Seomoz on-page analysis, how strict to be
-
Hello,
In a competitive niche, how important is it to be strict with the seomoz on-page analysis? If it gives a page/keyword an A, am I good to go?
Or do I need to be more strict in that. We've had some competition move above us and we want to make sure we're on-site optimized well.

Thanks.

Good responses all around. Nothing in SEO is guaranteed. Anyone guaranteeing you anything in SEO is lying or trying to sell you something. SEOmoz metrics are a measurement of best practices. You will do well to follow these but getting straight A's will guarantee you nothing. In extremely competitive niches, it is important to max out in all categories including on-page and all off page methods. In such a niche quantity AND quality must work in concert to get any kind of results and EVEN THEN, it is a gamble.

I thumbed up a lot of answers here, so will just add my 2 cents.
Tools like the On-Page optimization are very good, especially when you are a beginner-intermediate SEO, but by themselves won't earn top rankings.
Consider that most ranking factors happen off the page, including the multitude of ranking signals that come from inbound links.
We all have "F" pages that rank #1 for high-volume terms, and "As" that don't even rank in the top 50. Are On-page grading tools important? Absolutely. They can uncover serious problems, educate us, and open our eyes to our on-page structure.
However, the "perfectly" optimized page is a bit more nuanced. I highly recommend this WBF by Rand.
Best of Luck with your SEO!

EGOL and Valery, I am very impressed by both of your answers. I will work on getting good enough that I don't need the on-page analysis tool, but for now I will use it and look for ways I can go beyond what the tool suggests.
Thanks again, great posts!

oh... OK
I was only 1/2 way through reading your post and I am thinking... "This is the best stuff I've read in a year."
Looking forward to more of your posts.

I thumbed myself since I felt I didn't really answer the question, e.g. gave him a concrete plan of action.

I really REALLY like Valery's answer. (Who gave that a thumbs down? I hope that you are my competitor
Lots of people here seem to worship SEO tools.
I think that you gotta be careful.
Becoming a slave to SEO tools will dull your wit and damage your ability to think out of the box. It also resigns you to a position where you hand over your most important money-making decisions to "somebody out there" who produced a tool.
The tools here are SEOmoz are really good but there are a lot of tools out there that were build by people who are really good programers but bumbling oafs when it comes to SEO. Do you want them as the Captains of your ship?
Q: If millions of webmasters are using the same kickass tool who will win?
A: The smart guy who thinks for himself.
OK..... your original question was "How strict should you be?"
My answer to that is... don't rely on tools. Develop your skill to a level where you can rely on yourself. Use tools to check things and when you find a really good one it might be handy to optimize a million database pages - until you have time to tweak the best ones yourself. Don't be afraid to doubt tools and go with your gut. Once you become a better-than-average SEO you are better than most of the tools.
Use your brain. Bet on yourself. You will not defeat your competitor by mimicking him. You will beat him by doing something that is clearly superior.
If all of your competitors are slavin' to the tools you have a chance to make a lot of money.

I think your larger question is, "If I do everything in the SEOMoz Page Report am I going to rank well?" and of course the answer is "Maybe?". The SEOMoz tools are good, but the concepts involved are far too diverse for one tool to be perfect in this regard. They are a great starting point and troubleshooting tool, but there's usually more to it than dotting the i's and crossing the t's.
This doesn't mean your effort is wasted, or that an A rating on the page is not worth attaining, but rather that internet search methodology is such a large topic and changes so rapidly there's no way to guarantee a tool like this's results. Put another way, if they >could< guarantee the results, there'd be a lot of SEO/SEMs out of business right now!
So what's the best answer for you? It's hard to say; this is really the grey area where SEO expertise becomes more than the tools you use and solid analysis. If you've examined this recently moving competition's factors and can't find anything to action I'm not sure. Having an A rating on page means you can probably prioritize other factors like backlinks, article submission, press releases, etc. It means that your on page metrics likely aren't currently a weakness, you can concentrate on other things.

Hi Bob
I think it is always important to have your on-page optimisation spot on. I'm pretty sure your competition will also do their homework. Just remember that optimisation doesn't end on-page there are of-site factors as well.

