Quote "There is no SEO software that can help optimize a site"
-
Hi all
I am a developer for a small agency in the UK. I am using SEOmoz for a couple of our clients and I am also using it to learn from. So far I am finding it a great tool and this forum is also incredibly helpful.
Now I also visit another forum called HighRankings.com and this months newsletter is a list of points that are defined as "SEO Mistakes". In it, point number 2 reads:
"Repeat after me: There is no specific number of times a keyword phrase should be used in my content. There is no magic number of words that my pages should have written on them. And there is no best number of words or phrases that belong in a Title tag. And most of all: There is no SEO software that can optimize my website (despite the claims of their creators).
Use your common sense to optimize your site! Learn how your target audience searches for products, services and information such as yours, and write about it accordingly on your website. Then write to make an emotional connection with your visitors so that they'll convert into happy customers."
Now as a user of SEOmoz I wondered what others thought of this comment?
Many thanks for reading.

Many Thanks Rand (and Geoff).
The thoughts and opinions of other SEO community members (and CEO's!) who have "walked the walk" is priceless advice in my opinion.

Hi Kris - I think I'd just generally disagree with the sentiment expressed in the newsletter (despite usually being a HighRankings fan - I subscribed to their newsletter for years).
Well... Maybe.
SEOmoz's software can't literally optimize your site for you, but managing campaigns, monitoring critical stats that aren't available elsewhere (rankings + link data + social data + traffic data + crawl stats) can be extremely helpful in ID'ing SEO issues and opportunities.
I suppose when they say "There is no SEO software that can optimize my website" it's correct on a literal sense, so perhaps we do agree after all. However, I think there's lots of good ways software can make marketers more efficient and effective than they'd otherwise be.
Hope that helps!

They aren't software, there is a difference. But I appreciate opinions differ.
I was going to send you to the Google search results for 'SEO Software', I then noticed that SEOmoz rank and they make use of the page title 'SEO Software Simplified' so I feel pretty foolish now.
In my opinion, there is a distinct difference between what I refer to as 'seo software' and a collection of tools that each carry out a specific process to give useful insight into just one area. The tools provide users with data to then go away and work with by whatever means necessary whereas software is generally a suite with features that attempt to automate much of the 'optimisation' process.
Having spoken to Jill at HR on a number of occassions previously and being quite active within the High Rankings forum and Sphinn community previously, I'm pretty certain they are of the same mindset of myself and not perceiving SEOmoz as 'seo software' as such.
Be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on this of course...

Hi Geoff
So would you say SEOmoz (or its tools) are not SEO Software? Personally I would (even though it's not software in the terms of being natively installed software) however it is a tool to help analyize and optimize a website is it not?
My reason for posting was simply because I have used HighRankings for a long time as a base of information and reading that article made me disagree with what they are saying. There is SEO software (or tools) that will help you optimize your website (or at least suggest optimizing methods) and I was surprised to see they think otherwise.
SEOmoz, MajesticSEO, gShiftLabs etc...

Hi Kris,
SEOmoz provide tools to assist you in analysing and identifying issues within your site and its pages. It doesn't provide "SEO software" as such. Most agencies/seo's will use a range of tools to aid their workflow, there is nothing wrong with that.
What HighRankings are referring to is automated garbage that claims to build you 10,000 backlinks while you sleep or at a click of a button it will tell you how more times you have to mention keywords a,b and c to rank for them - it's all mindless nonsense but people to still fall for it and purchase the software.
The bottom line is, there are no shortcuts or cheats with SEO, provide quality that people want, cater for your intended audience and engage with your end users. Everything else from thereon is almost a given (providing you have a decent designer and developer that knows what they are doing looking after your website).
Hope that clears that up...?

