Hi Atul, Following is the response to your queries. 1). 'Map.pdf' refers to the name of the pdf and 'file' refers to the directory in which it is stored. 2). Using the above code, you would be able to track the click on the links and not the downloads. For setting up event tracking for a pdf download, I would recommend you to place the following code within the code of your download link onClick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'download', 'Pdf', 'Mypdfname',, true]);" Thus, the final download link would look like Download PDF Now that you have set up event tracking script in place, you now need to set up the event as a goal in Google Analytics. For that, follow the steps, 1. Open up the profile you wish to set up the goal in. 2. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Google Analytics interface. 3. Click the Goals tab (in the sub-navigation just below where your Profile is listed) 4. Choose the Goal Set you wish to add the event to. 5. Name your goal and select the Event radio button. 6. Populate the following goal details: Category | that matches | download Action | that matches | Pdf Label | that matches | Mypdfname Value | that matches | 7. If you’ve added a Value in step 1, leave the “Use the actual Event Value” radio button selected. 8. Click “Save” and you’re ready to go! Hope, it might help! Cheers!

I doesn't. It does you a number of views, because there's a lot different solutions in internet browsers and plugins and user can even view it in Google docs viewer. But for many purposes it is sufficient to know that user view a document.
You can implement dedicated java script tool to know the number of downloads. Probably the code mentioned by nvs.nim (below) realizes such an action.
Good luck

Thanks.

Hi again,
First you should decide about tracking method. Next read Google article and finally ask us a specific not general question. I think it is fair advise
-
I am still not sure about the EXACT code. Can you please give me the code to track how many persons have downloaded PDF files from a site.
I will appeciate greatly
-
Hi Atul,
Did this answer your question, or do you still have questions about this topic?
-
Hi Steve,
Could you please tell me how? What specific technical solution you use?
Thanks, Marek

We track our PDF downloads via content. This way, we know how many of each particular one were downloaded.
-
It does not look right cos it was a virtual pageview tracking or mixture of both methods.
_trackPageview() creates a virtual directory structures and _trackEvent() creates an event...
-
Hi,
I think that it's better to use event tracking than virtual page-view tracking.
Syntax and parameters explanation
_trackEvent(category, action, opt_label, opt_value, opt_noninteraction)'```
[]);">Download](#)where: -category (required) - e.g. Maps (The name you supply for the group of objects you want to track.) - action (required) - e.g. Download (A string that is uniquely paired with each category, and commonly used to define the type of user interaction for the web object.) - label (optional) - e.g. EuropeMap or filename map.pdf (An optional string to provide additional dimensions to the event data.) - value (optional) - An integer that you can use to provide numerical data about the user event. It is very complicated to quick explanation and usage, you should read full article and additions like: Implicit Count. - non-interaction (optional) - set it for "true" (A boolean that when set to `true`, indicates that the event hit will not be used in bounce-rate calculation.) In this link you can read full google help article: http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/eventTrackerGuide.html In your case syntax will be: [](http://www.example.com/files/map.pdf) [Then go to analytics to "Content" section of the reports and view Event Tracking an you will have: category: PDF Action: Download label: MyMap and count .... count how many events you have Wish you a huge number of downloads. Using this code will track all the files you offer to download: /** * Measuring GA Files */ var extensions = ['pdf','doc','docx','xls','csv','jpg','gif', 'mp3','swf','txt','ppt','zip','gz','dmg','xml']; var download_ga_folder = '/downloads/'; $('a').each(function(){ var _self = $(this); var u = $(this).attr('href'); if(typeof(u) != 'undefined'){ if(u.indexOf("?")!=-1){ uext = u.substring(0, u.lastIndexOf("?")); }else{ uext = u; }; var ext = uext.split('.')[uext.split('.').length - 1]; //check extensions for(i = 0; i < extensions.length; i++){ if(ext == extensions[i]){ _self.click(function(){ pageTracker._trackPageview(download_ga_folder + _self.attr('href')); return false; }); break; }; }; }; });

HI Aful,
Your event tracking anatomy does not look righ to me. Go here to see how to structure it correctly:
http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/eventTrackerGuide.html#AnatomyReagrding where the data should render in Google Anlytics go to Content sub category events ,
Good luck!

