How did a competitor's brand name get in google's related search list?
-
When doing a google search for the term "ulster county real estate" the related search list at the bottom of the serp includes 7 obviously related search terms and 1 brand name of a competitor. (see attachment)
The competitor doesn't rank for this term organically at all yet he enjoys a link on the first page with those of us that do by being in the related search list? I don't get it.
Anyone know how something like this happens?

Thanks Paul, I understand what you're saying, although I don't believe that applies to my question.
The search was not done on companies. It was a general and broad real estate search. The related searches listed all are real estate related to the initial search performed. Except for 1 single related search, which displays the company name of a competitor.
I've also seen this competitor do this on Bing & Yahoo, for another website they have, which does not rank for the search term, yet appears as a related search.
For example - go to Bing.com. Type in the search "ulster county real estate" - now look to the left at the related searches - See "Fitzgerald Real Estate" - that's the same competitor. Some how, he is able to reach these related searches. See screen shot.......

Google has so much user data, that it will sometimes post suggested sites that might be competitors of yours. When someone enters my company name in Google, one of my local competitors comes up because people who have searched for my site (or my products,) could have also checked our their site, or the "algo" has enough historical data to know that you are looking for a product in a certain region, etc. Did you use your competitor's name in a general search and see your company name come up in the suggested sites? It can go both ways, depending on a number of factors.

Our sitemap is not indexed i Google even though it's successfully processed
Hi, Ours is a WP hosted website. We have submitted the XML sitemap with a WP plugin. It's been successfully processed by Google but it's not been indexed in and can't be found in SERP. How to get this indexed? Will there be any low crawling of sitemap as it's not indexed? Thanks

Author Photo No Longer Showing Up in Search
My author photo has been showing up in search for quite some time but starting today I noticed that it no longer does even though the structured data testing tool still has it showing up. It only seems to show up on my google+ profile. Anyone notice the same thing?

Effectiveness of a Guest Blog if it is not getting you any traffic
Hi, I have been paying adequate attention to Guest Blogging for the past 4-5 months. I have posted good quality articles on some decently ranked websites. Of late I managed to get a guest post on a website with a page rank of 4. But I didn't get any referral traffic from it. My concern was will the Guest Blog also contribute to my Organic Search ? Will google give me any points if my links on the Guest Blog are not generating any traffic ? I was under the impression that Guest Blogs will work in your favour and will help in improving your search traffic only if you have visitors from that particular page. Any comments on this ? Eric

Webpage is ranking on google.ie / google.co.uk but not google.com?
One of our site webpage appears to be found in the first few pages on google.ie / google.co.uk but not on google.com. Is there such a thing being penalised on a specific Google domain? Traffic is healthy despite this but I want to rank well for the page in google.com. Any ideas?

Implications of removing all google products from site
Is there any data on the implications of removing everything google from a site; analytics, adsense, webmaster tools, sitemaps, etc. Obviously they still have their search data and they say they dont use these other sources of data for ranking information but has anyone actually tried this or is there any existing data on this?

Google's reaction to site updates
Hi, Is it safe to assume as soon as Google indexes updates I've made to my site that any ranking changes the updates effected will happen at that same time, or is there ever a lag time before these changes ( if any ) take effect?

Retail Searching Patterns
Does anyone have empirical data regarding the pattern in which a consumer shops for an item? I would like to find some information regarding whether consumers search for a product first then find a place that sells it or the opposite. I tend to see the organic SEO net focusing more upon company name visibility and not, say for example, the top ten products they sell. It is not always the case but I see with bigger and bigger companies that they seem to rely more heavily upon company name recognition. Any thoughts?
