Anchor Text Distribution and Link Profile Best Practices
-
Hi,
Since Penguin is about regulating link building, here are my questions:
- How many percent of a site's overall links should be branded terms?
- How many percent of a site's overall links should be related to the site?
- How many percent of a site's overall links should have nofollow?
- Any recommendation on anchor text distribution?
Lastly
- In your opinion, which e-commerce site you think has the best link profile?
Thanks!

To be honest I think the best thing to do is look at the back link profiles of big e-commerce websites for your direct niche.
If you look at the link profile for Amazon for example it may be too diverse.
Also giving an exact number of no follows or do follows for links and also the exact numbers is going to be hard every one is going to use different numbers, my advice look at your e-commerce niches, work out who is doign well and reverse engineer what they are going, you can get an estimate on all your above figures by looking at the top 10 websites for your niche.

Inbound link is follow link but we put no follow link back - is it beneficial for rankings?
Dear Moz Community, We are operating in a niche market, where there are not so many content marketing options. What we are left with are link exchanging with relevant sites that are on the same topic but to not directly compete with us. Now we know that if we link back to site A and site a links back to us - for google this is not a very good link. But, some of the sites we are exchanging links with, do not know the term follow vs no follow links. My question - if your link is to site A is a no follow link but they give us a follow link - does it mean thats a better option than a follow vs follow. Thanks for help!

Should I ask sites that link to me to update links that redirect?
I have found some links to my site that go through a single 301 redirect to get to my site. Should I contact these websites to ask them to update the link, or is that not worth the time?

Our anchor-text profile is natural, but looks spammy, what to do?
We are a site with about 12 directories, each one in a sub-folder and previously had their own URL which we merged together for increased branding efforts. When I was analyzing our anchor-text profile of our study abroad directory, it seems that the anchor-text profile is heavy on your key keywords, such as 'Study Abroad' and then some branded. When I say heavy, I am talking 88% are 'study abroad'; followed by 4% are branded, and 2% are branded the old URL that is 301'd to the new subfolder. We have never bought links nor have we really had a strong link building strategy. I am currently thinking of disavowing the links with low DA and are part of the heavily used (study abroad) keywords. Is this a good idea? What should we do to show that these are natural links?

What is the best way to get links now ?
I have been working for a long time in the industry now and I was away for some time. It seems that now after the google updates..It is difficult to do link building. I used to do quality white hat link exchange to very related sites. For example, I own a travel site about Paris (www.simplyparis.org) and I would exchange links with other travel sites about France or/and Paris. It was good for the visitors and SEO.. Now what is the best link building technique ? What should I do to promote my site now?

Should we Have Our Anchor Text Changed?
Unfortunately, we used a SEO company to do some link building for us and they used a lot of marketed keywords as anchor text instead of branded. About a month into the project, we saw a drop in ranking for those keywords. From what I've read, Google is cracking down on marketed keywords in anchor text (when it is done in a spammy looking way). I have contacted the company that did the work and they said they could update the anchor text. So my questions are: Should we asked them to change the anchor text to branded keywords or should we just leave them? 2) If we do have them changed, do you think Google will look at that as another spammy move? Any input would be great. Lesson learned not to used a reputable SEO company and for us not to monitor how they were submitting links. Ron

How might Google differentiate between an artificial link exchange and partners linking to each other?
Hi, All! Artificial link exchanges (contacting a vaguely connected site and requesting to exchange links to increase your PR) is, as far as I know, considered an outdated, not-so-smart technique, as Google might devalue them. Yet, for real business partners to exchange links seems to be an entirely accepted and encouraged technique. While that would be intuitive to a human who's viewing the pages. how might Google detect when two sites that link to each other are linking because they are trusted business associates (valuable) as opposed to when they are doing a link exchange (devalued)? Thanks! Aviva
