Deos canonicalisation work across directories?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the group and can't find this question answered anywhere else.
I have a dynamic site that we aim to rewrite the URLs removing parameters and making it easier for the engines to index us and users to recall URLs.
The issue that worries me relates to canonical tags. If I put a canonical tag on a directory..
http://www.abc.com/spain (index page)
and then point all variations of that page to the index page will it stop/pass juice for those pages at the next directory level to the index page rather than properly index and rank those pages appropriately. ie.
http://www.abc.com/spain/Malaga.html will it pass any link juice I have for the second level to the first level?
It concerns me that it will as I had a conversation with someone who lost all visibility on her site and it turned out to be the canonical tag on the home page that was causing it.
Thanks in anticipation

Peter is correct below. I think you are heading in the wrong direction. After your explanation here, I understand a little more about where you are going. Here is what I would say to your question:
1. All "old urls" (and all versions of) will need to have a 301 redirect to the new SEo friendly url. The currency is a different issue. You cant redirect that because you would never be able to show multiple currencies to the right users. In the curreny example, you could use a canonical tag to the most popular or default currency.
2. Directories and IA (information architecture) of your site have nothing to do with redirects or canonical tags. As Peter pointed out below, /spain/malaga is a totally different page than /spain. You dont do anything special with tags here, you just create unique content for each of those pages. You pass proper link juice upwards by internally linking your /spain/malaga page up to your /spain page, and every other page that exists below a main level directory page. Essentially, you want all deeper pages linking up to your main directory page.
3. In the small cases that you will be using the canonical tag, you put those tags on all the pages except the original page.
Hope that clears things up. I was/am still a bit confused as to your structure, but think this should get you in the right direction.

Sorry, I'm still confused (read your reply to Ryan, who asked some good questions). The canonical, like a 301-redirect will consolidate link-juice, but only for the pages it's on and preferably only for actual duplicates.
If you put a canonical tag at the "/Spain" level, it doesn't impact "/Spain/Malaga.html" at all. It just makes sure that any stray inbound links to "/Spain" duplicates (like "/Spain?print=true") have their link-juice consolidated and don't show up in the index.
If you could give a couple of sample tags and how you're looking to use them, maybe we could dig in deeper. I feel like I'm missing something still.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the response. I have to say I'm impressed at the speed!
Hmmm, there is a bit of both going to be happening. We are restructuring some of the dynamic pages to present user and search engine friendly URLs. I understand we will need to be putting in place redirects for those pages, so far so good. We have, for example, pages were each one can have a parameter for each currency. I understand we would merely redirect every parameter version to the original page under the new user friendly URL?
We are then creating specific SEO landing pages for dedicated keywords per page. The URLs in here will be structured in directories. What I am confused about relates to differing levels of directory. If we put in a canonical tag on the top level will it direct all rank and link juice to that level, so Spain/ would benefit from the links to spain/malaga ?? Or would each level hold its own link juice spreading to links out and not the other way? I just don't want to pass link juice 'up' the chain so to speak due to a canonical tag.
Finally, and this may answer my question. If I have two pages that I want a tag to pass the link juice to one of them...do I place the tag on both pages and indicate on both tags the URL of the main page? If that is correct then I understand that the directory issue I am worried about won't exist because I will only put canonical tags on the one directory level.
Hope this isn't too long!
Thanks
Andy

Not sure why you want to use the canonical tag in this instance. If http://www.abc.com/spain/Malaga.html is truly a duplicate or replicated page of the new /spain page, then I guess you could do it. But it sounds to me like you are re-structuring your urls to be more friendly, and if that is the case you will want to permanently 301 redirect the old urls to the new SEO friendly one. That will pass on the SEO juice in a more effective way then canonical a bunch of the old pages that you dont want anyway.
Is that the case? It kind of depends on the content of each of the pages, and how that content interacts with the other pages. Typically canonical is used for paginated instances or duplicated content that is handle in a different matter, not redirecting juice from old urls/pages to new ones.

Duplicate Content for Locations on my Directory Site
I have a pretty big directory site using Wordpress with lots of "locations", "features", "listing-category" etc.... Duplicate Content: https://www.thecbd.co/location/california/ https://www.thecbd.co/location/canada/ referring URL is www.thecbd.co is it a matter of just putting a canonical URL on each location, or just on the main page? Would this be the correct code to put: on the main page? Thanks Everyone!

