Mobile Sitemap Best Practices w/ Responsive Design
-
I'm looking for insight into mobile sitemap best practices when building sites with responsive design. If a mobile site has the same urls as the desktop site the mobile sitemap would be very similar to the regular sitemap.
Is a mobile sitemap necessary for sites that utilize responsive design?
If so, is there a way to have a mobile sitemap that simply references the regular sitemap or is a new sitemap that has all urls tagged with the "" tag with each url required?
-
Google has a separate mobile crawler. This crawler probably uses guidelines from the mobile sitemap instead of the desktop sitemap.
I think it is worthwhile to make a separate mobile sitemap even with responsive design so Google knows those are the mobile as well as desktop pages.

I'm gonna say no. You don't need to make a separate mobile site map for a mobile design. Unless, you have different url's that are being called up by a mobile screen as apposed to a desktop screen. Depending on the size of the site, I would include those different domains as part of the same sitemap. The only times I would make a separate sitemap for a mobile site on a responsive design would be if I needed to see what pages were being indexed on my intended mobile URL's or if I had a huge amount of URL's and had to divide up the sitemap anyway.

On our website we will have a information section containing various details about a product, this information will be several paragraphs long. we were wanting to show the first paragraph and have a read more button to show the rest of the content that is hidden. Whats googles view on this, is this bad for seo?

How to Have Flat Navigation w/out Diluting Link Juice
I have a client with a very flat navigational structure relying on a menu with CSS hover dropdowns using simple items to get to just about every page on the site through the main navigation on every page. They want this ability to remain. The issue is stat is send link juice all over and does not concentrate into pages that are key search landing pages. I don't want to "no Index" "follow" the less important pages since there are some brand related long tail searches that I would want these pages found. These are useful pages to consumers who are already engaged with the brand, but not ones we would not care to rank for outside of branded search. If there was a way to have some links be non-crawled via javascript (or some other method) and those that are more important use a more standard html type link that would seem ideal. Does anyone have a suggestion for menu tool or technique for exposing to consumers all the links to consumers but restricting google bot's path while being in line with Google Webmaster guideslines? Best Practice for setting up expert author contributing to Multiple Sites?
If a single author contributes to multiple sites, should each site have its own author page (tying to the same single gg+ account)? Ex. One author > one gg+ account > multiple author pages (one per site) Or, should all sites publishing his content link to a single author page/bio on a single, main site? Ex. One author > one gg+ account > a single author page on one site (all other sites link to this author page) In this event, where would the 'contributor to' link point for the additional sites he is contributing to, the homepage? Thanks!

Improve Response Rate
Hi fellow Mozzers, I have recently been trying to earn new links for my company websites by appealing to local public libraries that line up with our geographic footprint. We have store locations in 569 city, state combinations, so I am finding the local library for each city, state and asking them to add us to their website as a community reference for child care. Here is my pitch email that I am sending out.... Hi There, _ I hope this email finds you in good health and good spirits. _ My name is XXXXX and I represent <insert company="" name="">. I am reaching out to local libraries in the cities and counties where our schools are located in an effort to request local support for our schools. Many libraries across the country have reached out to us asking for parent resources and child care options in their local city. I would like to extend the same value to you.</insert> _ I would love to have our school in <insert city="" name="">be considered for placement on your public library site found at <insert target="" website="" url="">. With ample parent resources and child related materials, our school would be a great fit for your local community. We have many great parenting articles, blogs and local child care options in <insert city="" name="">.</insert></insert></insert>_ Our local school website can be found at : Our parent resource section can be found at: Who do you suggest I speak with regarding earning a placement on your site? Any information would be greatly appreciated. So far I have a response rate of about 1% and of those that do respond, none are willing to add a link on their site in any capacity since our company is privately held and not a public school option. Can anyone suggest either a better way to approach link earning on a city by city basis or help me improve my current initial email to get a better response? I really appreciate it! p.s.... some of my other link targets are city run websites, local chamber of commerce chapters (suspect this will be hard since most require a paid membership), local public school sites, and keyword targeted lists such as "child care in phoenix, az" to see what sites come for each term. Advice on these and anything I may be missing would be of great value.

Sitemaps
I am working with a site that has sitemaps broken down very specifically. By page type: article, page etc and also broken down by Category. Unfortunately, this is not done hierarchically. Category and page type are separate maps, they are not nested. My question here is: Is is detrimental to have two separate sitemaps that point to the same pages? Should we eliminate one of these taxonomies, or maybe just try to make them hierarchical? IE item type -> category -> pagetitle Is there an issue with having a sitemap index that points to a nested sitemap index? (I dont think so, but might as well be sure. Thanks Moz Community! Can't delete my question, but turns out that isn't how they are structured. Food for thought anyway I suppose.

Canonical Meta Tag Best Practices
I've noticed that some website owners use canonical tags even when there may be no duplicate issues. For examplewww.examplesite.com has a canonical tag.......rel="canonical" href="http://www.examplesite.com/" />www.examplesite.com/bluewidget has a canonical tag.......rel="canonical" href="http://www.examplesite.com/bluewidget/" />Is this recommended or helpful to do this?

Launching a new site with old, new and updated content: What’s best practice?
Hi all, We are launching a new site soon and I’d like your opinion on best practice related to its content. We will be retaining some pages and content (although the URLs might change a bit as I intend to replace under-scores with hyphens and remove .asp from some extensions in order to standardise a currently uneven URL structuring). I will also be adding a lot of new pages with new content, along with amend some pages and their content (and amend URLs again if need be), and a few pages are going to be done away with all together. Any advice from those who’ve done the same in the past as to how best to proceed? Does the URL rewriting sound OK to do in conjunction with adding and amending content? Cheers, Dave
