Canonical Question
-
Our site has thousands of items, however using the old "Widgets" analogy we are unsure on how to implement the canonical tag, and if we need to at all.
At the moment our main product pages lists all different "widget" products on one page, however the user can visit other sub pages that filter out the different versions of the product.
I.e. glass widgets (20 products)
glass blue widgets (15 products)
glass red widgets (5 products)
etc....I.e. plastic widgets (70 products)
plastic blue widgets (50 products)
plastic red widgets (20 products)
etc....As the sub pages are repeating products from the main widgets page we added the canonical tag on the sub pages to refer to the main widget page. The thinking is that Google wont hit us with a penalty for duplicate content.
As such the subpages shouldnt rank very well but the main page should gather any link juice from these subpages?
Typically once we added the canonical tag it was coming up to the penguin update, lost a 20%-30% of our traffic and its difficult not to think it was the canonical tag dropping our subpages from the serps.
Im tempted to remove the tag and return to how the site used to be repeating products on subpages.. not in a seo way but to help visitors drill down to what they want quickly.
Any comments would be welcome..

Thanks, as i thought the issue is something that cannot be answered until its done. I am going to leave the tag in for the moment as we are still ranking for keywords.
Will however watch traffic closely and compare over next to previous landing pages.
Thanks for the comment.

Technically, Google doesn't recommend the canonical tag in these situations, but it's a gray area. They do say that you can set a canonical to the "View All" version in paginated search results, and you've got something similar here - each sub-page is a sub-set of the full results.
Other options are to simply META NOINDEX the break-down pages or tell Google to ignore the parameters in GWT. Unfortunately, it really depends a lot on the situation and URL/crawl structure, so it's a bit hard to speak in generalities.
I'd be very surprised if this caused you any kind of Penguin problems. I've seen bad canonicalization cause problems in general, but it's probably just coincidental timing here. The biggest risk would be if you had direct traffic/links to the sub-pages. The canonical should pass most of the link-juice, but if a lot of people were running queries like "glass blue widgets" and "plastic red widgets" then canonicalizing those back up to the root page may have weakened your ranking ability.
It's a tough call - often, cleaning up these kinds of near-duplicate pages can be helpful, but it really depends a lot on your audiences and the nature of your traffic. Can you isolate the lost traffic? See if it was coming directly to these deeper pages or via long-tail keywords. If it was, it's very likely cutting off these pages caused some harm. If you've lost ranking on broad keywords or across all pages, then I suspect something else is going on.

Hi - I have a question about IP addresses
- would it hurt link juice to host a blog on a different server to the rest of your website? I have a web host saying they can't run Wordpress as they won't support PHP for "security reasons" - one solution would be to set up Wordpress on a different server and redirect domain.com/blog there (I presume this is do-able?). But I don't know if that affects the SEO adversely?

Questions about canonicals
Howdy Moz community, I had a question regarding canonicals. I help a business with their SEO, and they are a service company. They have one physical location, but they serve multiple cities in the state. My question is in regards to canonicals and unique content. I hear that a page with slightly differing content for each page won't matter as much, if most of the content is relevantly the same. This business wants to create service pages for at least 10 other cities they service. The site currently only have pages that are targeting one city location. I was wondering if it was beneficial to use a template to service each city and then put a canonical there to say that it is an identical page to the main city page? Example: our first city was san francisco, we want to create city pages for santa rosa, novato, san jose and etc. If the content for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, city were the same content as the 1st city, but just had the slight change with the city name would that hurt? Would putting a canonical help this issue, if i alert that it is the same as the 1st page? The reason I want to do this, is because I have been getting concerns from my copywriter that after the 5th city, they can't seem to make the services pages that much different from the first 4 cities, in terms of wording of the content and its structure. I want to know is there a simpler way to target multiple cities for local SEO reasons like geo targeted terms without having to think of a completely new way to write out the same thing for each city service page, as this is very time consuming on my end. Main questions? Will making template service pages, changing the city name to target different geographic locations and putting a canonical tag for the new pages created, and referring back to the main city page going to be effective in terms of me wanting to rank for multiple cities. Will doing this tell google my content is thin or be considered a duplicate? Will this hurt my rankings? Thanks!

301 redirect Question
Hi all, I have a client who has a domain lets say www.xyz.de which is redirected 301 to www.zyx.de. Now they're working on a relaunch and they want to use the www.xyz.de as their origibnal doman after that. So, at the end the www.zyx.de - which is indexed by Google - should be redirected to www.xyz.de. It vice versa. So the redirect becomes the original and the original becomes the redirect 😕 Is there anything we have to care off? Or will that run into the hell? Thanx. Seb.

Questions about the Sandbox and 301 Redirects
Does the sandbox still exist? What if you have a brand new URL and do a 301 redirect from another website because the name of the service business changed? Thanks for any insight and help.

Adding Rel Canonical to multiple pages
Hi, Our CMS generates a lot of duplicate content, (Different versions of every page for 3 different font sizes). There are many other reasons why we should drop this current CMS and go with something else, and we are in the process of doing that. But for now, does anyone know how would I do the following: I've created a spreadsheet that contains the following: Column 1: rel="canonical" tag for URL Column 2: Duplicate Content URL # 1 Column 3: Duplicate Content URL # 2 Column 4: Duplicate Content URL # 3 I want to add the tag from column 1 into the head of every page from column 2,3, and 4. What would be a fast way to do this considering that I have around 1800 rows. Check the screenshot of the builtwith.com result to see more information about the website if that helps. Farris bxySL

Canonical tag, CNAME and 301 redirect
I have a website with a couple of domains pointing to one IP address. Let's say I have two domains www.example.com and www.example.ca I also see during my SEO analysis that the example.com and the www.example.com (same for the example.ca and the www.example.ca) are triggering server responses. How do I deal with this issue for best SEO. Canonical links? CNAME, or 301 redirects? thanks