Website of Products by a Brand on a Sub-Domain or a Sub-Directory?
Hi, We have a brand website under which we plan to develop various apps. We think that putting each website on its own sub-domain would be a good option. E.g. Main website – abc.com; app1 website – app1.abc.com; app2 website – app2.abc.com etc. Would it be the right way to do it or should we put the apps in a sub-directory. E.g. abc.com/app1; abc.com/app2 etc. These apps would either be totally unrelated or may be in future we may provide something so as to enable their integration. Thanks

Duplicate Page Titles Across Portfolio Items
Hi, Quick question about duplicate page titles. I have a few duplicate pages where I've got lots of portfolio items under the same category, lets call it a portfolio of kangaroos. I can see there are separate URLs for each of the pages, i.e, www.blahblah.com/portfolio/kangaroos and www.blahblah.com/portfolio/kangaroos/2, but they both have the same page title, i.e, Kangaroos Portfolio | Domain and it's coming up in Moz as a medium priority duplicate page title error. Where in WordPress can I change the page title for the second page of portfolio items? Thanks very much! Tom.

How to tell when a directory backlink or other backlink is worthy of disavow tool? Especially when a keyword is not ranking passed where it should.
Hello, I jumped aboard as SEO for a client, who seems to of had been hit by panda and penguin back in 2012 of April, the panda part I feel I've fixed by creating better content, combining pages that were same topic into one, basically creating a better content experience that relates better to search terms users are searching for. Once the site was redesigned and relaunched all keywords improved minus one, the main keyword they want to rank for. Created a landing page for it, that is very nicely optimized for that keyword and it's brothers and sisters, however that page isn't used by google since it's brand new with a PA of 1. Doing a backlink audit I found 102 links out of 400 using the same anchor text as the keyword they want ranked for, they also have synonyms anchor text for other links too but not quite as much. Most of those 102 domains using the main keyword anchor text are directories, in my opinion I'd declare all of them spam, however there are a few with DAs higher than 50, making me little more nervous to disavow, since I want to make sure we get out of the penalty if we were hit by penguin but also don't want to ruin the ranking for other keywords we're doing better with, since they are longtails and short, but very relevant to users. How is the best way to determine if a site / directory is spammy enough that it's penalizing you and how could I approach the anchor text issue with backlinks? 99% of these links I cannot have changed, since they're directories I doubt many have had a human mess with them in a while. Sidenote* If you're going to post a link as a response, try to summarize what that link will be about, as many times links are giving as an answer but end up not really providing the meat we were seeking. Thank you!

Will a Robots.txt 'disallow' of a directory, keep Google from seeing 301 redirects for pages/files within the directory?
Hi- I have a client that had thousands of dynamic php pages indexed by Google that shouldn't have been. He has since blocked these php pages via robots.txt disallow. Unfortunately, many of those php pages were linked to by high quality sites mulitiple times (instead of the static urls) before he put up the php 'disallow'. If we create 301 redirects for some of these php URLs that area still showing high value backlinks and send them to the correct static URLs, will Google even see these 301 redirects and pass link value to the proper static URLs? Or will the robots.txt keep Google away and we lose all these high quality backlinks? I guess the same question applies if we use the canonical tag instead of the 301. Will the robots.txt keep Google from seeing the canonical tags on the php pages? Thanks very much, V

Does Anyone Know How Linstant Works??
I recently installed Linkstant after reading lots of great reviews. I'm eager to use the new tool, but I would like to know HOW it works. Does it send Google queries?? Just to give you some background info, I was recently burned by Rank Tracker...after using the tool it killed any access to Google and ruined a Google+ event that our company had planned. I do not want this to happen again, so I'd like to know how exactly it works. Thanks!

Wordpress vs. home grown directory
I just moved my blog from a wordpress hosted solution to my owner server and am really hopeful that all the SEO ready wordpress pages plus I downloaded Yoast SEO will move my site. I started with 9000 pages being moz indexed with tons of errors eyerywhere, I have almost fixed everything getting ready to do a google index. One question. I have a directory of businesses and events for my local mountain community that is home grown with about 200 pages. see here: http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/bigbeardirectory.aspx which has a PA of 21 which is the same as my DA 21 (I know terrible)... Should I migrate these 200 pages with images to wordpress to take advantage of all the nice SEO possibilities? I have staff and it would probably take about $600 bucks to do it. I would only have to put about ten 301's such as http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/contentcat.aspx?ParentID=7 would be http://www.destinationbigbear.com/big-bear-restaurants/ Thank you again to all, I am hopeful I can answer some questions in the future for people... I am learning alot! Nick

Are my canonical re directs working?
Buonjourno from Wetherby UK 🙂 Ive been battlling sometime to get this site http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk to rank for term Right To Manage. Amongst other tactics ive set up a canonical http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/about/right-to-manage.aspx * - Canonical version http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/how-we-care-for-you/right-to-manage.aspx http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/what-our-customers-say/right-to-manage.aspx http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/ - But has this canonical redirect feature worked? The reason i doubt it is i notice when i enter a page http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/what-our-customers-say/right-to-manage.aspx which has the below code in place: rell="canonical" href="http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/About/right-to-manage.aspx/" /> It does not jump to http://www.goldsboroughestates.co.uk/about/right-to-manage.aspx So my question is... "is the canonical redirect working or not & waht is the best way / tool for diagnosing a canonical error" Grazie tanto,
