Has anyone noticed a dramatic drop in direct visits year over year in GA across multiple sites?
-
I monitor about 10 websites in GA. Many of these sites are in a stable phase of their lifecycle. I've noticed this year that direct visits on all my sites and even friends sites have dropped by 20-60%. Has anyone seen any explanation for this or noticed this when compared to previous year? In every instance I have no penalties, notices, anything and the drop is made up completely of "direct visits".

Did you guys ever make any sense out of this?
-
Did you ever come up with any explanation for this?
-
Yes I am seeing it too. Very strange. Overall my traffic on my 3 biggest sites is up, but direct visitis is down by about 30%.
-
@jp have you come up with any possible thoughts on what it could be? I am really surprised that there aren't more people talking about this. I'm at Mozcon right now. I would like to see if someone here could answer it.

We are experiencing a similar phenomenon.
-
I didn't ask for methods. I'm looking for an explanation of why a small sample of sites has seen huge drops in direct visits. Has anyone seen this issue?
-
This does not answer my question at all. I'm not a web novice.
I don't have your resume or a list of your websites.
So, I gave you solid data and shared a method of increasing your direct visits.
Sorry you didn't like it.

This does not answer my question at all. I'm not a web novice. I've been using analytics tools for years. I know for a fact there is something going on with the reporting and someone must have seen this. Here are the industries I have seen this on.
design blog
design downloads
custom t-shirts
If you look at the current month or any month this year vs the same timeframe last year you see drops anywhere from 30-60% in directs. It is not affecting my sales. It is causing goal conversions to climb arbitrarily. These sites are not all related. I have even checked against other friends with established websites and seen the same thing. If you have a site that is in a growth mode you won't notice it. I have a site that is up 250% in organic that doesn't appear the same way. Older properties with more stable traffic and less growth are showing it.

Has anyone seen any explanation for this or noticed this when compared to previous year?
I am only watching a few sites and we are working every day on those sites. Direct visits are climbing climbing on those sites. If you are continuously adding new content to these sites that engages the visitor your direct visits should be going up.
We are adding new content to these sites every week. And showing that content prominently on the homepage and across the site with server side includes. We also have programs that rotate the content on the homepage so visitors who visit multiple times in a week see different content on each visit. This freshness makes people come back to see what is new and that type of visit is usually a direct visit or a domain query, which I believe are enormously valuable for increasing your rankings.

Queries vs. Organic Keywords in GA
Could someone explain how the following metrics in Google Analytics are being calculated: Search Engine Optimization (Acquisition): clicks on a certain query Campaigns (Acquisition): sessions on a certain keyword GA Help states that both 'queries' and 'organic keywords' refer to the actual string a user enters in Google Search. In that cases it seems that 'clicks' on a SERP result through a given query and 'sessions' through that very same query could not be miles apart. E.g.: Clicks through query X = 170 Sessions through organic keyword X = 8 Thank you for helping me out!

Goals tracking across subdomains
Hi all, I'm having some trouble with regards to setting up goals tracking in Analytics across subdomains and was hoping that someone could help me out. Okay I work for an insurance company and we use a Quote & Buy portal for our insurance policies. Our website - www.example.com sends the traffic to quotes.example.com. Both of these sites have the same Google Analytics tracking ID. The quotes.example.com has no duplicate URLs which appear one our website, therefore I only set up the account to only include the hostname for each. Does this sound correct? The goals issue is if I now set up a goal in the quotes.example.com account, someone comes to www.example.com via Google and then clicks through to our journey and completes, will this count as a referral from www.example.com or as a goal from Organic? I'm totally stuck so any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ben

I have put in a lot of improvements on my site both onsite and offsite, I was just wondering from a critical point of view, what 5 things would you suggest would require an improvement, that will consequently lead to both, a better user experience and better Rankings on Google? Open even to criticism 🙂 Thank You..... Find my site here:http://bit.ly/1vW4GGP

Does anyone know where in Google Analytics I can find the number of clicks/Facebook Shares?
I'm trying to track in Google Analytics how many people are clicking the Facebook "share" button. I'm not sure if I have it properly set up. Here's the link that I followed to set up the tracking in analytics: http://www.simoahava.com/analytics/google-tag-manager-track-social-interactions/

Why would our client's site be receiving significant levels of organic traffic for a keyword they do not rank for?
We have a client that has received 100+ organic visits for the keyword 'airport transfers', yet the site does not rank in the top 100 search results for this keyword. We have checked that it is not untagged PPC traffic. Truly baffling. Can anybody help?

How is it possible that this site has a higher page authority than my site?
Judging by open site explorer, I'm crushing my competitor in every imaginable way. And yet, somehow they have a higher page authority than me and, consequently, are ranking higher than me. How is this possible? My site is on the left: 40atcpP.png

Human Representation on a site
Hello Friends, thank you for helping in advance. My website http://www.FrontlineMobility.com gets a lot of traffic and with our Google Adwords campaigns we have very good click through rates(percentages from 1 percent to 4 percent). So I know that I am getting people to my site, but I can't get them to spend money. It seems like they get there ready to buy, but something turns them away at the last moment. My Partner feels like we should put more pictures of people on the site so that people feel like there is a face to our company. I am also in agreement with this, but I would also like to know if anything else is wrong with our site that perhaps maybe another set of eyes could perceive. Thank you again Moz friends. IP address and GA
Our company is based in Noida, and in GA, i can see few visits from New Delhi. Both these cities are nearby. ( In India ) Our hosting is in US. When a visitor comes to site, does visit is based on IP address of the user's system ? Our company has taken hosting from Noida. Does that means that visits from New Delhi are Genuine and NOT from our company ? My apologies, if i am not clear...