Can you separate keywords in body text?
Keyword example "Best Chocolate Donuts" Could your keywords be written as "If you are always looking for the best quality ingredients, and you are a chocolate lover, you will love our donuts" Does that satisfy the keyword requirement or does it have to be exactly " We have the best chocolate donuts Chicago has to offer"

How do I combat title tag issues in Moz because of long company/site name? [Currently using Yoast SEO Plugin]
I've only just started to dip my toe into the SEO pool, so please forgive me if this is a silly question. I've been working heavily in the Moz tool and the Yoast SEO plugin to clean up the meta descriptions on our site, as there were many pages without descriptions in place (we just transferred from a different CMS to Wordpress within the last month or so). Now I'm noticing on our Site Crawl that we have 60+ pages that have title elements that are considered too long. When I go in to fix these issues on our blog posts (as this is where most of the issues lie), Yoast is already giving me the green light on the title lengths. I've discovered that the reason why Moz is telling us that many of our site lengths are too long is because "| Parker Staffing Services" is added to the end of our title tags automatically. Deep breath Now that you've heard all of the backstory... Is there a way that I can prevent that site title (which is 26 characters all by itself! Talk about limiting!) from displaying on search engines when our blog posts or pages show up in search results? I've poked around in the Titles & Metas settings that come with Yoast, but I fear making too many changes will result in me screwing something up. Help an SEO beginner out? 🙂

SEO Moz Rank Report
Anyone else noticing the rank reporting seems to be off? My reports are showing "not in top 50" for some keywords that my site is on page one for. Not in places listings either because I know that can throw things off! Anyone?

SEO moz Report Card
I just ran some on page report cards. As I was playing around with the tool I noticed that I would get different results if I used my primary domain vs a 2nd domain. The main difference was in how the tool was counting keywords on the page. The keyword used was 'vehicle inventory' Primary domain: www.brand-state.com/inventory.htm Title = 1, URL = 0, Meta = 1, H1 = 1, H2-4 = 1 Body =1, Strong = 1, IMG Alt = 1 Total = 7 2nd domain: www.company-name-brand.com/inventory.htm Title = 1, URL = 0, Meta = 1, H1 = 1, H2-4 = 2 Body =5, Strong = 4, IMG Alt = 2 Total = 13 I can understand if the keyword was in the domain, but it's not. So I'm wondering what is going on here - any help or suggestions on what to research would be a great help. Thank you!

How accurate is the MozBar "Followed Link Highlighter"
I'm currently doing some research on blogs to guest post on and I want to make sure they are providing DoFollow links out. are the green links displayed from the MozBar simply links that don't contain the HTML element "NOFOLLOW" or is it more in depth tan that? according to this article there are TONS of different ways that people can place a NOFOLLOW link on their site http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/identify-nofollow-juiceless-links-guide.html Thanks

For the "On Page Report Card", Can I see a list of all of the recommendations?
On the "On Page Repord Card", in the "Page Analysis Detail" section, I can click "Read More" for each factor and see a "Recommendation" on how to fix the page to meet that factors criteria. Are these recommendations the same everytime or will they vary depending on the page itself? Can get a copy of each recommendation that would appear if none of the criteria were met? Thanks, Daniel.

"Opt Out" of free month through MozPoints
This is probably going to sound a bit strange but I'd like it if I could "opt out" of the 200 MozPoints in a month giving a free months worth of membership. The reason being that I am enjoying using the forum but feel like every time I click on a thumbs up for my stuff to get MozPoints, it's like I'm trying to take advantage of the offer... when in actual fact I have no interest in that. Don't get me wrong, I want MozPoints because I want an SEOmoz t-shirt lol, and maybe one day I'll get to find out what the "something really special" is (I don't want to have one of whatever it is, I just want to know what it is.... the curiosity is killing me!) Anyway, what I'm saying is that I would feel more free to use the forums without having this kind of uncomfortable feeling that it may look like I'm just in it for the points to skimp on cash lol. I use the service, I love the service, and so I am happy to pay for the service... not only that but the forums are part of the benefit of the service, so I'd rather not worry that every comment I make may look like I'm doing it for reasons of greed, rather than reasons of interest. So, can we have a thing where we opt out?
