What is the effect of too many internal links on a page?
-
Hi there! We have been doing a great effort during the last year but our main competitor is still above us in search rankings. Basically, the main differente remains now in the number of internal links, specially in our homepage. We have more than 200 and they only have around 100, so I think we are wasting too much link power among some irrelevant pages. What could be the effect of this?
-
I think that I would use the homepage to promote my most profitable, most brandable and most linkable content. After adopting that philosophy I would increase/decrease the number of links on my homepage to see what produces the most visitor engagement and conversions.
But, getting to your original question... if you are getting your butt kicked in the SERPs you need to go out after links and likes and produce more of the content that attracts them. SEO is a battle of resources and those resources are linkable content and links/likes, etc.
-
Then you're effectively dividing your link juice much more than they are. This is mostly still relevant - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-juice-is-loose
Edit - Wait I take that back, using nofollow to sculpt page rank isn't a recommendation I would give. It still works a bit but I simply want you to watch that video and understand how link juice flows around a site.
Some things you may want to try are to reduce the number of links and only have converting or money making pages linked to from the home page and building links from other sites directly into the subpages.
Building links directly into subpages should have the greatest effect.
Edit - But please don't just chop off links without thinking about it, take some time to work out how you want Googlebot and visitors to move around your site and make sure that you still have links into ALL the pages on your site (but not necessarily from the homepage).
Also, check if all the subpages are being cached regularly, if not then it's probably a fair assumption Google's not working it's way through all your links.
-
If I did understand well, that's exactly what is happening. We're outranking them for the most important keyword for our homepage (which is the same keyword for them) but they're beating us up in all deeper pages - even if we have a very similar structure...
And our domain and homepage has a better link profile than theirs according to Open Site Explorer.
-
I think that 100 links is just a guideline rather than a hard rule. I believe that your most relevant links, your sitemap index and other indispensible links should be only placed on the homepage. The idea of the homepage is to have links leading to the most important links to your next level of links (category links). If you have a page with more than 100 links means that you have a bad hiearchy in terms of Google. I wouldnt advocate it.
-
If I can just add a thought for you as well, assuming your homepage is the one ranking for the keyword that your competitor is beating you on, the PR isn't being distributed until AFTER the link juice is being accounted for, i.e. The homepage still has 50 linkjuice points (I just made that up) which are split between 200 links vs your competitors 50 LJP (but I'm going to keep using it) being split among 100 links; basically the ranking factor of the links should only occur further down your site structure.
What may be a factor with those links is whether you're linking off the page with your main keyword to a subpage. So if you want your homepage to rank for 'keyword' having an exact match anchor link with the text 'keyword' may have some effect.

Hi Candida,
The link juice of the homepage is splitted between the 200 links of the page, SEOMoz recommends about 100 links per page. This may not be the cause of the ranking difference, but you should consider removing the links to the less important pages.
If you wish to make a more important change to your linking architecture, you should follow a pyramidal architecture as described in several seomoz articles :

Hi Candida,
Long time ago Google was recommending 100 Links per page and it was one of their Guidelines, But they don't anymore. (Matt Cutts Reference it in this Video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6g5hoBYlf0)
Try to audit your 200 links and see if all the links are important and adds value to your visitor. but IMO i don't think there is an effect of you having 100 or 200 links more in consideration of your SERPs.
Try to use Linkscape and see your competitor links, and try to pull and acquire the most relevant links linking to your competitor.
Cheers

For an e-commerce product category page that has several funnels to specific products, for SEO purposes does it matter whether the category page's overview content is above or below those funnels?
We manage an e-commerce site. On a category page, there are several funnels to specific products. We moved the category overview content below those funnels to make it easier for users to quickly get to products. Seems more user friendly to me, but could that move of the main content to the lower part of the page be a negative ranking factor?

Page Layout Updates and Mobile Pages with Ads
I have been trying to do some research on the Page Layout Algorithm and Top Heavy Ads and much of what I read does not mention about mobile pages as apposed to desktop. I am curious if the Page Layout updates can be effected by mobile pages as well and if there is any good articles on this subject. Also is this Algorithm been incorporated into its regular algorithm or do we still have to wait for refreshes to see the impact? Cesar

Should a company worry about how many domains it maps to the same home page?
I seem to be at logger heads with developers regarding domain mapping. The scenario: I have a company with one site on a primary domain name, but all the other domains they own are mapped using a tool provided by their hosting vendor. But. what I see is a keyword loaded domain that shows it has been 'mapped' to the primary domain, but you can type into the browser this keyword loaded domain and it will serve up in your browser that same home page you see on the PRIMARY DOMAIN. So, picture this - you are looking at the home page on wwww.keyworddomain.com and see the same home page as www.primarycompanydomain.com - but if you select anything from the menu at www.keyworddomain.com you will be taken immediately to www.primarycompanydomain.com/page-you-selected I just get a feeling this is not right as I can search Google for www.keyworddomain.com and Google lists the site home page on that domain. But when I click through from the listed result, I am taken to www.primarycompanydomain.com which is ideally where I want to be and I would want Google to focus on this domain, and I have told it to do so within the feature included within Google Webmaster Tools. The developers say there is nothing wrong. There argument - why would a hosting company provide this domain mapping feature if it was not best practice. My argument - but Google is listing that domain URL (www.keyworddomain.com) despite the fact it takes me through to www.primarycompanydomain.com - will Google not think this strange despite me telling it via GWMT that www.primarycompanydomain.com is the one and only domain I am working on. Tell me if I am going mad or not, and who is right and who is wrong. Appreciate all your answers.

Too many on page links in sitemap.html
My crawl report is flagging an issue with too many links to one of my pages, this page is my sitemap.html. However, I have coded the page so that if required is specified it generates an .xml version of the page and if not then the html version is displayed. What is the best way to stop the crawl finding the html version whilst maintaining it on the site for clients navigation?

Navigation causing too many links
If I add pages to my site to cover major cities/towns/counties in the UK where I offer wedding bands and link them from the navigation using drop down menus/categories ( I believe this is the best option to allow users to find what they are looking for) I get a'too many links on page' flag. How can I best get around this problem?

Why do I suddenly have so many more page errors?
I've been working diligently to remove page errors that appear after each scan of my website. I was down to 3 or 4 errors after the last crawl, now this week I'm getting 80 plus. I haven't changed anything since last week (page titles, etc.) so what's up?

Alternatives for having less then 100 links per page
Guys, I'm aware of the recomendation of having <100 links per page. The thing is I'm running a vacation rental website (my clients pay me to advertise their properties on my website). We use an AJAX interface with pagination to show the properties. So I have cities that have +400 properties on them... the pagination works fine but google can't crawl trough it (there is a google doc about making ajax systems crawlable, but that would invove a huge rewrite of our code and I dont understand how it helps the SEO). So my question is: what do I do to mantain each property having at least one link pointing to them at the same time that I keep the # of links in each page <100 ? Any suggestions ?

To many links on a single page Error
I've seen it a few times where you should have less then 100 links per page to help crawling unless your a massively authoritative website. But what happens when your a large ecommerce website with categories and sub categories, you could have a category called 'computers' with a drop down list containing lots of sub cat links. Whats the solution to this? Cheers
