I would normally say "Alexa doesn't matter so don't worry about it" but it turns out a lot of advertisers and domain name buyers do consider it when determining the value of a site so there are definitely some benefits to having a decent Alexa ranking.
Anyways, to answer your question, in order to improve your Alexa ranking (without blatantly cheating), you basically need to increase the number of visitors to your website that have the Alexa toolbar installed. Here are some suggestions -
1. Most anti-spyware programs nowadays flag the Alexa toolbar as malware and remove it from the computer, so this means most Alexa toolbar users are not as computer savvy and don't even know how they got the toolbar installed in the first place, let alone how to remove it. Take this into consideration when creating content/targeting keywords specifically for this kind of audience (ie, likely the older generation).
2. Do keyword research to see what kind of searches are being made for "Alexa" related keywords such as "Alexa toolbar uninstall" or "remove Alexa toolbar." This is a dead giveaway that these users have the toolbar installed and are looking to remove it. You can get them to your site by ranking organically for those phrases or if you want these visitors quickly, start up an AdWords campaign and bid on "Alexa toolbar removal" related keywords. Sit back and watch your Alexa ranking take off.
3. My final suggestion is my least favorite since it's essentially peddling spyware to your user base but it's still effective. Offer your users the option to download and install the Alexa toolbar from your website in exchange for some kind of reward. Again, I wouldn't suggest going this route since you risk the chance that your users will abandon your site forever but nonetheless it's still an option.

The alexa rank measures the visits to a website, so to improve it you need more visits. You can do it either doing SEO or different kinds of internet marketing.
Hope that this helps,

Non Moving #1 Website
Hi Guys, Bit of an odd one we have recently undertaken our SEO in house (6-7 Months) and since doing this have had some great results, we have identified our competitors utilising Ahrefs, Moz and other tools that we have selected. However we have come up against something that we really cannot work out. One of our competitors ranks for everything related to there term on their website and industry at position #1 They are not actively doing SEO, Poor backlink structure from the research that we have carried out No fresh content being generate I was wondering if someone would perhaps mind spending 5 mins having a quick look to see what you think as i can't think what we might have missed. Tim.

Ranking in Bing
My frustration with Google currently has led me to try bing out more. I don't rank as good in bing as Google, so I was wondering if anyone had any great tips of what bing looks for to rank website well? So far I can see they seem to favour keyword domains, take 'cheap holidays' for example. Always reading about what Google want but what do bing want? Any advice much appreciated.

I believe is that we had more than 300,000 spammy comments posted on it
(the website is based on wordpress) so Google treated it as

should we do to rank better. Any advice would be very welcome.0 -

Not ranking on Google
Hi all, I am optimising a site which is a hotel directory for a small island in the Mediterranean - Malta. The site is www.maltahotelsonline.com. I did a keyword research and optimised the page. However I am now at link building stage. Since we do not have many links the site is still not ranking very well for the desired keywords (ranking fine on Bing and Yahoo yet not on Google). As a result there isn't much traffic on the site. 1. Is there any particular issue that you can spot on this site that is not allowing it to rank well on Google? 2. Any suggestions on link-building please?

.COM vs .CA rankings - .CA ranks on Google.com
Hi SEOMOZers, We have a fairly large retail client with both .COM and .CA domains. Each of the sites are almost identical in design and, in most cases, content (these would be product pages). The .US site has been live for nearly 2.5 years while the Canadian probably over a year younger or so. Both sites are hosted in the US. What we're starting to see as of the last few months are searches that used to rank .COM product pages now rank the Canadian page above the US page on Google.com. We've checked Webmaster Tools for each site and they target the appropriate country. With nearly all examples we've seen, we haven't noticed any more links pointing to the Canadian page, and where this is becoming a widespread occurence we're not convinced it's a linking issue. My question is why Google might see both versions but rank the Canadian page above the US page on Google.com for a search being performed in the US? Does anyone have any ideas on why this may be happening?
