Redirect questions
-
Hi!
A client of mine have created a new site with a new URL structure which they launched the other day. They have done a 301 redirect on all pages on the old site to the start page on the new site. E.g:
www.olddomain.com/subfolder1/index.html -> www.newdomain.com
www.olddomain.com/subfolder2/index.html -> www.newdomain.comI'm thinking of fixing this now so the redirect instead looks someting like this:
www.olddomain.com/subfolder1/index.html -> www.newdomain.com/newsubfolder1/index.html
www.olddomain.com/subfolder1/index.html -> www.newdomain.com/newsubfolder1/index.htmlTwo questions:
1. Is it worth doing the latter kind of redirect in all cases (after all, it involves quite a lot more work compared to the first solution)? or do you recommend the first solution for all redirect projects?
2. Now that they have already done the first solution, is it at all worth amending this to the latter or is everything spoiled now that they have already gone ahead with the first solution?Many thanks in advance!

Thanks guys!
So my interpretation of your feedback and the short answer to my questions are:
1. Yes, it's worth doing.
2. Yes, it's worth doing.Cheers!

You should only need one redirect if link stucture is the same,
point both domains at the new site
then create a rule if HTTP_HOST is not newdomain.com then redirect to new domain,
here is the rule for IIS
<rule name="CanonicalHostNameRule1"><match url="(.*)"><conditions><add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^thatsit.com.au$" negate="true"></add></conditions>
<action type="Redirect" url="http://thatsit.com.au/{R:1}"></action></match></rule>http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-domain-name-issues

From a visitors perspective, if you've got links to deep pages, then it would be worth creating redirects to the relevant content on the new site.
If someone follows a link from another site with anchor text along the lines of "see this great article about x" and it just goes to the homepage, the visitor is going to find it rather jarring...

Agree with Rasmus pm the whole.
I'd still go with the updated subfolder version even if google has crawled the pages...these things take a while to settle down.
If there are lots of pages, check out the tool Russ Jones shared for using Levenshtein distance to automate creating redirects http://www.seomoz.org/blog/set-it-and-forget-it-seo-chasing-the-elusive-passive-seo-dream
There's another great post for larger sites that could help: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/scripting-seo-5-pandafighting-tricks-for-large-sites-14455
And here's another version that creates the htaccess redirects for you (though I've not tried it so don't know how well it works) http://www.conversationmarketing.com/2010/10/levinshtein_link_fixer_aka_the.htm

in cpanel there is an option to redirect all at once, keeping the structure of site. try cpanel.yourdomain.com

I would recommend making the redirects from subfolder to subfolder. If you redirect all pages to the new frontpage Google needs to crawl the new site from scratch in order to index all pages.
If you make the 301 redirect from old pages to corresponding new pages I would say it is worth the effort. Otherwise www.newdomain.com/newsubfolder1/index.html needs to build up its own new page ranking since it is a new URL that Google does not know.
Question is if Google has already crawled a lot of the old URLs, but if it was me I would get on making the correct redirects before Google crawls to many of the old URLs. This will give the new site better ranking from the start I should think AND it will save time for the Google crawlers. One should always anticipate a drop when changing domain, but it is always a good idea to take precautions in order to ensure a quick bounce back.

Is an international redirect hurting my ranking
We're a small international company that redirects users based on their language identifier.

I've now taken a big interest in and also how it affects ranking. When I look at my MOZ dashboard the fundedbyme.com domain has a higher ranking than fundedbyme.com/en/ for example. Our company wants to target other markets such as Spain and Germany, I am imposing penalties on myself by not having rel="canonical" in place and redirecting to the TLD?0 -
.htaccess redirect question
Hi guys and girls Please forgive me for being an apache noob, but I've been trawling for a while now and i can't seem to find a definitive guide for my current scenario. I've walked into a but of a cluster$%*! of a job, to rescue a horribly set up site. One of many, many problems is that they have 132 302redirects set up. Some of these are identical pages but http-https, others are the same but https-http and some are redirects to different content pages with http-http. A uniform redirecting of http to https is not an option so I'm looking to find out the best practice for reconfiguring these 302s to 301s within .htaccess? Thanks in advance 🙂

Should I change or redirect this URL?
Happy Friday everyone! I just noticed that one of our Attorney Profile's url's is wrong. We used to have someone named "Dana Fortugno" as our Family Law attorney, but when he left, (over two years ago) we hired "Scott Finelli." The person who setup the site, just changed the information on the page not url. So instead of it saying "http://www.kempruge.com/scott-finelli-jd-llm/;" it says "http://www.kempruge.com/dana-fortugno-jd-llm/." I'm considering taking all the content on the page with the wrong url, copying it to a new page with the correct URL and 301 redirecting (what would now be a blank page) to the new page with the correct URL. Is this the best way to handle this? Also, I don't believe there are many SEO concerns regarding the pages specifically. The profile pages aren't what we rank for in any of our Family Law related keywords. I am worried about having a completely blank page that just 301 redirects as looking bad to google, but not sure if it would? As always, thank you for your time and any assistance you can provide. One more redirect question
If there are two URLs like below: example.com/toys/batman-toys
Technical SEO | | IceIcebaby
example.com/birthday/batman-toys Both have the exact same everything, except URL key. The first example ranks for all KWs and search terms in the SEs. Does having the second page hurt my ranking potential for the first page? Should I redirect the 2nd page to the first or just leave it? As always, thanks for your help.0 -
Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

Redirecting 404
Hi. I'm working on a wordpress site, which got some old deleted pages indexed and now shows a 404 (also in the results) As these old pages earlier got content and probably also some links pointing towards it, what would then be best practice to do? Should i make an 301 redirect? Make the 404 noindex?

Popup Question
Hi Everyone, I have a question. Your input will be very much appreciated. My company's new website design is using a popup. I have some reservation about it and I want to know what your thoughts are. Ok, some information on what this popup is like. When a user clicks on a subcategory page, there's a popup that would ask for size, color, etc - it's like a form and those are the criteria. If nothing is selected, the product list on the subcategory page doesn't load - so the only thing is showing is the the H1 and description but everything else is empty. When a user does select a criteria the landing page is no longer the subcategory but another page with that ID. So basically the user never really land on the subcategory page but to another page with a different query string. Is this bad for SEO? Would you recommend to keep the popup? Thanks,

Robots.txt Question
In the past, I had blocked a section of my site (i.e. domain.com/store/) by placing the following in my robots.txt file: "Disallow: /store/" Now, I would like the store to be indexed and included in the search results. I have removed the "Disallow: /store/" from the robots.txt file, but approximately one week later a Google search for the URL produces the following meta description in the search results: "A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more" Is there anything else I need to do to speed up the process of getting this section of the site indexed?
