Which Moz Rank and I'm seeing External or both external and internal?
-
I found this on the MOZ site. It confused me.
"Whereas MozRank measures the link juice (ranking power) of both internal and external links, external MozRank measures only the amount of mozRank flowing through external links (links located on a separate domain). Because external links can play an important role as independent endorsements, external mozRank is an important metric for predicting search engine rankings."
In the tool bar and other places in Moz am I seeing the combo Internal or the External and how do I get to each? Maybe I'm just reading this wrong.
-
Internal links do pass MozRank (and PageRank) and they do help you to rank, but they don't pass nearly the same amount of juice or ranking power as external links.
To that end, PA does use internal linking in it's calculation, though it's not as big of a factor.

HAHA, yeah, it kind of thew me for a loop too. I've been putting way too much empahsis on mR. Someone that is quite good with SEO explained it to me first and got it all wrong based on what I"m learning now.
When looking at the SEOMOZ tool bar and the link count. That is including internal links too? I'm going to guess it does. Even Google Webmaster Tools does that when I look at links to my site in their interface, which is not often.
It does seem they give an option now for ONLY external. I don't recall.
It seems almost all tools do this, count the internal. Maybe I don't understand something here. I don't think that internal links do anything to improve search engine rankings other than helping Google find the content. And it seems like the sitemap would do a better job of that. But many SEO expert suggest that is a good idea, internal links to help Google find the content. I'm beginning to seriously doubt that. I'm going to ask another question on that top rather than delve into it here.
I know that PA uses mR to calculate a pages PA. so does it use external links only in that computation.
Thanks very much and it really is nice to see SEOmoz employees (i guess you're an employee) answer questions here. The support from you guys has been outstanding!

Hi Rusty,
For a minute I had to shake the cobwebs out of my head to remember what External MozRank was.
For the most part, SEOmoz tools and Open Site Explorer hardly ever display External MozRank. Part of the reason is that the algorithm that calculates MozRank has been better improved over the years. You can still see External MozRank metrics, but they are hard to find. To do so, you need to use the Open Site Intelligence API.
It takes some technical know-how, but once you get the hang of it you can access all kinds of special metrics.
But this is more work than most people really need in thier lives. For the most part, if you concentrate on Page and Domain Authority, you should be just fine.
And we really need to update those descriptions. Thanks for the heads up!

Moz-Specific 404 Errors Jumped with URLs that don't exist
Hello, I'm going to try and be as specific as possible concerning this weird issue, but I'd rather not say specific info about the site unless you think it's pertinent. So to summarize, we have a website that's owned by a company that is a division of another company. For reference, we'll say that: OURSITE.com is owned by COMPANY1 which is owned by AGENCY1 This morning, we got about 7,000 new errors in MOZ only (these errors are not in Search Console) for URLs with the company name or the agency name at the end of the url. So, let's say one post is: OURSITE.com/the-article/ This morning we have an error in MOZ for URLs OURSITE.com/the-article/COMPANY1 OURSITE.com/the-article/AGENCY1 x 7000+ articles we have created. Every single post ever created is now an error in MOZ because of these two URL additions that seem to come out of nowhere. These URLs are not in our Sitemaps, they are not in Google... They simply don't exist and yet MOZ created an an error with them. Unless they exist and I don't see them. Obviously there's a link to each company and agency site on the site in the about us section, but that's it.

Setting up MOZ to run on Staging
Hi Moz, We would like to setup Moz to run on our Staging Server. This would be extremely valuable as it alerts us to new SEO issues/risks in a controlled and secure environment that is not exposed to production. Our internal team has recommended potentially setting up a reverse proxy server that will validate either via Moz's/Rogerbot's http header or IP and allow Moz access to our Staging environment to crawl. Is this something that we can setup with Moz? Are there other ideas to enable Moz to crawl our Staging server?

Search Volume in Keyword Rankings Page
Is there a way to show search volumes for keywords in the Keyword Rankings tab page? A lot of times keywords we are ranking for are added to our campaign, and it would be very useful to see the search volumes within that grid. That way we could sort by the search volume and determine which keywords are worth targeting and optimizing for. I've had this ability with other software in the past and would be a great option for either Moz Pro version or the new Beta that is coming out. Which I'm still waiting for my invite BTW:)

OK I'll try again.... Linking root domains and external links
I'm new to the crawl test tool, I think I know what is meant by external links and linking root domains but I need to check. If there are 500 external links and 50 linking root domains does that suggest the essentially those 500 links are coming from 50 root domains? If yes, then what would 1000 linking root domains and 100 links mean? Or am I completely wrong in my assumptions and if so, can somebody point me in the right direction? Thank you.
