible. Just showing something when hovering over an Image is that visible or not ? Or in other words, does it makes sense to use Microdata in this case? I just guess Yes since it is not totally hidden. This particular Band Name in my case is „L‘Agent“. For whatever reason Moz don‘t understand the apostrophe in L‘Agent and I get the recommendation to use the exact Keyword in the Title, what I already doing. Is there any trick or work-around on apostrophes? Here is the collection Page http://petit-paris.me/collections/l-agent-by-agent-provocateur Thanks Siggi

How do I find out which pages are being indexed on my site and which are not?
Hi, I doing my first technical audit on my site. I am learning how to do an audit as i go and am a lost. I know some page won't be indexed but how do I: 1. Check the site for all pages, both indexed and not indexed 2. Run a report to show indexed pages only (i am presuming i can do this via screaming Frog or webmaster tool) 3. I can do a comparison between the two list and work out which pages are not being indexed. I'll then need to figure out way. I'll cross this bridge once i get to it Thanks Ben

Duplicate Content
Crawl Diagnostics is returning duplicate content/title tags for every product image on listing pages of my classified site because each image is on a separate url. So this page, for example, http://marketplace.myclassicgarage.com/cars/all/Chevrolet-Bel-Air/24481/ has, among other things, the same title tag as all this page, http://marketplace.myclassicgarage.com/cars/all/Chevrolet-Bel-Air/24481/media/151968 which is one of many different images that are all child pages in the folder /media In this particular case there are over 140 pages with the same title tag because there are over 140 images for this particular car. That is just one listing and there are over 1,000 listings (vehicles) and that number will grow. Is this really a problem? With limited resources, what real positive effect will making all these images have unique title tags really have from a SERP perspective? Keep in mind this being user generated content, there is no way to descriptively update the title tags to something like <title>Bel Air Passenger Side Profile</title>. That is not feasible.

Duplicate Content Issue because of root domain and index.html
SEOMoz crawl diagnostics is suggesting that my root domain and the rootdomain/index.html are duplicate content. What can be done to ensure that both are considered as a single age only?

Current on-page best practices
Given all the recent talk about over optimization, when was the last time SEOMoz updated the on-page report card tool? Rand wrote an excellent piece on Perfect On-Page Optimization (which is great, and thanks) in summer 2009. Is that still best practice 3 years later (and post-Penguin/Panda)? If not, has the SEOMoz on-page report card tool been updated to reflect current thinking for on-page best-practices? I know the higher level concept is "write for humans, not for bots" but if you can do both (and not create an unreadable seo-frankenpage) then why not? Does getting an "A" grade wreak of over optimization now? Should I use the key phrase at the start of the title, h1, and strong (or bold) elements on a page? Should have an image with file name and alt text equal to (or containing at the start) the key phrase?

Duplicate Content being caused by home page?
Hello everyone, I am new to SEOmoz and SEO in general and I have a quick questions. When running a SEO Web Crawler report on my URL, I noticed in the report that my home page (also known as my index page) was listed twice. Here is what the report was showing: www.example.com/ www.example.com/index.php So are these 2 different urls? If so, is this considered duplicate content and should I block crawler access to the index.php? Thanks in advance for the help!
