Rebuilding a site with pre-existing high authority subdomains
-
I'm rebuilding a real estate website with 4 subdomains that have Page Authorities between 45 and 50.
Since it's a real estate website it has 20,000+ pages of unique (listing) content PER sub-domain.
The subdomains are structured like: washington.xyzrealty.com and california.xyzrealty.com.
The root domain has a ~50 Page Authority.
The site is about 7 years old.
My preference is to focus all of my efforts on the primary domain going forward, but I don't want to waste the power of the subdomains.
I'm considering:
1. Putting blogs or community/city pages on the subdomains
2. 301 redirecting all of the existing pages to matching pages on the new root domain.
3. Any other ideas??

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the help!
I think we have a lot of deep links to specific city pages. I am concerned about losing that juice, but I guess the 301's will mitigate that somewhat.
The site isn't built in frames.
I don't think people have many pages bookmarked.
I'm not 100% sure I fully understand your solution, but I'm still left feeling that I don't have a solid idea of which direction to go.
Best,
~jon

Given it is a real estate site, here is how we would proceed.
We would use 301's in the .htaccess file from url to url. One issue with RE is that your listing content changes so you may not want to go to the trouble of making the change on listings that have previously sold unless you are wanting the archived data to be seen for a reason. (In TX only RE brokers and agents can access past sales data - don't get me started )
Now, if your sub domains are such that people have them bookmarked or have specific reasons for going to them versus your new site, you could add a blog, etc. You would lose the links going from pertinent urls, but it would be over time and, if you kept fresh content along with adding new links, you may find one to be beneficial. It is really a judgement call for you and a work/benefit call. Some RE sites utilize Iframes to bring the data in so you need to be aware of any limitations around that. We handle a some RE sites in TX and there are issues as the result of MLS systems being on IFrames and being tied to Explorer as the only usable browser.
Hope this helps a bit.

Combining Two Sites With Similar Domain Authority
Hello, We run two sites with the same product, product descriptions and url structure. Essentially, the two sites are the same except for domain name and minor differences on the home pages. We've run this way for quite a few years. Both sites have a domain authority of 48 and there are not a large number of duplicate incoming links. I understand the "book" to say we should combine the sites with 301's to the similar pages. I am concerned about doing this because "site 2" still does about 20% of our business. We have been losing organic traffic for a number of years. I think this mainly has to do with a more competitive environment. However, where google used to serve both our sites for a search term it now will only show one. How much organic benefit should we see if we combine. Will it be significant enough to merge the two sites. Understandably, I realize the future can't be predicted but I would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience or opinion Thanks

Subdomain or Subfolder for Locations?
I have a client who is ranking #1 for every term related to "bathroom renovations (main city)". They have now started to take on dealers/franchisees in neighbouring cities, and each location would now like to be ranking for THEIR cities. Is it better to use bathcompany.com/location or location.bathcompany.com? Considerations: The site has the address and phone number of the main location listed in the header, so if we do /location you will still see the main NAP. Using /location, If someone browses beyond the location landing page, they will venture into pages that target the main city (ex. "Bath Remodelling (Main City)") Using a subdomain will mean that we will need to duplicate content such as their image gallery, and we will have to create new content for their service pages or risk duplicate content. (ex. "shower remodelling (city)") Questions By using /location they will benefit from the strength of the subdomain, while using a new location-based subdomain will this mean we will have to start from scratch in terms of domain authority / link-juice? Will the NAP in the header affect the ranking of these location pages?

Pros and Cons of new subdomain and redirecting old subdomain?
Hi guys, I am thinking about redirecting the ranking subdoman to a new subdomain which has my main keyword within it. I am trying to outrank an exact match competitor and don't seem to be able to do so. For example: page.example.com would be my existing ranking URL which is very powerful, and I am thinking about redirecting this to a new URL being keywordpage.example.com What are your thoughts on do this? Thanks B

Press Release Sites
Ok, I am getting a lot of conflicting information about press release sites. i have been doing press release's for a while (mostly manually), I have also tried a few companies that claim to do it well (never do). After the Panda update the PR sites I have been using are just not as effective. Does anyone else have this problem or are there better PR sites that can be recommended.

I have a website: www.letsflycheaper.com with a Domain Authority of 80, and my target keywords are keywords like: cheap business class, business class flights.
My target page is: www.letsflycheaper.com/business-class.php. With all my keywords I am page 2 and I have a real hard time getting on the first page, but if I look at my competitors like: www.wholesale-flights.com with a Domain Authority of 'just' 50, crappy backlinks and so on, they are all on the first page with almost all of my keywords that I want to target. What do I do wrong? Can you maybe give me a couple tips on where I should focus on more? Hopefully you guys can help me... Kind Regards, Ramon van Meer0
