How should I fix my short meta descriptions?
-
I recently added meta descriptions to several community-supplied pages for our open source website
Google Webmaster Tools is complaining/warning that the meta descriptions are too short. The descriptions are being supplied by our users and they typically do not lend themselves to anything much longer than what is being entered already.
I was thinking of adding some text to the end of the meta description. Something like "This is one of many third party extensions for Spree supplied free of charge by our community" or something else like that.
Is it acceptable practice to reuse a snippet in your meta description like this? Do you suggest other alternatives? Since meta description doesn't affect page rank can I use terms that I'm trying to rank for on my home page without cannibalizing my link juice?
TIA,
Sean

Hey Sean,
We have talked before as we work on one of the spree stores. You need to get content up on all these pages.
For example
http://spreecommerce.com/extensions/267-spree_product_zoom
If it is all user generated content, than you need to make some fields required to help automate this when people add new extensions. Such as title, description.

Hi Sean,
Note that the meta description tags aren't going to be impacting your rankings. Google doesn't use this tag when determining a pages relevance.
What you do want to be considering is the impact it will have on the click through rate of your listings. By having short meta descriptions you are losing out in two areas:
- Less space is taken up on the page by your listing making it less obvious
- Less time to convince users that they should click on your advert.
Perhaps consider adding on a call to action on the meta description tags to counter both of these issues. Something link - "check out our huge range of third party extensions"?
Hope that helps,
Ben

Hey Sean, I had a look at a few and I think you could easily expand these descriptions so enourage your users to work towards a certain number of characters:
Create a multiple slideshow for Spree
becomes
Download page for the spree_multi_slideshow plugin which creates a multiple slideshow for Spree.
That's a bit rubbish but I don't know what Spree is but really, encourage your users to write a more accurate description. Don't use a generic chunk of text, that sucks and does not a strong description of the page make.
To be honest, you may have bigger problems as these pages are all pretty thin on content so getting them to rank at all, let alone display meta descriptions may need a bit of work.
Hope this helps!
Marcus

Moz shows page has no meta description but it does
Hi We recently worked on optimising one of our product pages, we created a new meta description, new unique content and a ensured it was optimised for our keyword. Despite all of this its ranking is still significantly lower than competitors eventhough the page authority is as good as theirs. I have just noticed that Moz crawl diagnostics is showing it up as having no meta description - but it does! when you check the source you see:http-equiv="description" content="Buy the robust and reliable Canon imageRUNNER 2525 from Copyfaxes. Learn more about the Canon 2525 before you buy." /> The page is: http://copyfaxes.com/product/2552/Canon-ImageRunner-2525-Digital-Copier I would appreciate any ideas.

Meta Title for large Metro Area landing page
Hello! I am creating "metro landing pages" for an organization that has a 10-18 locations per metro city. The landing page houses brief information about the organization as a whole and then it has the locations listed with links to their respective pages. My question is how to optimize these titles. My sample city is Atlanta, GA. This metro page includes 18 locations from the Atlanta area. Marietta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, etc... My question is what is the best Meta Title to use for a Metro Page like this? Would it be best to say Day Care in Metro Atlanta | ABC Childcare Company | Child Care Atlanta Area or is their a better way to optimize a large Metro landing page? I really appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!!!

Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?
I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags. This also applies to the author pages (myself ). How do I fix this? Thanks for your help 🙂 Regards Nadia