Are sliders killing our site?
Our website, http://shatterbuggy.com, has what I believe is a systemic issue that stems from the heavy reliance upon the Revolution Slider for Wordpress. I am not an SEO expert and our site has vexed many SEOs in the past. We get feedback regularly from customers (especially those that are not tech savvy) that express gratitude for the ease of use via following an image to image sequence to get to their respective booking. This was our goal when creating the site. Incidentally, in many cases, the only linking from page to page is within the slider itself (clickable image) and there is little to no content. That said, we seems to stumble in SERPS against seemingly inferior competition. For example, we should be ranked in spot 1, 2, or 3 ish for "iPhone repair Minneapolis" but rather we are stuck near spot 15. Any thoughts on whether this is a strategy that may be harming us? If so, would simply creating content on these empty (slider only) pages help? Should we create "static links" that connect to the same places as the slider? Also, is our particular use of the slider creating H1 issues? Thank you all! B.

Https Cached Site
Hi there, I recently switch my site to a new ecommerce platform which hosts the SSL certificate on their end so my site no longer has the HTTPS status unless a user is going through the checkout. Google has cached the HTTPS version of the site so in search it comes up sometimes which leads to a nasty warning that the site may not be what they are looking for. Is there a way to tell google NOT to look at the https version of the site anymore? Thanks! Bianca

Staging site and "live" site have both been indexed by Google
While creating a site we forgot to password protect the staging site while it was being built. Now that the site has been moved to the new domain, it has come to my attention that both the staging site (site.staging.com) and the "live" site (site.com) are both being indexed. What is the best way to solve this problem? I was thinking about adding a 301 redirect from the staging site to the live site via HTACCESS. Any recommendations?

Two Sites with Similar Content
I have a specialized website for hospitals covering a specific topic. This same topic is also applicable to another market but with some minor modifications. I'm thinking about starting a new site to target this specific market and use the same content as the one specialized for healthcare. I will have to make some minor adjustments to the articles to take out the healthcare part and replace with the other industry. If my content is similar between both sites and both authored by me could that possibly hurt my rankings? Any opinions appreciated.

Quoting From Another Part of Your Site
Suppose that you wrote an awesome piece of content and want to feature short segments of that content on your product pages. Is there any risk (such as duplicate content problems) to quoting a paragraph from another page of your site?

Mobile site rank on Google S.E. instead of desktop site.
Hello, all SEOers~ Today, I would like to hear your opinion regarding on Mobile site and duplicate contents issue. I have a mobile version of our website that is hosted on a subdomain (m instead www). Site is targeting UK and Its essentially the same content, formatted differently. So every URL on www exists also at the "m" subdomain and is identical content. (there are some different contents, yet I could say about 90% or more contents are same) Recently I've noticed that search results are showing links to our mobile site instead of the desktop site. (Google UK) I have a sitemap.xml for both sites, the mobile sitemap defined as follows: I didn't block googlebot from mobile site and also didn't block googlebot-mobile from desktop site. I read and watched Google webmaster tool forum and related video from Matt Cutts. I found many opinion that there is possibility which cause duplicate contents issue and I should do one of followings. 1. Block googlebot from mobile site. 2. Use canonical Tag on mobile site which points to desktop site. 3. Create and develop different contents (needless to say...) Do you think duplicate contents issue caused my mobile site rank on S.E. instead of my desktop site? also Do you think those method will help to show my desktop site on S.E.? I was wondering that I have multi-country sites which is same site format as I mentioned above. However, my other country sites are totally doing fine on Google. Only difference that I found is my other country sites have different Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop site, but my UK mobile site has same Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop. Do you think this also has something to do with current problem? Please people~! Feel free to make some comments and share your opinion. Thanks for reading my long long explanation.
