Why Even Publish Dates for the Next OSE Data Set?
-
I just noticed on the Linkscape calendar the update that was supposed to happen yesterday is pushed back to the 6th.
It would be better not knowing. Is this a possibility? Or use the calendar internally, I don't care. Credibility in any announcement or claim looses muster once you do not do what you say you are going to do over and over again. Just a thought..

No worries, Brent. I don't think it's an attack at all. Feel free to not view the calendar.

lol, probably freshdesk after what they said about them on Twitter

Actually, a DDOS attack took Zendesk down today, it wasn't us.

Did you guys actually take it down now? Or is it just broken?

Thanks Jen.
I'm just not sold. The only reason I have a subscription anymore is to refresh out of amusement. It's sad really.
So now I will put much less weight in the dates on the calendar. Would a 5-10 day window surrounding the "next update" date be wise?
Sorry if this seems like an attack, I realize the service has many hands in on the project and you are trying to speak on behalf of many. Trying my best not to shoot the messenger here

Hi Brent!

Hey Brent,
I totally understand where you're coming from and believe me we're as frustrated by the date slipping as our customers are. We set a date to help people plan and we like to be open and transparent about the index and when it's coming out. It may seem like a good idea to not tell people when we've missed a date, but honestly that wouldn't be very TAGFEE of us.
Also, having a date on the calendar help people remember when indexes have gone out in the past. It's most definitely not perfect, but we're working very hard to get those indexes happening much faster than they currently are. We'd rather have people know what's going on, rather than wonder.
Hope that helps explain a bit!
Thanks,
Jen

So we have a rough idea when to expect the next Linkscape Update. This isn't an exact date, but more of an estimate or goal.

OSE for Facebook
Hi, I recall being able to use OSE for Facebook. Take https://www.facebook.com/VICE/ which we know as a URL would have many backlinks. It's need registering any. Has this always been the case?

OSE Domains & Subdomains
Is there a compelling reason that OSE treats subdomains as part of a parent domain, rather than as a separate site? Or is this just a technical limitation? I ask because it's my understanding that Google treats subdomains more like separate domains than like parts of the parent domain. OSE treating them more like folders creates some frustrating situations when researching niches that are heavily filled with blospot and wordpress.com blogs. First of all, the domain authority in these situations is not at all indicative of the strength of the site. It also makes it hard to evaluate linking root domains at a glance, since all blogspot blogs count as one domain. So to see all blogspot sites linking you have to go to the full link list -- where each site may be listed hundreds of times -- and you can't group them because they're all considered the same domain. To be sure you when researching these niches you can just throw out domain authority as a metric, and export every report to excel where you can sort things in a way to make it easier to separate sites. But if there isn't a compelling SEO reason to have OSE function this way, I'd love to see those subdomains treated as separate sites so I can have access to all the easy to use SEOmoz metrics and layouts without the extra work. And of course if there is a compelling SEO reason for subdomains to be treated as domains, I'd love to be educated! : )

How can you set SEOmoz to work with your dev site behind an htpasswd?
All sites need to be developed from the small to the grand - and this takes time. Development usually takes place on a subdomain different from our live domain. It is locked down behind an htpasswd during development so its not picked up by searching engines - that may create duplicate content issues if when the site goes live it has already scanned our site on the development server. Its also a security implementation to keep the site away from prying eyes before its ready for launch There could be security holes that have not been tweaked. Whats the best strategy to get SEOmoz involved in this scenario. Its tools are invaluable to the SEO part of the build - but the seomoz crawler bot has a different IP address (being cloud based) - so we cannot just let a single IP address through our htpasswd. Also is there a way to link the dev and live site in seomoz - so when it goes live to maintain all teh same logs without having to create two seperate site campaigns? Thanks!

Has anyone noticed slight drops in the Domain mozRank of their sites since the OSE update?
There's been no significant changes to their link profiles, so I'm thinking how mozRank is measured may have changed. Anyone else have this issue?

Ahead in all metrics, and not even close
For my chosen keyword(s), I rank below the #1 entry by far, am a little beneath the #2 in all metrics, but way ahead of the #3 entry in all metrics (domain authority, page authority, links, etc...). I don't even come close to the first page, however. I'm figuring there's something horribly wrong (and probably obvious) that I'm doing and just not seeing. The site in question is www.thedjbay.com and the most important keyword of choice is "tampa dj." I'm not sure if maybe there's some other metric I'm not getting, or something really bad I'm doing with my site overall. Thanks in advance for any help!
