Drop in the external links
-
Hi,
We notice a sudden drop in our external links over a month (May to June). The numbers have fallen drastically from ~55K to ~28K.The followed linking root domains has changed from 781 to 776. I am using OSE to download the inbound links data an analyse, however the downloaded csv lists only about 25 links from every domain so I am unable to figure how we have lost the external links over time.
But, the Domain Mozrank has seen a gradual increase. Now I suspect the reason for the DA of our site to fall from 58 to 57 is mainly because of the external links loss. Am I right in assuming this?
Is there a way to figure out the lost links?
Please help!
Thanks,
-
It's pretty common to see fluctuation like this from one Linkscape index to the next. Also, SEOmoz is constantly working to improve the index, and from time to time changes the way it crawls the web.
Domain Authority is calculated fresh with each new update, and it's a comparative metric based on other sites on the web. This means it's better to compare your DA to your competition with each update, than to compare small fluctuation against yourself from month to month.
To your point about OSE - to improve efficiency, OSE only records the first 25 links for every domain because after the first few links, each additional link makes very little difference in rankings or correlation data.

Great, thanks!

I found that majesticSEO picked up most of the links from these sources, although you may not find all of them. Export all the data you can if you have majesticSEO, I think aHrefs will also pick this data up.

Thanks for the quick reply, Malcolm. That's a relief! The rankings have been more or less consistent.
Is there a way to get a complete list of the links for further analysis?

I've noticed a drop in external links for some clients too. I wouldn't worry about it, it is the fallout from Penguin/Panda where Google has devalued certain links. Those 30k links or so that came from 5 domains could have been sitewide blogroll links or footer links of low quality that Google has removed from their index.
I would assume your right about DA, but I wouldn't worry about it that much unless your rankings are seeing a massive shift.

On my latest report we have dropped one point on Domain authority. I also note that our 3 competitor rankings have dropped as well. Has something changed to make this occur.

Old links
I am looking to remove some old directory links that now look spammy. Some years ago the site was redesigned. The links are all to the old pages url, which is 301 redirected to the new. If we remove the 301 and let the page 404, will that suffice in Googles eyes?

How to Define Quality of External Website During Link Building?
I want to know about process, method or tool which can help me to define quality of external website during link building. We are searching too many questions and topics on Google to resolve daily mind bubbles which land us on different website with different subject. I found that, I was able to drop my website URL over there but confuse about quality of website. I am selling Football and create external link from baby care website. So, will it make sense? My concern is that, Can we create external links from different subject website or specific to subject oriented website? Is there any specific method which help me to understand more about external website and help me to take decision about link building?

Can changing our links page make our rankings drop through the floor?
Hi all, When I first started at my current job, most of the link building (aside from submitting to free directories left, right and centre) was replying to every spammy reciprocal email and adding them to our links page! Now we're all a bit wiser about such matters (thanks SEOMoz!), I want to get our links page turned into something actually useful. My plan was to get it neatly categorised, with recommendations, cut out unrelated links that would be useless to visitors and call it something like "Our Friends" I thought this might be useful for future link building efforts, but in its current state, it's a complete mess. However, I am worried about cutting out a lot of links if they have been reciprocal ones. Are the sort of sites that would be sending typical spammy link exchange emails for window installation in NY likely to notice our UK education site taking away their link six months later and take away ours? If they do, will losing links from these sites harm us? Perhaps more importantly, is my plan a terrible idea in the first place? Look forward to hearing from y'all!
