Caninical issue
-
Hello all,
I have a problem related to "canonical issues" that I would like to get your view on:
The issue:
Our site: http://www.texaspoker.dk/ has a "canonical issue" with the home page.
We added a redirect to www.texaspoker.dk, but this hasn't solved our problem.
In the latest "too many on page links" analysis made with SEOmoz' exelent SEO tool, we get the following error:
http://www.texaspoker.dk(101 on page links)
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 (on page links)
So, made simple, the analysis tells us that both http://www.texaspoker.dk and http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 has too many on page links. How do I eliminate / remove the unwanted http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 and how did it, in the first place, get there?
Thanks a lot!

Hi again,
I managed to fix it for the frontpage using the folowing PHP code:
if(isset($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'])){
$get_uri = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
if($get_uri!="/"){ $url = "/"; header('Location: ' . $url, true, 301);
}
}
?>

Hi @SEOConsult,
Will the .htaccess fix you mentioned affect other paginated pages on our site?
-
Hi again,
Thanks a lot for your answer and the solution to fix the problem on the front page.
We use Nginx as web server software but we can setup the .htaccess stuff in the .conf file. However we have other paginated pages on our site. Will the above mentioned solution affect all paginated pages on our site?
-
No problem Do you have a .htaccess file within the root directory? If not, create a new .htaccess file and add this rule:
RewriteRule ^page?=(.*)$ / [L,R=301]
I'd suggest that you add a canonical tag to all pages too.

Hi again,
Thanks for your advice - the thing is that this is what I have already tried. The problem here is that the site apparently allows one to write: http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=3
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=4
etc.Do you - or anybody else - have an idea how I can stop this?
Thanks a lot, your advice is very much appreciated.
-
You're correct, that is a canonical issue. I'd suggest that you 301 redirect ?page=2 back to the root.
Good luck!

Hi SEOConsult,
Thanks a lot for the answer. I will try to get some of the links removed, as they are not all "necessary."
This being said, I still believe that it's a problem for my site that there are access to two different homepages (?):
and:
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2
Thanks a lot, all suggestions are very much appreciated.

Hi there,
Firstly, I think it's important to note that the tool isn't telling you that the site has canonical issues. Canonical issues are basically when you can view the same page from more than one version of the URL.
The "too many links" issue is, as it suggests, the page has too many links.
At the moment the homepage (http://www.texaspoker.dk/) has 102 links, which is acceptable however you should look at removing any unnecassary links on-page. Generally, you should look at having few than 100 links on a page. Having 102 is fine but obviously if you can remove unnecessary links, do it.
The fewer links on the page the better
Hope that helps/clears things up!

Does using a canonical with ?utm_source=gmb cause any issues?
All of our URLs in Google My Business are tagged with ?utm_source=gmb. This way when people click on it within a Google Map listing, knowledge graph, etc we know it came from there. I'm assuming using a canonical on all ?_utm_source _pages (we have others, including some in the index) won't cause any problems with this, correct? Since they're not technically traditional organic SERPs? Dumb question I know, but better safe than sorry. Thanks.

Historic issue with incomplete indexing
Hi there We run quite a big site in the UK in the commercial real-estate space. Historically we have always had a challenge getting our "primary" landing pages indexed, which are location based property result pages. e.g. https://realla.co/to-rent/commercial-property/oxford For example, for the "towns" category we have 8,549 submitted in our xml sitemap, with only 3,171 indexed. This is a general issue across all our sitemaps. 120k submitted, 80k indexed. Our pages are linked through breadcrumbs, and nearby links. In the new search console these pages are reported as "crawled - currently not indexed" These all sit under the folder: site:https://realla.co/to-rent/commercial-property/* site:https://realla.co/to-rent/office/* We have done extensive work to optimise performance, including AMP pages. Each location page has many details pages for individual properties e.g. https://realla.co/to-rent/details/0ffbbd0a1a1147edb8847c5ce6179509 One action we have remaining is to nest the details under the locations pages, which may help. These details pages are indexed fully. Any feedback much appreciated

Best way to fix duplicate content issues
Another question for the Moz Community. One of my clients has 4.5k duplicate content issues. For example: http://www.example.co.uk/blog and http://www.example.co.uk/index.php?route=blog/blog/listblog&year=2017. Most of the issues are coming from product pages. My initial thoughts are to set up 301 redirects in the first instance and if the issue persists, add canonical tags. Is this the best way of tackling this issue?

What server issues might cause temporary and repeated Soft 404/500 Errors that appear to be functioning correctly when checked later from Google Webmaster Tools?
We are experiencing unknown server issues (we think) which are causing Soft 404/500 errors at unpredictable times on 2 websites. When we check on the pages, they’re fine but still show errors in Moz/Search Console. What are some measures we can take to protect from this or figure out what is causing this? Example URL for Soft 404 Error: https://www.advancedtraveltherapy.com/jobs/any/occupational-therapist/any/ Example URL for 500 Error: https://www.advancedtraveltherapy.com/job-detail/ms/physical-therapist/87529740/ Example URL for Soft 404 Error: https://www.advancedtravelnursing.com/search/searchresults.php?jobState=CA&tempType=g&specialties= Example URL for 500 Error: https://www.advancedtravelnursing.com/job/ma/registered-nurse/emergency-room/87108662/

Duplicate Page Title Crawl Error Issue
In the last crawl for on of our client websites the duplicate page title and page content numbers were very high. They are reading every page twice. http://www.barefootparadisevacations.com and http://barefootparadisevacations.com are being read as two different pages with the same page title. After the last crawl I used our built in redirect tool to redirect the urls, but the most recent crawl showed the same issue. Is this issue really hurting our rankings and if so, any suggestions on a fix for the problem? Thank you!

Http & https canonicalization issues
Howdyho I'm SEOing a daily deals site that mostly runs on https Versions. (only the home page is on http). I'm wondering what to do for canonicalization. IMO it would be easiest to run all pages on https. But the scarce resources I find are not so clear. For instance, this Youmoz blog post claims that https is only for humans, not for bots! That doesn't really apply anymore, right?

Local Search | Website Issue with Duplicate Content (97 pages)
Hi SEOmoz community. I have a unique situation where I’m evaluating a website that is trying to optimize better for local search and targeting 97 surrounding towns in his geographical location. What is unique about this situation is that he is ranking on the 1st and 2nd pages of the SERPs for his targeted keywords, has duplicate content on 97 pages to his site, and the search engines are still ranking the website. I ran the website’s url through SEOmoz’s Crawl Test Tool and it verified that it has duplicate content on 97 pages and has too many links (97) per page. Summary: Website has 97 duplicate pages representing each town, with each individual page listing and repeating all of the 97 surrounding towns, and each town is a link to a duplicate page. Question: I know eventually the site will not get indexed by the Search Engines and not sure the best way to resolve this problem – any advice?
