Mod Rewrite question to prevent duplicate content
-
Hi,
I'm having problems with a mod rewrite issue and duplicate content
On my website I have
Both #1 and #2 are the same page (I can't change this). #3 is different pages.
How can I use mod rewrite to to make #2 redirect to #1 so I don't have duplicate content WHILE #3 still works?

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert on rewriterule.
Would it be: RewriteRule ^/directory$ / http://www.website.com [R=301,L]
-
Hi again,
I think the line of code below will create the 301 Redirect that you need:
RewriteRule ^/dir$ / [R=301,L]
Let me know if you come across any more problems with it.
Hope that helps,
Sha

Hi kat2,
Hmmm...clearly, I should have slept before answering this , as I completely overlooked the fact that your second URL is actually a directory, so please ignore the first part of my original response (now removed), which would only work if you have a specific file to edit.
Now to mod rewrite. I'm getting a sense that something else might be in play here, as your question suggests you have already tried to create a redirect and had problems.
A couple of questions we need answered in order to get this answer right for you:
-
Is your site built on a CMS such as Joomla? Some CMS use their own redirect rules to rewrite URL's and these will overwrite the rules you write in .htaccess
-
Are you using a 301 Redirect rule, or just URL rewriting?
- To create a 301 Redirect, your rewrite rule must end with [R=301] or [R=301,L] if it is the last.
If you can answer these questions we will be better able to help sort the problem for you.
Hope that helps,
Sha

Internal duplicated content on articles, when is too much?
I have an automotive rental blog with articles that explain the pros of renting a specific model. So in this articles the advantages of rental versus the buying of a new model. This advantages are a list with bullets like this:
Technical SEO | | markovald
Rental | Buy new car
Rental:
Free car insurance
Free assistance
etc.
Buy new car
You have to pay insurance
You have to pay assistance
etc. etc. I want to do this because i want to make all articles like landing pages...
This "advantages box" have 100 characters. The general length of articles on my blog is 500/600 characters. So i have an average of 15/20% internal duplicated content on all my articles. Is this bad for seo? Any alternatives?0 -
Finding a specific link - Duplicating my own content
Hi Mozzers, This may be a bit of a n00b question and i feel i should know the answer but alas, here i am asking. I have a page www.website.co.uk/page/ and im getting a duplicate page report of www.website.co.uk/Page/ i know this is because somewhere on my website a link will exists using the capitalised version. I have tried everything i can think of to find it but with no luck, any little tricks? I could always rewrite the urls to lowercase, but I have downloadable software etc also on the website that i dont want to take the capitals out of. So the best solution seems to be finding the link and remove it. Most link checkers I use treat the capitalised and non capitalised as the same thing so really arent helping lol.

Shopify duplicate content issue
We recently moved out site to shopify but now have a duplicate content issue as we have the same products in different collections. I have added canonical code to get rid of this but my webmaster tools still shows hundreds of duplicate pages. How can I tell if the code I added is working? How long will it take for google to recognise this and drop the duplicates from their index and is this likely to have a significant impact on SERPS? Our we page is www.devoted2vintage.co.uk. Thanks Paul

Duplicate Content based on www.www
In trying to knock down the most common errors on our site, we've noticed we do have an issue with dupicate content; however, most of the duplicate content errors are due to our site being indexed with www.www and not just www. I am perplexed as to how this is happening. Searching through IIS, I see nothing that would be causing this, and we have no hostname records setup that are www.www. Does anyone know of any other things that may cause this and how we can go about remedying it?

Duplicate Content Issue with
Hello fellow Moz'rs! I'll get straight to the point here - The issue, which is shown in the attached image, is that for every URL ending in /blog/category/name, it has a duplicate page of /blog/category/name/?p=contactus. Also, its worth nothing that the ?p=contact us are not in the SERPs but were crawled by SEOMoz and they are live and duplicate. We are using Pinnacle cart. Is there a way to just stop the crawlers from ?p=contactus or? Thank you all and happy rankings, James
