How will engines deal with duplicate head elements e.g. title or canonicals?
-
Obviously duplicate content is never a good thing...on separate URL's. Question is, how will the engines deal with duplicate meta tags on the same page.
Example Head Tag:
<title>Example Title - #1</title>
<title>Example Title - #2</title>
My assumption is that Google (and others) will take the first instance of the tag, such that "Example Title - #1" and canonical = "http://www.example.com" would be considered for ranking purposes while the others are disregarded.
My assumption is based on how SE's deal with duplicate links on a page. Is this a correct assumption?
We're building a CMS-like service that will allow our SEO team to change head tag content on the fly. The easiest solution, from a dev perspective, is to simply place new/updated content above the preexisting elements. I'm trying to validate/invalidate the approach.
Thanks in advance.

I presume that the engines simply disregard one of the tags vs. building a penalty based rule, but because we'll also use this solution for canonical tags, there's just too much risk with the approach.
I still think it may be a solid (simple) test, so if I manage to get some free time, I'll set something up and post results.
Consensus says...don't do it!
Thanks for confirming my fears

Hey Shane,
I completely agree, code duplication should be avoided wherever possible. I've found very little recent info on this specific topic so it seems ripe for a quick test. Stay tuned and thanks for your 2 cents.

While there is no authoritative answer from Google or Mr. Cutts, general consensus amongst my SEO peers that were just IM'd by me seems to be multiple titles on a page is bad. I agree with the consensus.
Years ago, multiple <title>s was a common blackhat technique. This is back when you could successfully stuff meta keywords and it'd actually work. As for now if it would just be neutral or actively negative...I don't know, but my gut leans to it'd be actively negative to some degree.</p></title>

Interesting, as I suspected. Looks like they've got a few other issues to e.g. first meta keyword tag was not closed so looks like it includes the meta description.
Thanks for the example!

Here's the only example I know of: http://www.kbzk.com/home/
If you go into the source you will see the KBZK.com Title tag, and then a Title tag with their Tag Line. The search engine only recognizes the first one, as well as any browser that you would use.

Others may have differing opinions but i personally would not do this just based off of best practices. The more tags (code) you put in the head, the more data to be read, and since crawlers in general only crawl a certain amount of your page adding superfluous code would not be recommended.
but yes, I believe in theory the duplicate title would just be ignored, and probably no penalty would be incurred.
As to the duplicate canonical.... I am not sure about that one, I would think it would be ignored, but do not want to give you bad info as that could really mess you up if canonicals are incorrectly received by Google Algo.

Will HTTPS Effect SERPS Depending on Different Page Content?
I know that HTTPS can have a positive influence on SERPS. Does anyone have any thoughts or evidence of this effect being different depending on the page content? For example, I would think that for e-commerce sites HTPS is a must, and I guess the change in rankings would be more significant. But what about other situations, AMP pages for example? Of if you run Adsense, or Affiliate links? Or if your page contains a form?

Spaces at beginning of title tag - negatively affect the optimization of the page?
For some reason, our title tags have a long space after the beginning title tag and before the text appears. The beginning title tag is on one line, then a break, a tab and then the content of the title tag. I'm pretty sure this is not good and is affecting optimization of the page. Am I correct or is this not an issue and does not need to be fixed? Example: | <title></span></p> <p> </p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="line-number"> </td> <td class="line-content"> First keyword</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></title> |

Redirecting duplicate pages
For whatever reason, X-cart creates duplicates of our categories and articles so that we have URLs like this www.k9electronics.com/dog-training-collars
Web Design | | k9byron
www.k9electronics.com/dog-training-collars/ or http://www.k9electronics.com/articles/anti-bark-collar
http://www.k9electronics.com/articles/anti-bark-collar/ now our SEO guy says that we dont have to redirect these because google is "smart enough" to know they are the same, and that we should "leave it as-is". However, everything I have read online says that google sees this as dupe content and that we should redirect to one or the other / or no /, depending on which most of our internal links already point to, which is with a slash. What should we do? Redirect or leave it as is? Thanks!0 -
Penalized by duplicate content?
Hello, I am in a very weird position. I am managing a website(EMD) which a part of it dynamically creates pages. The former webmaster who create this system though that this would help with SEO but I dought! The thing is that now the site has about 1500 pages which must look duplicate but are they really duplicate? Each page has a unique URL but the content is pretty much the same: one image and a different title with 5-8 words. There is more: All these pages are not accessible by the users but only for the crawlers!!! This URL machine is a part of a php - made photo gallery which i never understood the sense of it! The site overall is not performing very well in SERP, especially after Penguin, but judging by the link profile, the Domain authority, construction (ok besides that crazy photo gallery) and content, it never reached the position it should have in the past. The majority of these mysterious pages - and mostly their images - are cached by Google and some of them are in top places to some SERP - the ones that match the small title on page - but the numbers are poor, 10 - 15 clicks per month. Are these pages considered as duplicated, although they are cached, and is it safe for the site just to remove 1500 at once? The seomoz tools have pointed some of them as dups but the majority not! Can these pages impact the image of the whole site in search engines?( drop in Google and has disappeared from Yahoo and Bing!) Do I also have to tell Google about the removal? I have not seen anything like it before so any comment would be helpful! Thank you!

Google changed the title?
I've been reading that Google will sometimes change the home page title, and I have finally seen this in action. Search for and on the second page you'll find but the title says Academy Dog Training. Which is not what's in the title tag for this page. Did Google change the title tag on us and if so why? How can we get them to use our title?

How do you deal with comment spam: wordpress?
I have akismet installed on my Wordpress blog, and it does a great job of filtering the spam comments, but for some reason my site (and server) gets slammed by the amount of spam comments akismet blocks. If I check my spam folder there will be over 100 spam comments in an hour. (which in turn puts a load on my server.) Does anyone have any thoughts on how to put a stop to this? (Or at least slow it down?) I know I could use a captcha, but I really don't want to put any barriers on people commenting and I don't even like using those captcha's myself. Thoughts? By the way, does anyone know how spam like this works? This has been going on for sometime now. Are spammers just using automated software to do this?

Does anyone think the <figcaption>attribute from HTML5 will have any influence for image search?</figcaption>
There is a <figure>element that is supposed to provide better descriptions of image on the web in HTML5 - do you think that will replace the importance of the "Alt" tag? Link to figcaption description </figure>
