Canonical or 301 redirect, that is the question?
-
So my site has duplicate content issues because of the index.html and the www and non www version of the site. What's the best way to deal with this without htaccess? Is it a 301 redirect or is it the canonical, or is it both?
-
No problem! I'm curious what solution you are planning to choose and of course, if it helped you rank higher.. although that sort of data will only be available in a couple of months of course.

I'd agree that, theoretically, 301-redirects are better here, but if it's just the home-page, a canonical tag can definitely sweep up any problem duplicates. If you're getting www and non-www versions of multiple pages indexed, then you probably need 301s. I'd check the index with the site: operator and see. If you're really getting multiples of both indexed, you probably have internal linking issues (inconsistencies). Step 1 in any de-duplication is to make sure you're always linking to the same version. Same with "index.html" - link to "/" internally or the absolute URL of the site (without "index.html").
PHP (code-based) redirects should be fine, as long as they resolve correctly. I've used code-based headers in some other languages (like ColdFusion) and it's generally been ok. If that gets messy, though, and if it's just the home-page, the canonical tag will do in a pinch.

Thanks for your tips.

I would say 301 redirect. e.g. in PHP you can use:
/home.html to /
if ($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] == '/home.html') {
header('HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently');
header('Location: /');
}
non-www to www
**if ($_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] == 'example.com') **{
header('HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently');
header('Location: www.example.com' . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']);
}
Good luck!

what about using a php 301 redirect? is that also a good option? I'm looking for the simplest solution that doesn't mess up my seo efforts.
Thank you

Hi Joel!
Googles recommendation for this is a 301 redirect.
If you need to change the URL of a page as it is shown in search engine results, we recommended that you use a server-side 301 redirect.

In other case, if you dont have access to do it server-side, then a canonical is better then nothing.
Good luck!

Hi Joel,
I'd say a 301 redirect using your HTaccess file is best. However, if you cannot access the htaccess file i'd go with the rel canonical. Otherwise you would be using meta refresh or javascript and the like, which are generally not appreciated by Google. Besides, if the page is truly a duplicate the canonical link tag usually does the trick anyway!
Good luck,
Sven Witteveen

Preserve domain on 301 redirect?
We have a domain solely used for print advertising that does a 301 redirect to a landing page (a department home page) on our "real" domain that is indexed on Google. Example: www.bmwrepairs.com redirects to www.repairshop.com/bmwrepairs. Is there a way to do a 301 redirect so that when they get redirected, the URL in the browser address bar remains www.bmwrepairs.com?

Duplicate content reported on WMT for 301 redirected content
We had to 301 redirect a large number of URL's. Not Google WMT is telling me that we are having tons of duplicate page titles. When I looked into the specific URL's I realized that Google is listing an old URL's and the 301 redirected new URL as the source of the duplicate content. I confirmed the 301 redirect by using a server header tool to check the correct implementation of the 301 redirect from the old to the new URL. Question: Why is Google Webmaster Tool reporting duplicated content for these pages?

Best time to choose a canonical URL & 301 redirect
I have taken on the task of getting a fairly huge eCommerce site more SEO friendly & have just realized that no URL has been chosen as our preferred domain. Should we designate a preferred domain now or wait until after the first of the year since we are hitting our busy period right now?

Embed Same Video On Multiple Pages or 301 Redirect Into 1?
I have 3 pages that rank VERY well for related terms such as: -How to get widgets -How to become a widget -Getting widgets -etc. I am incorporating a video on the topic and rewriting much of the content on the site. I am wondering if it is wise to 301 redirect all 3 pages to 1 page that has the new/better video content or if I should leave the old content that is ranking well and embed the video on the top of each. The anal retentive side of me wants a nice new site structure and 1 powerful page. However, if the 3 pages are currently ranking (sometimes 2 pages in the same top 10 results), should I mess with what is working? Ultimately my goal is to increase the avg time on site as these 3 pages are top traffic pages for the site. However, they do not convert at all, as they are for a product we don't offer. Thoughts?

Redirecting, then redirecting back
Hey, mozzers! My first question ever... I have a client who has (fictitionally) WickerPatioHomeStore.com, which features wicker home decor. Not too long ago, they wanted a shorter, easier URL, so they redirected to another domain they own, WickerPatio.com (again, fictional). They saw somewhat of a drop in traffic, and wonder if there's a correlation with the words "home store" not being in their domain any more. When considering the two, I figure that relevant factors would be age of domains, history of content of the domains, and inbound links to each domain. Any thoughts on other things to consider? Thanks very much!! ~ Scott

Does 301 Redirect works on social signals?
Hello, I'm considering strategic change in my site's formation.

301 redirecting some of the pages is not a problem but the question remains - what will happen with all of my social signals? These pages have Likes, plus ones, and tweets. Thanks0 -
Canonical / 301 Redundancy
Suppose I have two dynamic URLs that lead to the identical page: www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 and www.example.com/product.php?y=1 The x=1 parameter had some historical meaning, but is now unused. All references to the x=1 parameter have been removed from internal links and sitemaps. I have implemented two solutions: First, the header of www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 includes: Second, the .htaccess file includes the following: Redirect permanent /product.php?x=1&y=1 http://www.example.com/product.php?y=1 Questions: 1. I assume that since canonical is still relatively new, it's best to play it safe and implement both solutions. Is this correct? 2. When I point my browser to www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1, it does NOT redirect to www.example.com/product.php?y=1. The address bar continues to show the non-canonical URL. Is this because the canonical tag somehow takes precedence over the 301 redirect? 3. How long will Google Webmaster Tools continue to show these as duplicates, even though I've implemeted BOTH canonical and 301? It's been a few weeks and I thought it would have rolled off by now. Thanks!
