.me.uk or .com domain with hyphen?
-
Hi Mozzers
Just after some opinions really. Basically a client wants a restaurant website developing and had already chosen a name for it as (example) "englishroserestaurant.co.uk". They wanted to register it themselves but unfortunately before they had time to someone else did.
Now they have come back to me and said about using the name (example) "englishrose.me.uk".
I know these .me.uk names are supposedly for personal websites and not businesses but I assume that, by itself, shouldn't be an issue as there are many commercial sites that do use them.
However as all the combinations have been taken I have suggested that they use a "domain-domain.com as an alternative so just wanted to know which option you guys would go for out of:
Although I avoid hyphens whenever I can in this instance 100% I would go for number 2 as it's only one hyphen and it's a business and looks more professional......having said that I would welcome any comments or opinions.
Thanks in advance.

For me I would use the .com vs .me.uk.
As to the hyphen, if 100 people respond, it will be roughly 50/50. I use both and never have seen a problem. If I were doing a domain like englishroserestaurant, I would use hyphens. Yes, I would. Its just easier to read and remember, IMO.
As to EMD's unless someone is searching for this exact restaurant, its not an EMD (at least one that anyone is looking for).
Best

Honestly I was just surfing through when I saw your question Lucky me though

Hi Donnie
Thanks, I totally agree with your comments on EMD's. In this instance I think the hyphen is perfectly acceptable.
Thanks again.

One hyphen is no biggy. As long as the users like it, it should be fine. However if you are opting for a specific phrase "restaurant in england" I would go for a domain like restaurantinengland.com with no hyphens. Many people have said that exact domain does not matter... I highly disagree, I have seen and still see many exact domain websites ranking for their domain, simply because when linking to your brand name and your anchored terms it looks natural.
Your inbound linking profile will look like and can be built up of: restaurantinengland.com ; resturant in england both of these terms target you key phrase and your brand name.

Hi Billy
You must have been waiting for the next Q & A question......congrats on the extra points and thanks for your thoughts

I have never had any issues with hyphens. Aesthetically I prefer not to use them, but sometimes you just have to. I agree with you.

Anything wrong in linking to homepage from all sub domain pages?
Hi, We have 6 sub domains which are forums, guides, etc. They have their own visitors for the related queries. We are planning to divert some of them to the website to promote our product with latest content. We are planning to add a link from every page of sub domain to our website homepage. This makes additional thousands of internal links flowing to website homepage. Will this kind of internal linking structure hurts? Any risks involved? Thanks

Footer link back to developers domain
I have read a lot about where it is suggested to either not put an attribute link in the footer of a clients site or to no follow it. But I have a little bit different take on the question. How does this work on a large scale? Are these manual penalties, or are they automatic? By large scale, I am talking about big cms programs such as Wordpress, Joomla, and the likes of those. They all have links back to their site in the footer of the default templates. Is this bad? Does it not rally matter on the scale of companies such as this?

Is it possible to redirect the main www. domain - but keep a subdomain active?
Hi Mozzers, Quick question, which I hope one of you can answer... Let's say I have a website (i) www.example.com and on that a subdomain exists, (ii) subdomain.example.com. Let's say I want to change my main domain from www.example.com to www.newwebsite.com. I'd 301 all content, use GWT to notify Google of a change of address etc etc. Having done that, is it still possible to keep the original subdomain active? So, even though www.example.com has been redirected / transferred to www.newwebsite.com, subdomain.example.com would still exist. If that is possible, what is the implication for Domain Authority? On the one hand, I have transferred the main site (so DA from that will transfer to the new site); but part of that root domain is still active. Make sense? Any answers? Thanks everyone...

Whats happening with Google UK?
Within the last week we have had a handful of our rankings drop dramatically down the SERPS. About 15% but this an estimate and has not been fully investigated yet. Whilst looking into possible scenarios that could be causing this i wanted to check what the SERPS looked like for the terms that we are still holding position on. Typing "extending dining tables" into Google UK today i was amazed at what i found... Ranking in position 1 and 2 is a massive UK furniture store.
Web Design | | Silkstream
But isnt that the same landing page being returned for both positions?? It appears to be a navigation problem within the site category tags causing duplicate content. However they have been rewarded with the top two positons subsequently pushing our website onto page two. I find it so frustrating that we listen to Googles best practices when it comes to pagination issues yet this is how our hard work is rewarded! Anyone else have any thoughts about this? SERPS.jpg0 -

Making a third-party hosted blog look like a folder on the main domain
I have a client that has a "completely pristine" Microsoft.net web environment that is unwilling to put a wordpress installation on their server. Their management team wants a wordpress blog for the marketing department. Is there a means where we can host the wordpress blog with a regular hosting company but yet have it appear as part of the main site e.g., mainsite.com/blog vs. having to put it in a subdomain (blog.mainsite.com) and lose all the SEO benefits of the blog content?
