Duplicate internal links on page, any benefit to nofollow
-
Link spam is naturally a hot topic amongst SEO's, particularly post Penguin. While digging around forums etc, I watched a video blog from Matt Cutts posted a while ago that suggests that Google only pays attention to the first instance of a link on the page
As most websites will have multiple instances of a links (header, footer and body text), is it beneficial to nofollow the additional instances of the link?
Also as the first instance of a link will in most cases be within the header nav, does that then make the content link text critical or can good on page optimisation be pulled from the title attribute?
I would appreciate the experiences and thoughts Mozzers thoughts on this
thanks in advance!

Thanks Maximise and Sven, both very informative answers.
I have changed the question to a discussion as it seems there may be no definitive answer to the above, so look forward to hopefully seeing further input from the Moz community.

Hi Justin,
I think you raise a very good point. It is known that nofollow links 'leak' linkjuice, because the linkjuice is not passed through the link, but it isn't distributed to other links on the same page either. The juice that would have been passed through a follow link simply vanishes when you add a nofollow tag.
As you said it is also suggested that Google does not count multiple instances of one link on one page. So the question that remains is: Are the second, third etc. instances of links treated as nofollow links (leaking linkjuice), or are they simply ignored (not leaking linkjuice)?
If they are treated as nofollow links and leak linkjuice anyway, you might as well add a nofollow-tag and make sure you don't get penalized for them either. On the other hand, if they are normally simply ignored by Google, but start leaking linkjuice with a nofollow tag, you might be doing some serious damage to your site.
Quite frankly, I don't know which is the case. However, my gut feeling says that the pagerank sculpting days are over so the above reasoning might not be the way to think about this.
I would simply try not to 'overdo' anything to much. Don't have pages with 200+ links all linking to perfectly optimised pages with perfectly optimised anchors. I suspect that internal linking is not the driving factor behind Penguin penalties anyway, but backlinks are.
Looking forward to see what other people think!
Greets,
Sven Witteveen

I think they only pay attention to the anchor text of the first link, this would stop people from stuffing multiple links to the same page each targeting a different term. So if you have a few text links to the same page make sure the first one contains your primary key phrase.
Nofollowing the rest of the links wouldn't have any positive effect. The total link juice a page can pass on is divided by the total number of links on the page (regardless of follow or nofollow). In fact it can have a slightly negative effect as the juice from the nofollow links essentially evaporates instead of being passed to other pages on your site. Here is an article on how this works.

Crawling/indexing of near duplicate product pages
Hi, Hope someone can help me out here. This is the current situation: We sell stones/gravel/sand/pebbles etc. for gardens. I will take a type of pebbles and the corresponding pages/URL's to illustrate my question --> black beach pebbles. We have a 'top' product page for black beach pebbles on which you can find different types of quantities (differing from 20kg untill 1600 kg). There is not any search volume related to the different quantities The 'top' page does not link to the pages for the different quantities The content on the pages for the different quantities is not exactly the same (different price + slightly different content). But a lot of the content is the same. Current situation:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AMAGARD
- Most pages for the different quantities do not have internal links (about 95%) But the sitemap does contain all of these pages. Because the sitemap contains all these URL's, google frequently crawls them (I checked the logfiles) and has indexed them. Problems: Google spends its time crawling irrelevant pages --> our entire website is not that big, so these quantity URL's kind of double the total number of URL's. Having url's in the sitemap that do not have an internal link is a problem on its own All these pages are indexed so all sorts of gravel/pebbles have near duplicates. My solution: remove these URL's from the sitemap --> that will probably stop Google from regularly crawling these pages Putting a canonical on the quantity pages pointing to the top-product page. --> that will hopefully remove the irrelevant (no search volume) near duplicates from the index My questions: To be able to see the canonical, google will need to crawl these pages. Will google still do that after removing them from the sitemap? Do you agree that these pages are near duplicates and that it is best to remove them from the index? A few of these quantity pages do have intenral links (a few procent of them) because of a sale campaign. So there will be some (not much) internal links pointing to non-canonical pages. Would that be a problem? Thanks a lot in advance for your help! Best!1 -
Breadcrumbs and internal links
Hello, I use to move up my site structure with links in content. I have now installed breadcrumbs, is it is useful to still keep the links in content or isn't there a need to duplicate those links ? and are the breadcrumbs links enough. Thank you,

To nofollow or follow internal links, that is the question...
"...Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or..." Okay, I'll drop the Hamlet riff. I'm working on a site with a forum. Top pages may have 20 to 30 answers. Each answer is by a member with an image/link and a name link to their member profile. A member profile may contain alot of info or none. We've noiondexed memeber profile pages, yet we still have these links to member profile pages. Is it better to nofollow these internal links to profile pages or what? Again, with 25 answers on a page and two links per answer to each member profile (image and name), that's a ton of internal links to noindexed pages. Thanks! Best... Darcy

Internal links and URL shortners
Hi guys, what are your thoughts using bit.ly links as internal links on blog posts of a website? Some posts have 4/5 bit.ly links going to other pages of our website (noindexed pages). I have nofollowed them so no seo value is lost, also the links are going to noindexed pages so no need to pass seo value directly. However what are your thoughts on how Google will see internal links which have essential become re-direct links? They are bit.ly links going to result pages basically. Am I also to assume the tracking for internal links would also be better using google analytics functionality? is bit.ly accurate for tracking clicks? Any advice much appreciated, I just wanted to double check this.

Artist Bios on Multiple Pages: Duplicate Content or not?
I am currently working on an eComm site for a company that sells art prints. On each print's page, there is a bio about the artist followed by a couple of paragraphs about the print. My concern is that some artists have hundreds of prints on this site, and the bio is reprinted on every page, which makes sense from a usability standpoint, but I am concerned that it will trigger a duplicate content penalty from Google. Some people are trying to convince me that Google won't penalize for this content, since the intent is not to game the SERPs. However, I'm not confident that this isn't being penalized already, or that it won't be in the near future. Because it is just a section of text that is duplicated, but the rest of the text on each page is original, I can't use the rel=canonical tag. I've thought about putting each artist bio into a graphic, but that is a huge undertaking, and not the most elegant solution. Could I put the bio on a separate page with only the artist's info and then place that data on each print page using an <iframe>and then put a noindex, nofollow in the robots.txt file?</p> <p>Is there a better solution? Is this effort even necessary?</p> <p>Thoughts?</p></iframe>

Best practice to avoid cannibalization of internal pages
Hi everyone, I need help from the best SEO guys regarding a common issue : the cannibalization of internal pages between each other. Here is the case : Let's say I run the website CasualGames.com. This website provides free games, as well as articles and general presentation about given categories of Casual Games. For instance, for the category "Sudoku Games", the structure will be : Home page of the game : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/ Free sudoku game listings : (around 100 games listed) http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/free/ A particular sudoku game : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/free/game-1/ A news regarding sudoku games : http://www.casualgames.com/sudoku/news/title The problem is that these pages seem to "cannibalize" each other. Explanation : In the SERPS, for the keyword "Casual Games", the home page doesn't appear well ranked and some specific sudoku games page (one of the 100 games) are better ranked although they are "sub-pages" of the category.. Same for the news pages : a few are better ranked than the category page.. I am kind of lost.. Any idea what would be the best practice in this situation? THANKS a LOT.