Why does one page rank while a similar page doesn't?
We have a blog post (actually several of them that have the same SEO characteristics) that brings a fair amount of traffic to our site (relatively speaking), and according to Google Webmaster Tools it averages in the top 10 in SERPs for various terms. This page has no external links to it, and very few internal links pointing to it. When I run Moz's On-Page Grader for the various keywords it ranks for, the page get's an F on all of them. It was not optimized for any keyword, and it isn't our best content; it was a blog post written a few years ago and forgotten about and was never promoted in any way. The topic does happen to be about something that people search for frequently. According to the keyword difficulty tool, all of the keywords it ranks for have 40-45% difficulty. We have lots of other pages on our site that we have tried to optimize and that get A's and B's in On-Page Grader, that have both internal (from the home page and main menu) and external links pointing at them, etc, but they don't rank well at all. Keyword difficulty for these keywords is in the same range, from 37 - 53%. Why does this one page rank so well when the other pages don't? Additionally, we have been looking at a competitor who has a page that ranks #1 in universal results for numerous keywords according to SEMRush, yet the page gets an F On-page Grader for those keywords. The page has 3 links to it, all from the same domain and it has a very low domain and page authority. The Domain Authority of this page is 47 and the page authority is 33 according to Open Site Explorer (compared with our DA of 30, and PA of 1), and the social metrics are a bit higher than ours, but neither has a lot (they may have 15 likes to our 10). Why does this page rank so well for them? How can we get our Page Authority higher? Thanks for any and all help.

Why is Moz Reporting as Duplicate Page Titles?
Our most recent MOZ crawl campaign is reporting 931 duplicate page title errors, most of which are "Product Review" pages like the following. Although there is only one review on this page, http://www.audiobooksonline.com/Cell_Stephen_King_unabridged_compact_discs.html, MOZ is reporting 15 duplicate page title, four of which I present below. http://www.audiobooksonline.com/reviews/review.php/full/0743554337/0/name/desc

1 page crawled ... and other errors
1. Why is only one (1) page crawled every second time you crawl my site? 2. Why do your bot not obey the rules specified in the robots.txt? 3. Why does your site constantly loose connection to my facebook account/page? This means that when ever i want to compare performance i need to re-authorize, and therefor can not see any data until next time. Next time i also need to re-authorize ... 4. Why cant i add a competitor twitter account? What ever i type i get an "uh oh account cannot be tracked" - and if i randomly succeed, the account added never shows up with any data. It has been like this for ages. If have reported these issues over and over again. We are part of a large scandinavian company represented by Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. The companies are also part of a larger worldwide company spreading across England, Ireland, Continental Europe and Northern Europe. I count at least 10 accounts on Seomoz.org We, the Northern Europe (4 accounts) are now reconsidering our membership at seomoz.org. We have recently expanded our efforts and established a SEO-community in the larger scale businees spanning all our countries. Also in this community we are now discussing the quality of your services. We'll be meeting next time at 27-28th of june in London. I hope i can bring some answers that clarify the problem we have seen here on seomoz.org. As i have written before: I love your setup and you tools - when they work. Regretebly, that is only occasionally the case!

"Too many on-page links" warning on all of my Wordpress pages
Hey guys, I've got like 120 "Too many on-page links" warnings in my crawl diagnostics section. They're all the pages of my WordPress blog. Is this an acceptable and expected warning for Wordpress or does something need to be better optimized? Thanks.

Issue: Duplicate page title
Hello, I have run the "Crawl Diagnostics" report using SEOmoz pro and it says that I have a total of 56 errors. 18 of those errors being duplicate content and another 38 errors being duplicate title tags. Now I have looked at both reports and detail and the reason I am getting there errors is due to the fact the it is checking "http" and "https". So for example: my website is http://www.widgets.com On the crawl diagnostics report, it also checks https://www.widgets.com So it looks like I have duplicate content and duplicate title tags because of this Now my question is this: Is this really duplicate content? If so, how do I fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

SEOMoz Campaign Tool
I've noticed that when looking at the SEOmoz tool, specifically the On Page analysis tool, it is still looking at an old url. About two months ago I made updates to all of our category page URLs. Previously the old urls were stuffed with keywords, strange characters and were really long. When looking at the on-page tool though it is referencing the old urls for keywords and I'm wondering why? I figure its been long enough to recognize the new urls. Is the paring of a keyword and a url saved and just graded on a weekly basis to produce the report? I had expected to see the new url's by now which are also represented in the sitemap. Around that same time I also added our TellAFriend Page and Review pages to our Robots.txt file as not to be crawled but I still see these pages come up in the errors report. Should this update as well?

SEOMOZ tools are not helping!
So, I have a website www.mobikwik.com which provides mobile phone topup in India. I signed up for SEOMOZ Pro membership a little less than a month ago. For all our competitors , which rank above us in google as of today , I checked out two things a) competitive link analysis and b) on-page optimization. On b) , our home page had the best optimization for targeted keywords and the best score amongst all competitors who ranked above us. On a) , linkscape tools showed our moztrust and mozrank to be the best. Except for 2 competitors, our domain authority was also better than the rest. Inspite of all this, our website is ranked no more than 6 on google for all targeted keywords. We have the best quality links amongst our competitors. I am at a loss to understand this and how to improve our ranking. I have to make a decision whether to renew my SEOMOZ membership in 2 days time. Please help me decide!
